Iiondon, April 18.—The report of the commission of British worklngmen who were taken to the United States at the end of last year by Alfred Moseley, a wealthy Englishman, to study conditions of labor there attracts a great deal of attention and is much discussed by the English press this morning as conveying valuable lessons to both masters and workmen, but as being on the whole a very satisfactory document from a British point of view. The report presents the views of twenty-three delegates, who make separate synopses of their deductions resulting from the American trip. The report shows a lack of unanimity, except that all agree that the British -workman has nothing to learn from the American workman, while British employers are not so far advanced as the Americans in the treatment of their employees. Fear Overturned for Overdue Vessel Norfolk, Va., April 18— Grave fears are entertained for the steamship S. B. This action of the American government is a drastic lesson to those politician* who try to bring about a cordial and permanent entente between Germany and the United States by princely visits, presents of statues or other things, all these attempts being baffled by the policy of permanent refusal." Cuturnings of the Iron and steel shipbuilders quotes Shipbuilder Crump as sayiug that "Great Britain's position as the leading shipbuilder is unassailable and unlikely to be seriously menaced for the next quarter of a century." Mr. Cummings concludes with a severe criticism of the social and moral life in America, where, he says, "gambling and pleasure seeking appear to be characteristics. The disregard for liumuiitllfe, the corruption in politics and other immoralities tend to the moral and physical deterioration of the people and must be arrested If disaster is to be avoided." 42 Nor*h Main Sfraef, fy Next to Eagle Hotel. Weight of 'Water at Niagara. Generally speaking, the yacht and gear were quite fit to stand all racing strain. The whole accident originated In an unsuspected flaw in a tnrnlmckle .eyepiece. oLflleeLJittlfi thicker than a man's thumb. Possibly the strains were calculated too fine. In any case, one turnbuckle going, the others followed Instantaneously, depriving the mast of its chief support, the feather shrouds. No spar ever built or grown could stand unsupported to this press of canvas, much less the light steel shell to which Mr. Fife trusted It. The mast snapped off and fortunately fell clear, or there might have been a heavy loss of life. It is surmised that Seaman Collier was crossing the deck at the time after leaving Sir Thomas Llpton and lost his balance with the lurch of the boat. The most is now in four pieces. It will be impossible to repuir It, but most of the rigging was duplicated beforehand, so that it will only be necessary to replace the mast and sails. Washington, April 18.—Great surprise was caused here by the bitter comments of the German press, which construes the orders for the European squadron to be at Marseilles when President loubet returns to France as a slap at Germany, especially In view of the refusal of the Invitation from Emperor William for tlie fleet to visit Kiel. A high official of the navy department said: "The fleet is going to Marseilles because the president of France is traveling, and naval contingents of other nations will pay their respects to him. If the emperor of Germany was similarly Journeying near the place where the squadron was lying it would salute him. There Is no good reason for pique on the part of Germany, but if the German people show that they think we are keeping the ships away as a discourtesy I think the squadron will be sent into German waters." Washington, April 18.—Fair tonight; Sunday, partly cloudy and warmer. t Rlot tn^Rmiila. It has been estimated that 18,000,000 feet of water passes over Niagara falls every minute. FresH ctal newspaper at Tiflis reports that a riot has taken place In the village of Suchi, In the Black sea district The peasants stormed the prison to demand a post mortem examination of a prisoner who died. They asserted that he had been beaten to death by the police; but, according to the police certificate, he died of brandy drinking. The peasants overpowered the police and liberated the prisoners. The post mortem proved thnt the prisoner's death resulted from blows, and the guilty police officials have been punished.Evans Bros. For Fresh Eggs, 18 Cts. Per Dozen. Mr. Dollar, representing the National Plasterers' union, found the plastering bad "even In the room in the White House where the delegates were received by President Roosevelt." This dog was originally German, and the name was probably given It because of being very closely allied to what is known as the water dog. Poodles are without doubt the most intelligent of all canines. W. C. Steadman, representing the parliamentary committee of the trades union cortgress, says the British workman cannot be beaten in the world for solid and well finished work. He concludes, "Unless something is done to conciliate labor in America the trust system will bring such an uprising as has not been witnessed for forty yen re." A1 Adams Convicted. Evans Bros. It is also asserted that several members of the senate combination are willing to turn state's evidence and that their testimony will not be friendly to Lee. Albany, N. Y„ April 18.—Opportunity for another outbreak of the hostility between the Republican factions was not taken when the nomination of George W. Morgnn to be state superintendent of elections was confirmed unanimously by the state senate. This development was surprising, as It had been expected by the Democrats and the Republican Insurgents that the majority would retaliate for the rejection of Frank M. Baker by the senate.
