In an Interview Bishop Scaniiel said: London, Sept. 11.—A terrific gale swept over England last night and did great damage throughout the country. The lifeboats along the coast were kept busy throughout the niglit. Many sailors and passengers aboard coast vessels were narrowly saved from death. An excursion boat, laden with holiday excursionists, bound from Folkestone for Hastings, was unablo to make any port and was finally compelled to anchor at sea. The wind was so terrific, however, that two anchors and 28 fathoms of chain were lost. The passengers finally landed at Dover this morning In a _porry plight. No deaths are reported, but several boats are overdue. There appears to be no let-up in the gale, fthich this morning was blowing 70 miles an hour at Plymouth. The dispatch says that eight were killed, one of whom was a soldier. The remaining seven were civilians. Fifty were injured. New Jersey won the first stage of the Dryden trophy match, scoring 350. The District of Columbia was second, 349; Massachusetts third, 344; infantry team of the army, fourth, 341. There were 12 contestants. In an Interview Bishop Scaniiel said: London, Sept. 11.—A terrific gale swept over England last night and did great damage throughout the country. The lifeboats along the coast were kept busy throughout the niglit. Many sailors and passengers aboard coast vessels were narrowly saved from death. An excursion boat, laden with holiday excursionists, bound from Folkestone for Hastings, was unablo to make any port and was finally compelled to anchor at sea. The wind was so terrific, however, that two anchors and 28 fathoms of chain were lost. The passengers finally landed at Dover this morning In a _porry plight. No deaths are reported, but several boats are overdue. There appears to be no let-up in the gale, fthich this morning was blowing 70 miles an hour at Plymouth.
