The loss will reach $10,000, while the Insurance is only $2,000. How the fire originated is not known, hut incendiarism is hinted at. Services wefe held In the church last evening, and it is possible that the.candles may have started the fire. Buffalo, March 24.—Under the pitiless cross examination of District Attorney Coatswortb Mrs. Alice Hull Burdlck, widow of Edwin L. Burdlck, was compelled to tell the details of the clandestine lovemaklng between her and Arthur B. Pennell, wfclch, according to Mr. Burdick's partner, ultimately led to Burdick's death at the hands of "Pennell or a hired assassin." From the occasion in New Ilaven when Pennell "took me In bis arms and kissed me" Mr. Contsworth by a series of letters which Mrs. Burdlck was obliged to identify as they were presented to her led her to the quarrel with her husband over Pennell, the reconciliation when she promised to give him up and the renewal of their Intimacy In violation of this promise. Buffalo, March 24.—The Burdlck Inquest was resumed this morning. The court room was crowded. At least onehalf of the spectators were women, well dressed and evidently of social rank, but eager to hear more Impassioned love letters of Pennell and the reluctant confessions of Mrs. Burdick's duplicity. Mrs. Burdlck, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Hull, reached police headquarters at 10 O'clock. Police Justice Murphy and District Attorney Coatesworth took their places In court at 10.20. Mrs. Burdlck was escorted in a few minutes later. The oath was again administered. Mrs. Burdlck sat down and looked at her lawyer, who held a bunch of letters In his hand. She was pale, but calm. The witness admitted there had been an altercation in the Burdlck home about two years ago, but said Burdlck had not struck her with a chair and that he didn't wear court plaster after the affair ended. To hnve refused the gift would have been discourteous and unjustifiable. Miller, attorney for Burdlck In the divorce proceedings against Mrs. Burdlck. lie told in detail the steps that had been taken at the request of Mr. Burdlck to secure a divorce. He last saw Mr. Burdlck on the afternoon of the day he was murdered, when Mr. Burdlck spent half an hour with him discussing the divorce case. Burdlck did not say he had an appointment with any one at his home that night! He had never heard Pennell say he would kill himself "and Mrs. Burdlck If the divorce action was not with. In still another letter Pennell said: "As I looked Into your beautiful eyes last night I feared there was some trouble hidden there. I did not know, but I feared .it was because of some other reason than because I was going away. If there was, dearest, I wish you wouip. tell me. Burdlck, was compelled to tell the details of the clandestine lovemaklng between her and Arthur B. Pennell, wfclch, according to Mr. Burdick's partner, ultimately led to Burdick's death at the hands of "Pennell or a hired assassin." Buffalo, March 24.—The Burdlck Inquest was resumed this morning. The court room was crowded. At least onehalf of the spectators were women, well dressed and evidently of social rank, but eager to hear more Impassioned love letters of Pennell and the reluctant confessions of Mrs. Burdick's duplicity. Mrs. Burdlck, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Hull, reached police headquarters at 10 O'clock. Police Justice Murphy and District Attorney Coatesworth took their places In court at 10.20. Mrs. Burdlck was escorted in a few minutes later. The oath was again administered. Mrs. Burdlck sat down and looked at her lawyer, who held a bunch of letters In his hand. She was pale, but calm. The witness admitted there had been an altercation in the Burdlck home about two years ago, but said Burdlck had not struck her with a chair and that he didn't wear court plaster after the affair ended. The secretary .refers to the part taken by the military governor of Cuba In the postotttce cases in which Itathbone was a defendunt, saying that General Wood had the approval of the secretary of wur at every step and exorcised only such control as was necessary as military governor. He refers to the game of jai alal and declares that the gift accepted by General Wood had no relation whatevfer to any official uctlon of his, but was part of the expression of gratitude of the Cuban people toward the representative of the United States. To hnve refused the gift would have been discourteous and unjustifiable. The action of the customs officials In reference to the gift, the secretary suys, wus strictly In accordance with law and official propriety. The Indorsement closes as follows: "There Is no foundation for the charges." President Vasquez is nway, having gone into the Interior of the republic. An effort will be made to capture him before he can gather the government forces outside the city for an attack upon the city. Miller, attorney for Burdlck In the divorce proceedings against Mrs. Burdlck. lie told in detail the steps that had been taken at the request of Mr. Burdlck to secure a divorce. He last saw Mr. Burdlck on the afternoon of the day he was murdered, when Mr. Burdlck spent half an hour with him discussing the divorce case. Burdlck did not say he had an appointment with any one at his home that night! He had never heard Pennell say he would kill himself "and Mrs. Burdlck If the divorce action was not with.
