New York, Oct. 24. — Guarding his movements with all possible secrecy, John Alexander Dowle, "Elijah the Rostorer," slipped away from New York last night for Boston, carrying all his family and baggage with him In his private car. He absolutely declined to indicate In any way when he will return to this city, and the information obtained last night was that he intends to sail with his family, who are booked for Australia. It is Impossible to ascertain whether any provision has been made for the members of the Zion restoration host now at Madison Square Garden, either for their return to Zion City or for their maintenance while here. Butte, Mont., Oct. 24.—According to •very indication the Amalgamated CoplDer company Is .preparing for a long shutdown, as many of the pumps in the big' mines have suspended operations. The Amalgamated officials are reticent as to the probable length of the suspension, saying it may be of six or eight months' duration and perhaps a greater period. And yet—I think there are quite as many "and yets" In this world as "buts"—and yet, I repeat, speaking solely and most emphatically of bedrooms, the simplest, comforts and necessities of everyday life are In some respects entirely forgotten or overlooked in almost two-thirds of the houses I stay in. Nearly half our life is Baj'nt in our bedrooms, by some principally in peaceful sleep, by others iu weary wakefulness, and very little provision is made for the benefit, relief or comfort or either. . Many a time and oft I have lain awake In most luxurious rooms, hungry both in body and mind. I have longed for even the driest and hardest of biscuits and groaned In spirit, envious at the mere thought of the literature that adorns the walls of our railway waiting rooms. A little time and thought, I will not say trouble, and what a difference would result as regards the comfort and happiness of the tired or wakeful guest. Let there be close by every bed a fair sized table and over it, quite low down, a small combined bookshelf and cupboard, the latter always eirfpty for each guest. Fill the bookshelf with care, and do not consult only your own taste in literuture— and, speaking of bookshelves (I say it with bated breath), a dictionary is sometimes useful to a "phonetic" guest. On the table place a cracker jar, and see that It is filled, a carafe of cold water and a tumbler. Smelling salts need not be forgotten, nor yet a fan in hot weather. Add a new magazine and light booklet,, of which latter there is no lack. Lot 6. Ladies' Melton Walking Skirts, plain or mixed good*; worth 13; special price $1.75 each. Lot 7. Tapestry Table Covers, beautiful stripes and figures, for $125 each. New York, Oct. 24.—Awakened by a violent explosion, the residents of Bay Chester, City Island and intervening settlements in the Pelham Bay district, thought today that an earthquake was shaking their homes about their heads. Dynamite and gunpowder in transit on a freight car on the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroad exploded. The explosion blew four cars off the tracks and set them afire. Window panes were shattered, plaster fell from the walls and frame houses rocked from the terrible impact. People jumped from their beds and ran screaming Into the streets. Everyone In Bay Chester was awakened. Tho glare of the burning freight cars soon told the cause of the explosion and quiet was soon restored. That none of the train crew was Injured was almost miraculous. Fortunately the train carried no caboose and the brakemen at the time were forward. The train consisted of 25 cars. It had passed through Bay Chester station and wag heading for a trestle over Pedham Bay, when the coupling on the fourth car from the rear parted. One brakeman noticed that the train had parted and gave the signal to the engineer. The moment the air brakes were set the cars running free crashed into the forward section. The jar was sufficient to explode the stored dynamite, and with a roar heard fdr miles one of the cars was blown into splinters. The prisoner was placed in a patrol wagon of the East Thirty-fifth street station and driven to the foot of East Twenty-second street. There he and his captors boarded the revenue cutter Chamberlain, which set out to Ellis Island, where Turner was locked up. An effort will be made by the leading citizens of the state to have the supreme court advance the hearing on the appeal from Judge Clancys decision in the case in the hope tlini a reversal of the judgment by the tribunal will induce the Amalgamated Copper company to resume. Indignation among the Amalgamated people is rife, and they are loud- in denouncing the present state of affairs and declare that all business on the part of the company will remain at a standstill until the Boston and Montana receivership matter is finally settled. Immigration Commissioner Williams has had a warrant for Turner's arrest for the last five weeks. The federal officials assert be has been going from city to city preaching anarchy, and though trailed by secret service detectives lie was not before apprehended. Stegmaier Brewing Co Wilkcsbarre, Pa. Accompanied by his wife and their linkissed son, Dowie left the Fifth Avenue hotel" secretly by the Twentyfourth street entrance at 11:30 o'clock, entering his brougham, the curtains of which were carefully pulled down. They were rapidly driven up Fifth avenue to Twenty-ninth street, then east, then back to Madison avenue, then south and generally circulated around the district between the hotel and the Grand Central station, with the evident Intention of throwing off any one who attempted to follow the carriage. Finally the brougham arrived at the station, where some 200 pieces of baggage had preceded them. PEOPLE'S STORE. John Turner is an English labor leader.
