I pray Sure me heart's not me own for this many a day That aged father of yours, who has been so closely by your side during the process of your trial, I see him not here to-day, that sorely afflicted old man, yea, you yourself havecertainly some reason, some excuse at least, to wish that you had never been born, orat LDast had never passed the ago'of an innocent childhood. Hut you grew to be a man, and al the early age of about IS years, you fell into tho hands of that fatal, deceptive timper, into the wicked wiles and dangerous snarps of a designing woman ; and instead of tearing yourself away like Joseph of old did from Potiphar's wife, instead of fleeing from her as from an enemy, at the sacrifice of :i mere garment shall T say, yea, even if need lie of every limb or life itself; for then such a death would have been far better and more honorable, than this lifeyou now have. Instead I say, of making your escape from that fearful woman, you permitted yourself to become entangled in tiie meshes of that faithless daughter of Eye, who had violated the most solemn vows and obligations of married life, and had turned her soul against her husband, having planned and plotted his death at the hands of an assassin; and you agreeing to become, and actually becoming, that assassin ; the murderer of that innocent man, Elisha W. llaliock, a man who had done you 110 wrong, but had been your benefactor and friend, and perhaps had scarcely suspected that you had any design upon his life. You Imvc slain an in locent fellow man, butchered him, as it were, without cause or provocation, simply because he was in the way of your hellish designs ; slain too, in the broad sunshine of heaven, after you and your wicked paramour had sent away every other member of the family, slain at his own home, in his own door-yard, pouring out the life blood of that poor man 011 liis own soil, leaving this body a corpse weltered therein. Therefore, in obedience requirements of tho law, and in pursuance oC the verdict of the jury, I will proceed to pass sentence. Stand up Air. Hamilton. So with man you have reached that point, in the opinion at least ot this «*v»nrt, though not entirely ho in ttio judgment of youreouncil, where, with you, tile law ends and mercy begins, or may begin. 1 am only the humblo instrument in the hands of the law to pass sentence and judgment against you, according to tlie verdict of that jury. This is but tlie workings of a good government, though to you the saddest reality of life. This is the process which man has provided, by the forms of a well regulated judiciary for the trial, the test of one's guilt or innocence upon the gravest charges that can be perl'erred against him. Every right vouchsafed an American citizen under the constitution and laws have been granted you. This particular one made his ftfinl bow and gracefully retired, facing his friends, to which he fondly imagined was the right door of exit. Alas! It led to an empty china ctosbt, anifhe was inside and had shut the door before he quite realized his agonising blunder. 15ut even that might have been borne were it not that the family watch-dog had secretly crept in there to doze. The intrusion hurt his feelings, and lie naturally and promptly resented it. The soul—and the garments—of that young man are bittcily rent. So much for baslifulness.
