CARRIER PIGEONS WHAT HAPPENED TO A DANBURY Lawyers and Justices. Lively. Redding inyitations T3RICK YARD. JD J08EPII P. SCHOOLEY. ODE TO A TATER BUG. The carrier pigeons which are to be used on the Graphic balloon voyage are of the Antwerp tpye, and were imported to Itivercllff, near Stratlord, Conn., by Mr. O. S* Ifubbell, in the spring and fall of 1870. He paid $600 for the first half dozen pair, and $000 for second half dozen. The fine bird called "Ariel" cost $100. This bird won the great "international prize," and is considered the best of his breed in the world. These pigeons always return to their home in Ilivercliff, no matter how great the distance may be at which they are tossed up from that place. The lirst time they were tossed up after their arrival in this country they were gone several days, and some of them a week, returning greatly exhausted. Mr. Hubbell attributes the length of their first absence to attempt to return to their old haunts, but findthe Atlantic had had.to be crossed, returned to their new home, after having traversed the coast, probably as far as the Bay 9f Fundy. It appeared that there was a young woman, a fine spirited girl, engaged at a wash-tub opposite an open door. Jtftt behind her was a young man, as is generally the case, and in the yard .was an old buck that was allowed the freedom of the premises which is not always the cas?, we are glad to say. Well, this buck came to the door and looked in, and the young man, going c!ose behind the young woman pointed his finger straight at the buck, and the old fellow recognizing at once the pressing character of this mute invitation, put down his head and dashed forward, and the miserable man stepped to one side and lied, and the young woman, all unconscious of the arrangement received the shock without warning, and passed over the tub, and the air for an instant appeared to be full of slippers and wet clothes and soap and hot water anil suds. And the next minute that goat came flying out of that door at a dreadful speed, bald the whole length of his spine, and with a wild look in his eye. And for an houraf-. terwards he stood bnck of the barn scratching his chin and trying to recall all the circumstances In the unfortunate affair.— DariSieryNeu's. s. P. Hpringfield papers revive tlie story of the young mnii in Urattleboro', Vermont, who is "finishing" Dickens' story, "The Mystery of Edwin Drood." The Union, in fuct, on Saturday, devoted nearly eight columns to the matter, and asserts that the work is not only nearly completed, but that a new novel by Dickens is to be forthcoming from the same source, "an amanuensis, a medium, if you will, but an unprofessional one, and a person who knew nothing whatever about spiritualism until this strange experience befell him ; who has no theories to advance or proselytes to make, and who cares not a flg apparently whether spiritualism stand or fall." lie is described as a good-looking man, a machinist, not far from thirty years of age, a native of Boston, with no training whatever for literary work. The Union writer proceeds to give a long history of the way in which he came to undertake the work, follows it up witli extracts from several chapters of the forth-coming volume, and coneiutiea with the following: Mvrh 31), 1871-J}* 4 BUCHLEY'S IIKIPROWED 5 I CUCUMBER WOOD PUMP. After two days' careful and aottu-wluit critical examination, I go away, f confess, 11 good iiqy.1 puzzled. I reject, in the first place, as Mt im]Do8sibiIity —as every one would do after thoroughly investigating the matter—the theory that this manuscript was written by the young man, .Mr. A. He says lie lias never read the first volume, and I care not whether lie has or 110, being fully convinced that he is not capable of writing so much as one page of the second volume. This, of course, is no disparagement ; for how many men are capable «f«dolng what Dickens left undone? I aui driven, then, to accept one of the two .conclusions. Either some man of genius k using this individual as a gobetweeai, in order to place an extraordinary work before tho public in an extraordinary way, or the hacfc js, as it professes to be, dictated by lDickC*«»£ himself from tho other world. The one supposition is scarcely more astounding than the ether. If there is in Vermont a man, heretofore unheard of, who is able to write &s Dickens wrote, he surely liaa no cause I# resort to any such device as this. If, on the other hand, Charles Dickens himself, 'though dead, yet speaketh,' what shall we next expect? It is but fair to say that, with the fullest opportunity for investigation, I found not the least evidence or any hand of fraud, while the name of the 'amanuensis,' were I allowed to give it, would dispel any suggestion of that kind from the minds of every citizen of this place who knows him." The carrier pigeons which are to be used on the Graphic balloon voyage are of the Antwerp tpye, and were imported to Itivercllff, near Stratlord, Conn., by Mr. And for an houraf-. terwards he stood bnck of the barn scratching his chin and trying to recall all the circumstances In the unfortunate affair.— DariSieryNeu's. s. The Union, in fuct, on Saturday, devoted nearly eight columns to the matter, and asserts that the work is not only nearly completed, but that a new novel by Dickens is to be forthcoming from the same source, "an amanuensis, a medium, if you will, but an unprofessional one, and a person who knew nothing whatever about spiritualism until this strange experience befell him ; who has no theories to advance or proselytes to make, and who cares not a flg apparently whether spiritualism stand or fall." lie is described as a good-looking man, a machinist, not far from thirty years of age, a native of Boston, with no training whatever for literary work. It is but fair to say that, with the fullest opportunity for investigation, I found not the least evidence or any hand of fraud, while the name of the 'amanuensis,' were I allowed to give it, would dispel any suggestion of that kind from the minds of every citizen of this place who knows him." OLACKSMITIIING A few days since while Joseph Selby was gathering raspberries he came to what he supposed to be a log, and being somewhat tired he sat down upon it to take a rest, when, much to his surprise, he commenced moving down the hill. He was so much frightened that he did not know for some time what was the propelling ]Dower, but when he recovered liimsolf he found that it was a monster snake oarrying him upon its baok. He supposed it was from fifty to sixty feet long and as thick as his body. He fell off during the journey, and the snake continued down into the hollow. This snake has been seen by various parties for several years past, mostly in the raspberry season, but nobody has enjoyed such an intimate acquaintance witii the monster as Mr. 8elby. We would advise everybody to be on tho lookout for this reptilian monster during the raspberry time. —ISurnesviUc Enter- Jan I'7: D. M ALEXANDER. MILLINERY. CLASSICS, MUSIC.
