Mocha and Java Very meagre reports reached the Gazette today in a roundabout way concerning a disastrous storm that swept the Atlantic coast, principally in New Jersey, at in early hour this morning. The Publishers' Press, upon which the Gazette relies for its telegraphic service, failed to get a story of the disaster to this section of the State, on account of the destruction of the telegraph lines between here and the coast. About 12.30 o'clock, while the operator at the Western Vnion station was taking press dispatches, the service was suddenly cut off, and since that time all efforts to establish communication by wire with New York or Philadelphia have utterly failed. Not only press dispatches, but private messages of every description were held up, and no news had passed over the wires to the metropolis up to 4 o'clock this afternoon. Scranton and Wilkesbarre were almost as badly off as this city. Efforts were being made to send messages over one wire between Scranton and Philadelphia, but this was working so badly and there was so much business crowded upon It that it was very difficult to secure any storm information Lieutenant Murtaugh a Prisoner. Telephone advices from Philadelphia are to the effect that this morning the entire New Jersey coast was swept by a terrific storm that reached the proportions and character of a hurricane. Next to Eagle Hotel Speaking of the location of tlie line along the const from the head of Portland channel as fixed by the treaty, the speaker pointed out how the report of the United Stntcs const survey In 1S93 showed that the Washington government had adopted the view that the line should follow the "general trend of the const," thus supporting the Canadian contention. Senator Turner interrupted the speaker to say that the re'1 port referred to the "trend of the general coast," hut In reply Mr. Flnlay remarked that this was n "subtle distinction," and Chief Justice Alverstone ended the discussion by saying tlmt It made little difference, as it was "merely the direction of the surveyors." ' All of the telegraph and telephone wires between Philadelphia and Atlantic City are out of service, and the only infermation thafhas been received in Philadelphia from the stricken territory has come by way of railway trains. The railway cervice is demoralized, however, and there is no dependence on trains getting across the meadows on account of the floods. Smoke and Chew It seems certain that Atlantic City received the brunt of the storm. All of the ocean piers at that place have been seriously damaged, and one report says that the damage throughout the city will foot up not short of a million dollars. The debris of the piers ard ocean wreckage are piled up along the boardwalk and the hotels fronting on the beach. . he greatest amount of damage was wrought in the neighborhood of the Inlet, at the northern end of the city. It is reported that no fewer than 50 hotels and other buildings in Atlantic City were unroofed by the gale. McClay's fine apartment house, at the corner of Pacific and Soiijh Carolina avenues, was among the buildings Unroofed. The temperature during the storm rose to 74 and the heat was oppressive. The superintendent of the Delaware and Atlantic Telephone Co. reported that 800 telephones in Atlantic City were thrown out of service by the storm. Outside the city the water caused as much damage and annoyance as the gale. The lowlands between Atlantic City and Camden were so badly flooded that it was impossible for passenger trains to make their way through the water. EVANS BROS 44 and 46 S.
