Instead Sam Parks made the tie up in the Iron trade complete by ordering strikes on two buildings where J. M. Cornell, president of the Iron league, has contracts. Another strike was ordered on a big Job in Staten, Island, where Mllliken Bros, are the contractors. Parks says he will order strikes on three buildings In Jersey today. Some years ago he publicly announced his joy when there were strong probabilities of a union between church and state. The plant of the Employers' association to resume work on all buildings received another serious setback when the steam fitters and their helpers were ordered out on strike. About 1,500 juen nre involved. The strike is declared on all the buildings in course of construction in the entire city. Even on the Jobs of the Fuller company, which has an agreement with the united board of building trades, the men went out. The unions demand an Increase of wages, and the employers refuse to grant It. WAS SUCCESSFUL Washington, Aug. 4.—Secretary Root has made public all the papers relating to the investigation into the government contract for gloves with E. U. Lyon. This contractor obtained the gloveB from Littauer Bros., the senior member of the firm, Lucius N. Littauer, being a member of congress. statements at the time created a sensation. The late King Humbert was Sarto's personal friend and graciously acceded his request to be allowed to assume the title of Patriarch of Venice. King Emmanuel, it is known, is his warm admirer. Crispi, the distinguished statesman and for years premier of Italy, whose hostility to the entire Catholic hierarchy is well known, had the highest regard for Sarto and used him as an intermediary In dealing with the Vatican. People generally believe that Sarto's election presages peace between state and church, and for this reason his election is everywhere Pius X. Chosen as the Official Title of the New Pope. Secretary Root has referred the case to the department of justice in order that it may be ascertained if the law has been violated and, if so, that appropriate measures may be taken In the premises. On Feb. 1 the unions informed the bosses they would ask for an increase of wages at the expiration of the agreement. An increase of $1 a day was demanded for the steam titters and 70 cents for the helpers. In the case of the helpers the employers offered to increase the wages 20 cents a day. He then returned to the chapel and was seated on a chair on the highest step of the altar, where the cardinals approached, ono by one, kissed the foot, and then tho hand, of the new prelate. They then received the benediction of the Pope. The new Pope was then given the fisherman's ring, which was Immediately delight. A great crowd congregated In St. Mark's square and many people entered the cathedral of which Sarto liad long been bishop. A Great Spanish Strike. BRENNAN and ROBERTS PHILADELPHIA STRIKE FAIL8. Madrid, Aug. 4.—The threatened general strike has commenced in several centers, Including Barcelona, Murcla, Cadiz, Honda and Alcoy. The general unrest Is largely attributed to bad harvests, but the Immediate motive for the strike is to re-enforce the demand for the release of numerous workmen who have been thrown Into prison for offenses In connection with recent strikes. The leaders of the movement are exhorting the members of the •trades unions not to return to work until all the imprisoned men have been released. He was always of a serious turn of mind, and when a young man his rector said of him that he had "never been a child." For most of his years he was a parish priest in the Province of Venice, finally becoming a bishop. It was then that his executive qualities and deep learning flrBt became known to the authorities of the church. He brings to bis high office a character of the most attractive modesty, unusual energy and fine qualities as an administrative officer and organizer. WAS SUCCESSFUL Washington, Aug. 4.—Secretary Root has made public all the papers relating to the investigation into the government contract for gloves with E. U. Lyon. This contractor obtained the gloveB from Littauer Bros., the senior member of the firm, Lucius N. Littauer, being a member of congress. statements at the time created a sensation. The late King Humbert was Sarto's personal friend and graciously acceded his request to be allowed to assume the title of Patriarch of Venice. King Emmanuel, it is known, is his warm admirer.
