Rome, July 31.—The conclave of cardinals, which will elect a successor to Pope Leo XIII., began today. The cardinals this morning entered the Vatican for the last time preparatory to their voluntary imprisonment until the new Pope Is elected. The first ceremony was a mass of the Holy Ghost, followed by a sermon, "Pro Eligendo Pontiflcl," In which the preacher exhorted the members to make quick the holy choice. After preliminaries, the prelates entered the Vatican proper, where the cells for the conclave are located. The doors were then closed and locked, not to be opened till the conclave is over. The first ballot takes place tomorrow morning. For visiting the famous Connemara marble quarries near Becess the local authorities provided a dilapidated, damp, grimy landau, with two jaded horses and a "Jarvey" of the usual class. It was doubted whether their majesties would enter such an equipage, but to the delight of the crowd of peasants and barefooted women with red petticoats who lined the steep, ruddy hill, the king, smiling at the singularity of the vehicle, entered without hesitation, the queen, princess and the Earl of Dudley following him. The "jarvey" was somewhat nervous, and the king asked a member of his suit to mount the box beside him. Officials Say Reports Are Exaggerated. Havana. July 31.—The government officials here declared today that the reports of the uprising in Santiago province have been greatly exaggerated. The trouble originated with a few malcontents, who took to the woods, and it is believed they will be speedily suppressed. A pleasing feature is the assurances of support coming to the government from unions of veterans. The press of the island generally discourages the belief that tfye uprising is really a fact. While no official investigation into the cause and responsibility for the tragedy has yet been begun, officials who will take a prominent part in the proceedings have made a careful inspection of the scene.
