BRAINERD, {DAVID BELDEN ( EMSHA W. BAXTER. Mr Dear Friends Phillips and Brydbs :— Not having timo for two letters, I send you a few lines on joint account. I wrote Mr. Beyei from London, and I trust the letter was received; since that time. I have been constantly on the wing. Ban out Irom that great mart of commorce to Oxford, the seat of nineteen of England's great Colleges, famous during the last six hundred years; walked around among those gray old buildings, where the most celebrated of the writers, historians and poets, of our language were drilled to accomplish great things. The City has no beauty, but any one who knows its powor over English mind and history, could not fail to catch something of inspiration. Went on to Leamington and Stratford-on-Avon, the great pilgrimage ground of Americans, and in that neighborhood, viewed some of the finest landscapes in the world. In one of the Parks, from which Shakspeare is said to have stolen his deer, we saw hundreds of the 'same stock feeding. I am afraid my friend " Dolph" with his rifle, would have forgotteu all about laws against poaching, and would soon have had a buck over his shoulders.— Nothing in nature has so charmed mo, as the English lawns, with noble Avenues of old trees, and roads smooth as marble floors, the accumulated production of wealth, and centuries of time. In our country, of course, we must wait. Trees are not grown in a year—neither can one generation effect what successive and combined generations here have done. I do not much admire London. Its parks are beautiful, and the gatherings there in the pleasant afternoons, of pedestrians, equestrians and aristocracy in carriages, are very attractive. Still, you dread its crooked and crowded streets, and you weary of its sooty buildings. English smoke is worse than American dust. Still, our two weeks on Portland Place, with mornings into both houses of Parliament; the Museum, the Gardens, the wonderful Tower and Hampton Park, Ac., Ac., will afford us many delightful memories hereafter. Heard "Spurgeon" on Sabbath morning, and aervice in the dusty old Aisles of West Minister Abbey, stood by the graves of the historic dead of all professions; and learned, I trust some new lessons of vanity of all earthly good. Came over to Brussels, looked around among its Office in Express Office Au;;. 10, 'Uo. Sc . anton, May 2,1807—ly Troprietot. 333 South Front Street, Phil'a BRANCH nOUSE,—Ellieotfs Wharf, foot of Cross St., Turning over an old book the other day, we found a Bet of rules for discovering people's characters, by tbo length and formation of their noses. This art has been forgotten in inventions of later times. It is simple in its application, and comprehensive to the meanest understanding. Its chief advantage, however, is that— whereas the bumps on a man's head are hidden beneath his hair or wig, and worse qualities they indicate, the less will he permit them to be examined—here, on the contrary, the index of his character is precisely the most prominent feature of his face. It would seem as if nature had taken this precaution in order to render hypocrisy unavailable. A person might endeavor, no doubt, to keep the world in the dark by merely putting the handkerchief to his nose, like a chicken that thrusts its head into a corner and fancies itself invisible. But in a case of this studied concealment, it would not be uncharitable to conclude, that he was characterised by such an atrocious nose as would BALTIMORE, Mn. Pittston, Oct. 18,18G6.-tf This dance is not much, but the extras are glorious. If men were women, there would be no snch dancing. Bat they are only men, and so the thing goes on by women's love of it.— When a boy, we used to visit those Dutch danees, and trip the whirling beer barrels as they passed our feet, and then run for dear life.— We still feel the instinct of tripping in oar toes. Pittston, March 1,1863. Ajjent for the sale of Vaughn's Celebrated OPPOSITE COOPER'S IIALL, Mistress—(Re-exaininingcritically.) George, you are dismissed. Their life is one continual contest for land' to stand on. Not haying soon thoir enormous dykes, which are the resultof generations of labor, and maintained by most vigorous governmental machinery, ono could not possibly imagine works so enormous to accomplish such results. But Holland is rich, notwithstanding, and perhaps no other part of Europe is making more steady advances in national thrift. The use of wooden shoos is very common. There are no lences—ditches and small canals serving instead. All their great meadows are dotted with elegant black and white cattle and flocks',of sheep; ship loads aro constantly going to England. The women from some of the provinces wear most curious head-dresses—not describablo by letter. Passing trom Holland, we struck across Germany to Berlin. Germany in the North is one unbroken plain. We rode 490 miles without seeing undetached rock but onco, and without a single tunnel. Soil is not good by nature, but is farmed with most scrupulous care, and with utmost attention to little things. Not a twig of a tree, or handful of grass by the road-side is wasted. Such industry I had never seen. No " eight hour" rule obtains here. The women labor in the fields, and I may say, are the donkies and stevedores of the land.— Have seen them engaged in all out-door occupations. In Saxony, especially, they carry immense loads, in huge square baskets strapped to their shoulders, bare headed, legged and footed. I suppose this is in a large measure attributable to the military system which absorbs the labor of the husband, and forces the wifelto seek food as she can. But Prussia is a noble country. Strong and energetic, and now wields great moral power, as a Protestant nation. Of course we did up the palaces, and picture galleries, and saw all the mementoes of Frederick the Great, eten to the pipes of his " tobacco parliament." The statuary of Prussia reverses the rule in Italy aud France. The women are draped, while our poor sex is left even without the solitary " fig leaf." Back again from Dresden to the Rhine at Cologne, spent the sabbath, and then came up this famous river. It is beautiful and grand. Its ruined towers and castles, still perched on al'rtostevory commanding eminence, its carved and fretted ridges, its rounded and swelling head lands, the most sharp yet graceful bendings of the streams, and the tbick and graceful adorning of the vines, seen climbing the rocks everywhere, all combine to make the Rhine a fit subject for poetry and romance. I have seen and looked about this place, and my opinion is, that a man or woman can go to the infernal!s, by a very short from this spot. Here you see gambling of both sexes, to perfection. I cannot express my loathing at the eight of jewelled fingers of ladies staking the gold by hundreds, sitting at the same table with crowds of unprincipled men. I most close. Truly Your Friend, T. 10, 'Uo. Corner Wyoming Avenue and Spruce St., To the Gents I would with this announce, lie so kind and in my stndy bounce, Where the best of dressing you shall have, Friullng too, dying and a shave.
