Jan I '7'• Insurance placed in companies that liave not complied with the laws of the State where the property insured is situated (either by the company direct, or through agents or brokers), cannot in case of Ions, be sued for and recovered, in any of the United States or State Courts, and the assured is left entirely at the mercy of such companies, and without legal remedy. The statute of all the States imposes certain conditions upon all Insurance Companies (chartered by other States), to enable them to obtain authority to transact business and make binding contracts within the State, and without having first complied with such laws, and obtained the legal authority to do business, all insurance written by them is illegal and void. The following is an abstract from a recent opinion of the Atiorney-General of the State of Indiana upon the subject: " Au the statute prohibits any foreign insurance company, directly or indirectly, to take risks, or transact any business of insurance in the State, without first procuring legal authority, this includes a prohibition upon any person or corporation (not duly authorized) from acting in any capacity as insurance agents, either by soliciting application or collecting money upon premiums. A policy issued by ah agent in violation of a Ia.v declaring his act to be criminal, has been decided by the Supreme Court to be void, after a destruction by lire of the property insured (20th Indiana, p. 250), and in a recent case riot yet reported in Indiana, (Hoffman vs. Ranks) the general doctrine is con-; firmed." When Topsy, in "Uncle Tom's Cabin," throws her lapful of flowers, in a passion of grief and despair, 011 Eva lying dead on the couch, we all recognize the fitness of the act. Its tenderness and grace are perfect, and the tribute from the rude and half-barbarous nature to the one that lias wakened it to the consciousness of a heart is Very beautiful. .So when a little darling that has seemed our very own is lifted out of our arms into heaven, or a fair young girl in her innocence shuts h r eyes in the last long sleep, there is an appropriateness that the dullest heart can see in strewing flowers above such rest. Love takes a mournful pleasure in making its wreaths and garlands, and the whitest of roses and lilies seem in their place as they bloom above the beautiful remains from which "life and thought have gone _ Among the Reminole Indians there is a singular tradition regarding the white man's origin and superiority. They say that when the Great Spirit made the earth he also made three men. All of the men bad fair complexions ; and that, after making them he led them to tbe margin of a small lake, and bade them leap in and wash. One obeyed, and came out purer and fairer than before: the second hesitated a moment, during which the water agitated by the first had become muddled, and when he bathed he came out copper colored ; the third did not b'ap till the water was black with mud anil he came out black with its own color. Tne great spirit laid before tMerii three packages, and out of pity for bis misfortune in color be gave the black man the first choice, lie took hold of fcich package, and felt the weight, chose the heaviest. The copper-colored man chose the next heaviest, leaving the white man tile lightest. When the packages were opened, the first was found to contain.spades, hoes and implements of labor ; the second enwrapped hunting, fishing an warlike apparatuses, the third gave the white man pens ink, and paper, the engin s of the the mind — the means of mutual improvement, tbe social link of humanity, the foundation of the white man's superiority. The moment they become conventional, and are bought :it the florists, chaffered over, and measured off, so many rosebuds to so many dollars, th'ey are shorn of their grace. IT it has ever fallen to tne reader's lot to go to the florists on such an errand us the selection of a garland for some dear dead friend, one can hardly fail to have had his sensibilities allocked. Those lovely anchors and criscents anil crosses that are piled up in their white purity are made over wire frames, and the man whose business it is to make them having, of course, no shred of sentiment about it, picks up the different sizes and prices precisely as if he were selling you apples or potatoes, which is all right so far as he is concerned. There is no earthly reason why the cultivator of tuberoses should be more poetically inclined than the cultivator of cabbages, though tuberoses are poetical and cabbages are not. Any one may buy flowers in their beauty from a florist and send I hem in loving memory to a friend's burial with as much truth and tenderness as it he hud himself sown then seed and watched the developmeu1 of every leaf and bud. The trouble is that since it has become the fashion to have Mowers at funerals. many people send them mer ly because they think they might to. Now things of this kind, that are done for the reason that people think it will be expeeted of them, have lost the very lirstessenti-,. of beauty. M A XVFA CTVREIM If on any occasion, a guest left the room, bits of paper were dropped into his glass, intimating the number of rounds the bottles had gone; and on his return he was obliged to swallow a glass for each, under the penalty of so many glasses of salt and water. It was the practice of some to have decanters with round bottoms, like a modern -soda-water bottle, the only coutrivince in which they could stand being at the head of the table, before the host. Stopping the bottle was thus rendered impossible, and every one was obliged to till the glass at once, and pass the bottle to his neighbor, on tlie peril of upsetting the contents on the table. A still more common practice was to knock the stems off the glasses with a* knife, so that th'ey must be emptied as they w re filled, as they ould not stand. Sometimes the guests, as they s-at down, put off their shoes, which we e taken out of the room; and the empty bottles were broken outside of the 'door, so that i o one could pass out till the carousal was over. And yet this is hardly fair because even the most g irgeous and | magnificent of human beings have to bother themselves with the little things of life, which engage the attention of us smaller people. No doubt that Moses smithed and got angry when he had n severe cold in his head ; ;ind if a fly bit his leg while he was sitting in the desert, why should we suppose he did not jump am1 use violent languaire and rub the sore place? And Cesar, isn't it tolerably certain that he used to become furious when he went up stairs to get his slippers in the dark, and found that Calphurtiia had shoved them back under the bed so that fie had to sweep around lively for them with the poker? And' when Soli mon cracked his crazy bone is it unreasonable to suppose that he hopped around the room and (looked mad and felt as if lie wanted to cry ? Says a correspondent, I answer, yes, an 1 without any great 3Xtra expense. To prove this, 1 have only to say that, although there have1 bA'ii frequent fires in the city of Florence during the thirty-four years of my residence in it, not one house has been consumed, except a theatre, and that was not entirely destroyed. IlPoms full of goods, have been healed like ovens by ignited calicoes. straw hats, etc., but as thefloors above and below were all covered by tliin brick files, the goods burned without ventilation. And as there was 110 flame, - a smell like that of a coal pit soon gave the alarm, and the fire was soon uxtiiigulshed by 110 other engine than a squirt holding about a gallon, whichdischargeda welldirected stream through some aperture. I once beheld some fifteen fireman marching ton lire in Florence. Foremost were three men with picks, next four men with buckets then three men with highly polished brass squirts on their shoulders; all marching with an air of pomp anil importance. The fire was at the residence of Mr. Clevenger, the American sculptor, and had been burning twenty-four hours 011 the end of a joist under his fire place. He had smelt something like li coal pit for some tirn?, and at. length perceived smoke rising from the brick floor. On going below he found the room full of smoke, ami a rush bottomed chair just under the joist was partially consumed . Hut the joist was not yet burned off, and why ? Because the lire was bricked down. It could not rise and burst In- THE MOTT STEAM M1EL, 1. When we add to their unmeayingness, as in these instances, the element of profit apd loss that has been considered, the whole tiling becomes a sham and a mocker. In some of our little villages and towns, and in the South—where, t.y tiie way, the beautiful custom of decorating the soldiers' graves was inaugurated—when a death occurs, friends who nave gardens send in a few simple flowers which, without much art, are put into the sleeper's hands, and carried in their pulseless clasp to the grave. Not blooming buds but dark green cedar or trailing ivy is brought as a Iribute to old age; and we have seen a sheaf of wheat, tied simply with a white ribbon, lying upon the cnflin of one who had gone full of years and honors.
