The Turks here, however, take an optimistic view, asserting that there Is no danger of a war, aa Turkey does not desire one and Prince Ferdinand and the present Bulgarian government are not In a position to force hostilities.Supreme Court Justices VanSykle and Dixon sat on the bench with Chief Justice Gummere, as they did yesterday. The defendants listened throughout the testimony with close attention. Most of them sat back in their chairs and looked uncomfortable. When the cross-examination of Charles Kay had been finished, Christopher Condron, #gate tender at the Clifton avenue crossing, was called. The witness estimated that he raised and lowered tho gates about 200 times in 12 hours. Trolley cars crossed frequently, sometimes on a five-minute headway, sometimes on 15 minutes. Condron's attention was drawn to snow on the tracks at the time of the accident. "Several cars had been over them when I first noticed them," he said. " I saw the cars slipping as they came down, and called one conductor's attention to it. That was pbout six minutes to eight. Tho snow seemed about an inch deep all over the street. Va., Sept. 1.—The discovery of a 500-barrel oil well in this county has attracted oil men in all parts of this State and Pennsylvania to the scene. The hotels cannot begin to accommodate visitors. Sunday night, 20 or more oil men from tho north end or the State slept in a livery stable, while on Monday night the number exceeded 50. Every train brings a nevi delegation and leases aro being taken at fabulous prices. The Bulgarian agent at Uskub reports that the detachments of Turkish troops sent to garrison Hie small towns In that vilayet have spread destruction along their route; that villagers have been robbed and beaten, while the local authorities appear to be helpless. At the village of Drachevo, six miles from Uskub, the soldiers attacked all the peasants without the gendarmes interfering in behalf of the latter. The Bulgarian agent specifies similar excesses lu many other villages. Double Tragedy In Richmond. Richmond, Va., Sept. 1.—Herbert B. Bates, son of Assistant City Engineer Frank T. Bates, shot and killed Miss Rena Gentry at her home here and then killed himself. The shooting took place in the front parlor of Miss Gentry's home, no one being in the room save the two young people. Mr. Bates and Miss Gentry had been keeping company since they were small children, and the young man was madly infatuated with the young lady. It is believed that she did not return his love. Whatever the intent or purpose of the Colombia senate in disapproving the text of the treaty submitted to that body, it is recognized by this government that the effect is equivalent to rejection. The treaty was ratified by the United States sennte only after a very protracted debate nnd after thorough consideration of the nmount of money to be paid and the extent and character of the jurisdiction to be exercised by the United States over the territory to be traversed by the canal. New York, Sept. 1.—The certificate of reasonable doubt granted by Jus-' tice Sewell, in the case of Samuel J Parks, the walking delegate, was filed this morning with the clerk of the court of general sessions. Parks will be brought from Sing Sing prison to New York and released on bail this afternoon.The prefect on Aug. 21, It is declared, summoned the Bulgarian notables of Malkotirnovo and endeavored to force them to sign a statement that the insurgents were the aggressors. The notables refused to do so, and the first man who refused was hanged the following day. The disapproval of the treuty by the Colombia senate was mainly on the ground that its requirements in the matter of transfer of territorial jurisdiction or sovereignty cannot be legally granted, and the negative action of the senate was coupled with a measure providing for a Joint committee to give further consideration to tills question in the expectation that a solution might be reached and the alleged constitutional barrier removed. Soper, special consulting expert of the state health department In connection with the Ithaca typhoid epidemic, has resigned that position. Dr. Soper says that typhoid would be stamped out at Ithaca If the local authorities would follow his instructions, but they have not even appointed a health" board to succeed those who recently resigned. The Macedonian leaders here assert that an aggregate of 2,000 Bulgarians had crossed the frontier in small parties and Joined the insurgents during the last ten days. General Zontcheff, the president of the Macedonian committee, and Colonel Jankoff, one of the revolutionary leaders, who are now In Macedonia, sent word that the insurgent forces total 12,000 to 15,000 men. Moreover, the existing feeling In the states of Panama and Cauca, which is one of general discontent bordering on revolution over the rejection of the trteaty, tends to discourage further efforts to induce Colombia to grant the required concessions. Witli a revolution in Panama having for its object a separation from Colombia and the estrtblishment of an independent republic, this government could not enter upon the work of building a canal, at least until there should be a permanent settlement of the strife and the country restored to order. The Turks here, however, take an optimistic view, asserting that there Is no danger of a war, aa Turkey does not desire one and Prince Ferdinand and the present Bulgarian government are not In a position to force hostilities.Supreme Court Justices VanSykle and Dixon sat on the bench with Chief Justice Gummere, as they did yesterday. The defendants listened throughout the testimony with close attention. Most of them sat back in their chairs and looked uncomfortable. When the cross-examination of Charles Kay had been finished, Christopher Condron, #gate tender at the Clifton avenue crossing, was called. The witness estimated that he raised and lowered tho gates about 200 times in 12 hours. Trolley cars crossed frequently, sometimes on a five-minute headway, sometimes on 15 minutes. Condron's attention was drawn to snow on the tracks at the time of the accident. "Several cars had been over them when I first noticed them," he said. " I saw the cars slipping as they came down, and called one conductor's attention to it. That was pbout six minutes to eight. Tho snow seemed about an inch deep all over the street. At the village of Drachevo, six miles from Uskub, the soldiers attacked all the peasants without the gendarmes interfering in behalf of the latter. The Bulgarian agent specifies similar excesses lu many other villages. Double Tragedy In Richmond. Richmond, Va., Sept. 1.—Herbert B. Bates, son of Assistant City Engineer Frank T. Bates, shot and killed Miss Rena Gentry at her home here and then killed himself. The shooting took place in the front parlor of Miss Gentry's home, no one being in the room save the two young people. Mr. Bates and Miss Gentry had been keeping company since they were small children, and the young man was madly infatuated with the young lady. It is believed that she did not return his love. Whatever the intent or purpose of the Colombia senate in disapproving the text of the treaty submitted to that body, it is recognized by this government that the effect is equivalent to rejection. The treaty was ratified by the United States sennte only after a very protracted debate nnd after thorough consideration of the nmount of money to be paid and the extent and character of the jurisdiction to be exercised by the United States over the territory to be traversed by the canal. New York, Sept. 1.—The certificate of reasonable doubt granted by Jus-' tice Sewell, in the case of Samuel J Parks, the walking delegate, was filed this morning with the clerk of the court of general sessions. Parks will be brought from Sing Sing prison to New York and released on bail this afternoon.The prefect on Aug. 21, It is declared, summoned the Bulgarian notables of Malkotirnovo and endeavored to force them to sign a statement that the insurgents were the aggressors. The notables refused to do so, and the first man who refused was hanged the following day. The disapproval of the treuty by the Colombia senate was mainly on the ground that its requirements in the matter of transfer of territorial jurisdiction or sovereignty cannot be legally granted, and the negative action of the senate was coupled with a measure providing for a Joint committee to give further consideration to tills question in the expectation that a solution might be reached and the alleged constitutional barrier removed. The Macedonian leaders here assert that an aggregate of 2,000 Bulgarians had crossed the frontier in small parties and Joined the insurgents during the last ten days. General Zontcheff, the president of the Macedonian committee, and Colonel Jankoff, one of the revolutionary leaders, who are now In Macedonia, sent word that the insurgent forces total 12,000 to 15,000 men. Moreover, the existing feeling In the states of Panama and Cauca, which is one of general discontent bordering on revolution over the rejection of the trteaty, tends to discourage further efforts to induce Colombia to grant the required concessions. Witli a revolution in Panama having for its object a separation from Colombia and the estrtblishment of an independent republic, this government could not enter upon the work of building a canal, at least until there should be a permanent settlement of the strife and the country restored to order.
