XXIV—NO. 38 DEVOTED TO THE COAL INTERESTS, POLITICS, NEWS, LITERATURE, AGRICULTURE, AND GENERAL INTELLIGENCE, What to do for the Poor The direct cause of most of the suffering this Reason is the suspension of work in many of our manufactories of all kinds. The best thing that can possibly be done for the poor this winter is to furnish them with employment at such prices as will enable tlieui to keep the wolf from the door. It would be a deed of real generosity on the part of employers and corporations to keep as many meu employed through the winter as possible, liut private enterprise is not enough at a time like this when capitalists are crippled and mechanics and manufacturers are suspeudingoperations for want of means to carry on business with. The Government ought to come to the front to furnish immediate relief to our unemployed workingmen by furnishing them work in its shops and yards. It is very easy for the Tribune to ridicule this idea by asking if the Government is to turn mason because bricklayers are out of employment, and deal out the usual platitudes about the American idea that the best Government Is that which governs least. This is mere stuff and nonsense. It is a poor travesty of our meaning and the demands of the workingmen. We do not ask the Government to turn brickmaker or shoemaker or ironmonger simply to give work and bread to hungry idlers. What we do ask Is that, In this season of financial depression and suffering on the part of laborers thrown out of employment lor no fault of their own, tiie Government sliull open its navyvards and arsenals and public works of all sorts, and give employment to as mauy hands as it can possibly use in repairing and building ships, in making arms, in completing the enterprises it has begun, and iu carrying out new designs of real value and uses year ago, for weeks before the Presidential election, tiie Government works of all kinds swarmed with meu under work and pay. Can the Government give two months' work and pay for a ballot, but notning whatever lor bread ? Because our Government is not paternal in the European sense, must it mock the people's hunger witli astone, and when they ask even a ti*h give tiieni a serpent? The sooner we have a par- ntal goverumeu the better. We maintain, iu oppobitioii U) the Tribune anil Post and some other jounals still immersed in what they are pleased to call "American ideas," that it is a part of a wis*, sound government policy to take advantage of a crisis like this to tiuish the work it ha* on hand and carry out new plans of public utility, for Uie •loubie reason that the work can be done ii ore cheaply tlian at other times and in this way it indenlities itself with tiie interest and welfare of the people. Toe Government can thrust lis Hand into Wali street lo relieve brokers and save bankers from failure. Let it show the same interest in the workingmen it has shown ih merchants and stock-jobbers and millionaires. And the same principle applies witli added force to our City Government. Ar. Y. Graphic. The wit who gave our stage its best comedy— the orator who extorted the highest compliment ever paid to a speaker's eloquence by an opponent, was, as his creditor's knew but too well, a consummate master of the art of making excuses. Waller, too, was no incapable man, although he could turn An excuse us cleverly as he could turn a verse; witness his answer when Charles II complained that the loyal strains with which he welcomed the Restoration were very inferior to those in which he had glorified the Procterate. " I own it, your Majesty," said about her place so often, that if they did not go lo church folks would be sure to talk. ATTORNEY AT LAW, Jan 1 . .73 PITTSTON. PA. lEnsra-iR^viEiiD PRO- Palmer, the actor, would not have come under the ban as a man good at excuse making. One day, while busy iu his garden at Kentishtown, he was stung iu the eye by a wasp with such effect that he was obliged to send word to the theatre that it wouid be impossible for him to appear on the stage that evening. The customary apology on account of sudden indisposition was made by the manager. A pittite, however, was incredulous, and rising in his place, loudly gave his disbelief expression, until the audience, convinced that they were being deceived, became uproarious, and insisted upon seeing the actor himself; so the manager was obliged to fetch him. When Palmer walked on the stage, the people saw no sign of any ailment, and hissed him unmercifully. As soon as quiet could be restored, Palmer, advancing to the footlights, addressed the house briefly, and, as he thought, to the purpose with : "Ladies and gentlemen, I am aware of the odd effect my apuearance here may produce after the apology which has been made for my illness, which I thought it hardly possible to describe by communication to the theatre.'' Here he was interrupted by shouts of, "No wonder!" "Shame!" "What's the matter?" "The fact is, ladies and gentlemen, my illness was all In my eye I" Of course, the impatient people interpreted the dubious expression their own way, and a scene of confusion resulted easier to be imagined than described. For once, at least, Palmer achieved tlio height of an actor's ambition, and brought down the house. What, again, could he happier in its way than Talleyt and's excuse for having uassed a lady in the street without Having looked at her : "if I had looked, I could not have passed you !" It must be owned, however, these examples might be cited as illustrations of Pope's definition of an excuse—something worse than a lie, being built upon some probability, and using a degree of truth to falsify with —in short a lie guarded. Flattery, coming easily enough to a poet or di| lomatir-t, was not the forte of the American lawyer, who, called to account for displaying his contempt of the court, replied that if he had beHi so unfortunaie, it was from inadvertence, as he studiously eudeavored to conceal his feelings. Tills learned gentlemen would have sympathised with his "brother-in-law threatened by an Irate Judge, with committal, for declaring his belie! that the court could be bought witli a peck of beano; whereupon the delinquent owned lie had spoken too hastily, and begged to withdraw the obnoxious o - servatiolt, with the reservation, that if lie had put It at half a bushel, no power upou earth should have made him recall his words. A neater impertinence w as perpetrated by Lord Kldon in the days of his barristerhood. A young counsel, lacking in self-control, upon hearingjiidgemeiit given against his client exclaimed that he was astonished at such a decision, and was ordered by the judges to attend at the bar next morning to answer for the irregularity. Mr. iScotl undertook to see liis friend through in is little di culty, and when his name was called, rose ami said . " My lords, I am very sorry ll:y young friend has so far forgotten himslf as to treat your honorable bench with disrespect; lie is extremely penitent, and you will kindly ascribe iiis unintentional insult to his ignorance. You must see at once it originated in that. He said he was surprised at the decisien of your lordships. Now, if he had not being very ignorant of what takes place in this court every day—had he but known you half as long as I have done—he would not have been astonished at anything." A French republican, condemned to death for murdering his wife and child without extenuating circumstances, demurred to the sentence, because capital punishment. had been abolished in France for political offenses, and he had killed his wife and child for no other reason but because they were Legitimists.
