At last, the constable and party cornered him in a "stretch of pine-woods, two or three miles outside of Tunk. Over fences, through stubble fields, dodging stumps and pitfalls, leaping brunt) heaps or getting around them with the amazing celerity of an old fox ; 011, on ho dashed, making twoforty for the innermost recess of the woods, his ''linsey-woolsey" coat tails ilying like sails in the breeze. T,he last fence was gained, over it he he climbed, and the "stretch was before him—but not his escape. His pursuers nearing him, he bethought himself of a sycamore tree in which upon a previous operation he had hid away. But, alas, just as he gained the shadow of the tree, just then, Siah Rogers, foremost in the chase, drew a dead bead on him with a rifle. Siah was a dead shot. Lige turned so suddenly that his foot cauuht in a root, and down he fell, full length, his nasal appendage plowing into the sod and his hands outspread like|a bat's wings.
