Washington, Pa., Sept. 20.—The most diabolical crime in the history of Washington county was committed when Samuel T. Ferguson of the Ferguson Construction company of Pittsburg was instantly killed and his bookkeeper, Charles L. Martin, thirty-six years old, of Cincinnati, was fatally injured by au explosion of dynamite which had been placed in the road by two men for the purpose of robbery. She reports that she was in wireless touch all the way across the Atlantic. She communicated with the steamers St. Louis, Aurania, Campania, Moltke, Vanderland, Saxonia, Philadelphia, LaBretagne, Auguste Victoria, and La Lorraine. Among the passengers was Lieutenant General Sir Ian Hamilton, quartermaster guard to the British forces. Hamilton took a prominent part in the defence of Ladysmith during the South African war and later was Lord Kitchener's chief of staff. Woonsocket, H. I., Sept. 20.—Because the trained eye of Engineer George W. Boss recognized in the awkward swing of a lantern, the work of a novice, he pulled the throttle wide open und drove his train thundering by a danger signal set dead against him and frustrated what is believed to have been an attempt to hold up—the boat train at Pluniuier's Ledge, a lonely spot a mile north of Whitln's Station, on the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroad.Erwln specifically denied that at any time had he conspired with Machen, Beavers or any one else for the sale of the device. About a quarter of a mile north from West Middletown Is a long hill known us Seminary hill, leading into a miniature valley. Sept. 2(1.—Clifton Branhum paid the penalty of wife murder here. Before going to the gallows he made a speech of some length, claiming that ho was justified in the killing by the circumstances. He appealed to those present for Indorsement of hit deed, and aliout 300 of the crowd. It'is said, agreed with him. Parks will not be permitted to hoDld his advantage without a struggle Buchanan says he will rule the conven tion again, even if he is to be set upor by Parks and all his followers. Kansas City, Sept. 26.—At a caucus of adherents of President Buchanan, of the Iron workers, held early this morning, following a midnight conference, a declaration lor their International president and against Parks' control was made by the delegates from Buffalo, Milwaukee, Toledo, Salt Lake City, Pittsburg, St. Louis, Wheeling, Pueblo, Washington, Philadelphia, Scranton and Kansas City. Glidden and his wife of Lowell, Mass., linve returned to London after completing an automobile tour of 0,670 miles. Mr Glidden and his wife arrived here from Boston in June. Immediately on reaching Providence he reported the matter to Superintendent Whaley, who took the affair very seriously, at once starting an investigation of all the circumstances and later gave Deputy Sheriff Bacon charge of the case. Above his left eye was cut one deep, long gush, the only wound on his body, showing that his dentil must have been caused by this wound. A little to his right lay Martin, still conscious and moaning piteously, horribly lacerated from head to foot. The force of the explosion was terrltte. Both horses were thrown a distance of sixty feet, and both were blown to fragments. One horse had its hind quarters blown off. and its entrails were thrown into a Hold nearly a hundred yards away. The other horse had Its head almost torn off. while the buggy was torn to pieces. The work of the men was evidently well planned and carried out with a nicety that would do credit to an expert electrician. Washington, Sept. 26.—The first torpedo boat flotilla, comprising the Decatur, Barry, Bainbrldge, Chauncey and Dale, has been detached from the North Atlantic squadron and ordered to prepare to proceed to the Asiatic station by way of the Suez canal. The boat train is followed some minutes later by an express and mail train, and it is thought that the attempt was perhaps directed at the latter train, which was confused with the boat train. Main St. London, Sept. 26.—Some alarm was caused today when it became known that Dr. Sir Frederick Treves, the famous expert in diseases of the appendix, had been called to Balmoral. It was learned later lhat there was no reason for alarm. Treves had informed his friends that he was going to Balmoral 36 hours before he left. He said the visit would be merely a formal one. He believed, however, that the Kins wished to have a medical consultation with him. The wreckage Is thought to be from the fishing steamer Beatrice, which was caught in the recent hurricane when south of the Delaware breakwater Wednesday. Sept. 10. Buffalo, Sept. 26.—At 8 o'clock this morning the condition of Mrs. Jefferson Davis was unchanged. The doctors stated that although she is no worn:, she is not out of danger. A score of sticks of the deadly dynamite must have boen imbedded beneath the culvert, for the hole opened in the road would almost bury a house. Leading from the dynamite directly in the center of the highway was perhaps sixty feet of fine copper wire carefully Insulated. This wire connected with a battery located in the trees beside which the robbers had taken their position. A button was attached to tlie battery, and at an Instant's notice the dynamite could be exploded. The Pittsburg Steamboat company receded from its position relative to Captain Frank fine of the steamer Clemson and ills mates, who are not members of the association. The sheriff summoned assistance, but he and his aids were overpowered, the jail entpred and the much wanted negro, Allen Small, shot to death in the corridor. Among the passengers was Lieutenant General Sir Ian Hamilton, quartermaster guard to the British forces. I., Sept. 20.—Because the trained eye of Engineer George W. Boss recognized in the awkward swing of a lantern, the work of a novice, he pulled the throttle wide open und drove his train thundering by a danger signal set dead against him and frustrated what is believed to have been an attempt to hold up—the boat train at Pluniuier's Ledge, a lonely spot a mile north of Whitln's Station, on the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroad.Erwln specifically denied that at any time had he conspired with Machen, Beavers or any one else for the sale of the device. Sept. 2(1.—Clifton Branhum paid the penalty of wife murder here. Before going to the gallows he made a speech of some length, claiming that ho was justified in the killing by the circumstances. Glidden and his wife of Lowell, Mass., linve returned to London after completing an automobile tour of 0,670 miles. Mr Glidden and his wife arrived here from Boston in June. Immediately on reaching Providence he reported the matter to Superintendent Whaley, who took the affair very seriously, at once starting an investigation of all the circumstances and later gave Deputy Sheriff Bacon charge of the case. Above his left eye was cut one deep, long gush, the only wound on his body, showing that his dentil must have been caused by this wound. A little to his right lay Martin, still conscious and moaning piteously, horribly lacerated from head to foot. The force of the explosion was terrltte. Both horses were thrown a distance of sixty feet, and both were blown to fragments. One horse had its hind quarters blown off. and its entrails were thrown into a Hold nearly a hundred yards away. The other horse had Its head almost torn off. while the buggy was torn to pieces. The work of the men was evidently well planned and carried out with a nicety that would do credit to an expert electrician. The sheriff summoned assistance, but he and his aids were overpowered, the jail entpred and the much wanted negro, Allen Small, shot to death in the corridor.
