Tacoma, Wash., Auk. 10.—J. E. Brown, a real estate broker at Colfax, yesterday shot and fatally wounded Thomas Tunbow, a real estate agent •of Garfield. A mob is forming at Garfield, and If Turnbow dies, as expected. Brown will be lynched. The shooting was cold blooded and occurred on the street in Colfax in front of a hotel. Permit me to thank you as nn American citizen for the admirable way in which you have vindicated the majesty of the law by your recent action in reference to lynching. I feel, my dear sir. that you have made all men your debtors who believe, as all farseeing men must, that the well being. Indeed the very existence of the republic, depends upon that spirit of orderly liberty under the law which is as incompatible with mob violence as with any form of despo.tism. Of course mob violence is siiftply one form of anarchy. The correspondent says that the stat utes of the revolutionary coinniitte* forbid insurgents to touch peaceful Mo hauimeduns of either sex and thai therefore the report emanating froir the Turkish government that thej killed Mohammedan womeu and children in live Turkish villages in the Kastoi ia district is untrue. The settlement la looked upon as a decisive victory for tlio Connecticut Railway and Lighting company. The strike lasted seven months. The cabinet has also ordered the various heads of departments to facilitate the work of advancing Spain's Interests at the exposition. All thoughtful men must feel the gravest alarm over the growth of lynching in this country and especially over the peculiarly hideous forms so often taken by mol» violence when colorenl men are the victims—on which occasions the mob Beema to lay most weight not on the crime, but on the color of the criminal. PEOPLE'S STORE The coronation of the pope yesterday at St. Peter's was an event of the greatest importance. Since 1840 no pope had been crowned in the vastest temple of Olutfstianlty, and no pope had celebrated mass there since 1870. The devotion or curiosity of the people was raised, therefore, to the highest point, and the denuind for tickets was almost incredible. STEGMAIER BREWING COMPANY, WIIKESBARRE, PA, 15 South Main St., Pittston. ALWAYS THE CHEAPEST. The Constantinople correspondent ol the Times says Bulgarian bauds havt devastated five Mussulman villages Ir the Ivastoria district, killing the inliab ltants indiscriminately, and destroying all property and crops. Crowds were on the streets until late at night jeering and hooting the strike breakers. Some sympathizers were so Incensed at the defeat of .the strikers that thoy got on the cars and spat In the faces of the strike breakers. In such cases, moreover, it Is well to remember that the criminal not merely Bins against humanity in inexplicable and unpardonable fashion, but sins particularly against his own race and does them a wrong far greater than any white mnn can possibly do them. Therefore in such cases the colored people throughout the land should In every pbssiblc way show their belief that they, more than all others in the community, are horrified at the commission of such a crime and are peculiarly concerned in taking every possi- to prevent its recurrence and to bring the criminal to immediate justice.FOUR BOYS DBOWNED. Tills caused serious fatigue and naturally contributed to diminish the solemnity and pious character of the ceremony. The people, suffering from tlie heat and want of air, became Impatient, and the greatest excitement was aroused when the pope entered the church after 9 o'clock in the sedla gestatorla, which was borne by twelve scarlet clad bearers. Bostowski, the Russian consul at Monastir, on Saturday last. Moreover, every effort should be made under the law to expedite the proceedings of justice In the case of such an awful crime. But it cannot be necessary in order to accomplish this to deprive any citizen of those fundamental rights to be heard in his own defense which are so dear to us all and which lie at the root of our liberty. Hut even where the real criminal is reached the wrong done by the mob to the community itself is well nigh as great. Especially is this true where the lynching is accompanied with torture. There are certain hideous sights which when once seen can never he wholly erased from the mental retina. The mere fact of having seen them Implies degradation.
