April 23.—In proposing the toast of the president of the United States Baron Speck von Sternburg. successor to Ambassador von Holleben, at the dinner given to him at the Manhattan club by Mr. Herman Ridder and Mr. Edward Uhl declared that while unpleasantness might have arisen between Germany and this country. It was all due to misunderstanding and nothing rise. In a clearer understanding, he asserted, lay the surest method of preventing any future frictioa. Nearly one hundred other guests from all walks of business and professional life applauded his words. Later on the principal guest heard, however, that friendly as the Ignited States may be. The dispatch says the fight occurred on April 17, seven miles west of Gombai ru. Colonel Plunket, six captains, two lieutenants, two whites, 48 slkhs and 124 Africans were killed. Thirty-seven men escaped and reached the camp. In a financial table the board finds that the capitalization of the seven mills U $11,250,000. Friesland and Extinguished the Fire In Forty Minutes,. He admitted that the railroad companies owned nine-tenths of the 20.000 shares of the coal company. This, it in contended, will be declared a violation of the railroad company's charter. Liverpool, April 23.—The American liner Fri island, which arrived today, reports that when she was three days out from Philadelphia smoke was discovered Issuing from the hatches. In the hold cotton, tallow, parafin and rosin were stored. Captain Apfeld was breakfasting when the* fire was discovered. He quietly left the table and went on deck. One of the batches was Immediately openeu and Apfeld swung into the hold, amid blinding smoke. At the same time he shouted to mem hers of the crew who had assembled: "Come along men; there's.work to be done hero." The officers and crew promptly responded and. after forty minutes' work, the flames were subdued. Later the passengers drew up resolutions, praising the captain and crew for averting a disaster, presenting them to the captain in the saloon. On the question of salaries paid to officials the board shows that out of every hundred dollars received from goods made $1.62 was paid in salaries in the Pall River cotton mills, $1.51 In New Bedford and $1.43 in LowelL Inspection of the mills by the board itself and by an Impartial expert, the report says, has shown that the Lowell corporations labor under a disadvantage in comparison with those having modern plants. S7»4 40U Spring Valley, Wis., April 23.—One man was killed and three others were fatally injured In D wreck on the Spring Valley branch of the Chicago, St- Raul. Minneapolis and Omaha railroad. A mixed train was stalled on a hill two miles west of here, and two cars that had be n left on the track while the rest of the train went over the ridge broke away. They gained terrific speed and collided with another train coming up the grade. When the cars started most of the passengers and the train crew jumped and were only slightly injured. April 23.—In proposing the toast of the president of the United States Baron Speck von Sternburg. successor to Ambassador von Holleben, at the dinner given to him at the Manhattan club by Mr. Herman Ridder and Mr. Edward Uhl declared that while unpleasantness might have arisen between Germany and this country. It was all due to misunderstanding and nothing rise. In a clearer understanding, he asserted, lay the surest method of preventing any future frictioa. Nearly one hundred other guests from all walks of business and professional life applauded his words. Later on the principal guest heard, however, that friendly as the Ignited States may be. The dispatch says the fight occurred on April 17, seven miles west of Gombai ru. Colonel Plunket, six captains, two lieutenants, two whites, 48 slkhs and 124 Africans were killed. Thirty-seven men escaped and reached the camp. In a financial table the board finds that the capitalization of the seven mills U $11,250,000. Friesland and Extinguished the Fire In Forty Minutes,. He admitted that the railroad companies owned nine-tenths of the 20.000 shares of the coal company. This, it in contended, will be declared a violation of the railroad company's charter. Liverpool, April 23.—The American liner Fri island, which arrived today, reports that when she was three days out from Philadelphia smoke was discovered Issuing from the hatches. In the hold cotton, tallow, parafin and rosin were stored. Captain Apfeld was breakfasting when the* fire was discovered. He quietly left the table and went on deck. One of the batches was Immediately openeu and Apfeld swung into the hold, amid blinding smoke. At the same time he shouted to mem hers of the crew who had assembled: "Come along men; there's.work to be done hero." The officers and crew promptly responded and. after forty minutes' work, the flames were subdued. Later the passengers drew up resolutions, praising the captain and crew for averting a disaster, presenting them to the captain in the saloon. On the question of salaries paid to officials the board shows that out of every hundred dollars received from goods made $1.62 was paid in salaries in the Pall River cotton mills, $1.51 In New Bedford and $1.43 in LowelL Inspection of the mills by the board itself and by an Impartial expert, the report says, has shown that the Lowell corporations labor under a disadvantage in comparison with those having modern plants. A mixed train was stalled on a hill two miles west of here, and two cars that had be n left on the track while the rest of the train went over the ridge broke away. They gained terrific speed and collided with another train coming up the grade. When the cars started most of the passengers and the train crew jumped and were only slightly injured.
