Following instructions received Dec. 4 from the navy department, United States cruisers on both sides of the isthmus have started or ure starting on reconnoitering expeditions along the coasts, principally in the direction of Colomhla, for the purpose of ascertaining the condition of the trulls and roads between the Panama and Colombia frontiers, the facilities of the country for sustaining expeditions marching on Panama and generally to determine the best course of action In case of a Colombian invasion of the Isthmus and also to learn the nttitude of the various Indian tribes inhabiting both coasts. Berlin, Deo. 8.—Chancellor von Billow, in view of the alarming reports abroad concerning Emperor William's health and in response to messages of sympathy from American friends of his majesty, desires to express his sinccre thanks for the good wishes for his imperial master. After mass, a great banquet was given 150 guests. The occasion was one of great enthusiasm. Archbishop Seton, formerly pastor of St. Joseph's church, Jersey City, proposed toasts to President Roosevelt, Pope Plus and Monslgnor Kennedy, rector of the college. He declared Kennedy one of the greatest rectors the college ever had. Kennedy, replying, thanked the gathering and said he would devote all his strength to make the college a center of Catholicism, as well as a true American feeling In Rome. Pittsburg, Dec. 8.—Two men giving their names as Abraham Thaler and Morris Opar, both twenty-three years old, of New York have been arrested here. After the prisoners had attempted to bribe the officers they were taken to the central police station and compelled to disgorgev diamonds and other Jewelry valued at $10,000. Besides the Jewelry the men had two revolvers and two pawn tickets from New York brokers. After mass, a great banquet was given 150 guests. The occasion was one of great enthusiasm. Archbishop Seton, formerly pastor of St. Joseph's church, Jersey City, proposed toasts to President Roosevelt, Pope Plus and Monslgnor Kennedy, rector of the college. He declared Kennedy one of the greatest rectors the college ever had. After the prisoners had attempted to bribe the officers they were taken to the central police station and compelled to disgorgev diamonds and other Jewelry valued at $10,000. Besides the Jewelry the men had two revolvers and two pawn tickets from New York brokers.
