Pennell or a hired assassin murdered Edwin L. Burdick. Washington, March 18.—By a vote of 73 to 5 the senate ratified the canal treaty with Colombia in exactly the form in which it was negotiated by Secretory Huy and Senor Herran. The senators voting against the treaty were Messrs. Morgan and Pettus of Alabama, Martin and Daniel of Virginia and Teller of Colorado, all Democrats. Six senators were paired. Washington, March 18.—The report of the Anthracite Commission was signed this morning by the various members and at 10.30 was taken to the White House by Hon. George Gray, president of the commission, and Carroll D. Wright, recorder, and placed in the hands of President Roosevelt. It will not be made public until the President shall have had an opportunity to go over It carefully and send copies to President Mitchell and the representatives of the operators. As a compliment to the members of the commission and in appreciation of their work, the President will give them a dinner at the White House tonight. March 18.—A double tragedy occurred at the Opp House here as a result of a quarrel between Lewis Itoutson and his seventeen-yearold wife" Myrtle. Itoutson entered a room at the hotel which was tilled with guests at a masquerade party, lie tired three shots from a revolver, which scattered the crowd. He then walked up to his mother-in-law, Mrs. John Opp, and tired point blank at her, seriously wounding her, and afterward shot and fatally wounded his wife. Pittsburg, March 18..;—John Mc- Knight and Albert Cornelius were instantly killed and William Bustler and John McGleavey probably fatally injured at the Sandusky street crossing of the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago railroad, in Allegheny, this morning. The men were on a large furniture van. The accident was due to a dense fog. Another fatality due to fog occurred at Fifth avenue and Stevenson street, Pittsburg. Thomas A. S., March 18.—The government steamers Minto and Stanley, which have been Imprisoned in nil lee pnek in the strnlt of Northumberland for fourteen weeks, have been towed in here. The Minto hns a broken propeller, and both steamers are considerably damaged. The release of the craft was unexpected, as early in the day they both seemed as firmly held as for weeks, and dynamite wits being used to make a channel for the Minto. The Ice pack disintegrated with little warning. 'Phone. THE WEATHER. The Alabama senator then made the final speech against the treaty, addressing the senate for an hour. Senator Cuiloin as chairman of the committee on foreign relations replied in behalf of the treaty. It was briefly au offer of an increase of 12% per cent for pick mining, an increase of 14 per cent for machine mining and a nine hour duy at $2.70 per day for drivers, other mine laborers to receive a proportionate increase. The miners immediately went into executive session to consider the offer and promptly rejected it, being In session only a few minutes. Tamaqua, March 18.—Two trolley cars on the Schuylkill traction line came together in a terrific impact this morning. Both cars were demolished. The motorman and 15 passengers were seriously injured and some of them are likely to die. The treaty as ratified gives the United States exclusive right for 100 years, renewable at the option of the United States, to complete the I'aiiHmu canal, maintain, protect and operate it. They have another suspect, and from District Attorney Coatsworth's questioning it is easy to know who it Is. New York, March 18.—Elephant Jingo, said to be larger than Jumbo, recently bought ill London by Bostock, for exhibition in this country, died on March 12 on board the White Star Liner Georgic on the passage from Liverpool to New York and was burled at sea. From the time of sailing. Jingo fretted and pined away. He was 22 years old and weighed six tons, and was 12 feet high. He was valued at $61),000, at which figure he was insured for sea risk. The men were on a large furniture van. The accident was due to a dense fog. Another fatality due to fog occurred at Fifth avenue and Stevenson street, Pittsburg. Thomas A. The release of the craft was unexpected, as early in the day they both seemed as firmly held as for weeks, and dynamite wits being used to make a channel for the Minto. It was briefly au offer of an increase of 12% per cent for pick mining, an increase of 14 per cent for machine mining and a nine hour duy at $2.70 per day for drivers, other mine laborers to receive a proportionate increase. The miners immediately went into executive session to consider the offer and promptly rejected it, being In session only a few minutes. Tamaqua, March 18.—Two trolley cars on the Schuylkill traction line came together in a terrific impact this morning. Both cars were demolished.
