It will not be until then. It Is unpleasant to be compelled to admit it, but the brains in boat building are on this side of the water. Herreshoff Is a wizard. PEOPLE'S STORE Russia and Japan Cannot Agree. The State of Kentucky neyer presented a more dramatic spectacle than that of Powers, who was formerly Secretary of State for the Commonwealth, pleading for his own life before a jury. Once a Republican State leader and the friend and adviser of Governor Taylor, himself now a fugitive in Indiana, Powers stood in court for hours and protested his Innocence of thi charge of conspiring to kill Goebel. He declared that he would never follow the course of Youtsey, by feigning a fit in the court room to avoid the Just punishment fixed by the law, but would fight In the courts to the last to prove his innocence. The closing hour of Powers' argument In his own behalf was devoted to an explanation of the pardon of Governor Taylor to him and to his having gathered together and taken the mountain army on Jan. 25, 1900, to Frankfort. He declared that it was a peaceful body, and went there only on a peaceful mission. If the scornful attitude of the Russians in the far east toward Japanese pretensions reflects the opinion of the authorities at 8t. Petersburg there can be little reason to expect an amicable settlement of the proposals for the modus vivendl presented by the Japanese minister at St. Petersburg Aug. 12. These proposals embodied a reciprocal recognition of the respective rights of the two powers in Manchuria and Korea. 15 South Main St., Pittston. • ALWAYS THE CHEAPEST.
