On Sept. 20 Tompkins was sentenced to seventeen years' Imprisonment for forgery. The witness said that he personally paid nothing for his share of stock, and he did not know if any one else had paid for it. He understood, however, that the share of stock belonged to him. He Indorsed the sliure of stock In blank and surrendered It to one of the employees of the Corporation Trust company, receiving no payment. He did not know what became of it. Lawrenceville, III., Oct. 10.—A jury trying George ilyrtn, charged with assault to commit murder, falling to reach a verdict after being out thirtysix hours, a juror suggested flipping nickels, heads to convict and tails to acquit. Each juror put a nickel in a hat, gave it a shake and a toss, and the nickels fell on a table, six and six, necessitating another toss. The second trial showed four heads and eight tails, resulting in acquittal. The court accepted the verdict, but did not know how it was reached. Bridgeport, Conn., Oct. 16.—The residence of Goodwin Stoddard, leading counsel for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad company, was entered by burglars during the night, who got away with r vout $1,000 worth of plunder. The principal loser by the operations of the thieves was Mrs. Sanford Stoddard, who is a niece of Mrs. Bradley Martin and a bride of only a few months. Cincinnati, O., Oct. lii.—In the trial of Miller and Johns for alleged conspiracy and bribery under the recent post office indictments the government rested in the afternoon, and the defense introduced evidence for three hours. One of the defendants was still on the stand when court adjourned. After the government rested counsel for both Johns and Miller filed motions for n nonsuit. ' Both motions were promptly overruled by Judge Thompson. "No," answered Mr. Storinlngton Barnes. Lawrenceville, III., Oct. 10.—A jury trying George ilyrtn, charged with assault to commit murder, falling to reach a verdict after being out thirtysix hours, a juror suggested flipping nickels, heads to convict and tails to acquit. The second trial showed four heads and eight tails, resulting in acquittal. The court accepted the verdict, but did not know how it was reached.
