TO ADJOURN ON THURSDAY BAR An Interesting Programme and a Fine Peculiar Accident to Driver Boy at No. The Pittston Clerks' Association held a meeting in Howell'9 hall, and after the business there was a banquet and entertainment. The chief reason for this meeting was the desire of 45 lady clerks to affiliate themselves with the assocletion. A short time ago the Idea of forming a lady clerks'organization was considered in union circles here and a meeting, was called. At this meeting it was decided that the lady clerlts should become membert of the clerks' association, but that they could form a separate organization at any time they wished. Forty-five of them are now members of the organization, and it Is thought that the number wfil be increased in the near future. At the opening of the social part of the programme, William Scheetz, the temporary chairman, made an address. A double quartette, composed of Windsor Jones and party, gave selections that were much enjoyed. Mis3 Harrop sang a solo, after which Alexander Davis gave a recitation. There was a duet by Windsor Jones and Miss Mae Evans, and William Jones and Louis James rendered solos. All these numbers were thoroughly enjoyed and heartily applauded by all present. Mrs. Dora Lee-Cook was the cateress, and she served an appetizing banquet. The hall was tastily decorated, red, white and blue bunting predominating. Just before the banquet ended, all joined In singing Spread. TALKS WITH ADVERTISERS. "I don't l:now what struck me," is what Thomas Gibbons, of Browntown, has to say of the manner in which he was injured at 11 o'clock this morning in the No. 5 mine, of the Pennsylvania Coal Co. The 16-year-old driver boy was alone in that part of the mine and when he became conscious after the accident he could not account for the Injuries he had in some way received. At the hospital, Dr. Lockhead found that the young fellow had 4 fractured skull and that the upper part of his face was badly lacerated. Comrades found Gibbons lying on the ground and the surroundings gave rise to the supposition that he was kicked by a mule. Jiis injuries are serious. 5 Mine. Special bps! Price List. Little Probability of Extra Session. Vicksburg, Tenn., March 14.—The seriousness of the flood situation in this region was evinced today when Captain J. T. McClellan announced that beginning tonight a shotgun patrol will be established on the 240 miles of the northern Louisiana levee under his charge. McClellan is president of the levee board of the Fifth Louisiana district, and ho says the other levee boards of Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi arc about to establish shotgun patrols to prevent the cutting or levees. Rumors are rife that the people in the lowlands on the opposite side of the river hope to relieve the flood their sfde by cutting into the levee Washington, March .14.—Finding it would be difficult to hold a quorum of the senate nfter next week, the UepuBlienn steering committee took notion ((Hiking to a vote on the Panama canal treaty unamended and the ratification of the Cuban treaty with the fatal Democratic amendment attuehed. The whole affair was a most enjoyable one and much credit is due the efficient committee, which was composed of John Joyce, William Mc- Kaig, William Scheetz. William Monahan and Benjamin Mayo. It is doubtful if any fee approximating that sum has ever been paid to an American lawyer for strictly legal services. Other lawyers have proltted to the extent of hundreds of thousand.! through forming corporations and protecting them against attack, but never before have millions lu cash been turned over upon the completion of any legal work. For many years it has been lndieved that the largest fee ever paid to a lawyer in one case was the $250,000 thai .loliu K. DISCOUNT Southampton, March 14.—Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain arrived at Southampton this morning from Capetown. There was a large crowd of notables at the dock to meet the Secretary and great enthusiasm prevailed among the populace. Replying to the mayor's address of welcome, Chamberland said he was glad to get back to England. He believed that a new chapter had opened In Africa and that now the question of supremacy has been settled for all time. Immediately afterward, Chamberlain started for London. SHE MADE A CHANGE. On the decision of this caucus as to whether the minority will vote for the convention with Colombia In Its present form rests the fate of that measure. The administration is auxious to have the canal trcuty ratified as negotiated, and Republican senators will uuite in fighting all amendments which can be adopted or defeated by n majority vote.
