WM. BOND, Oregon. JADWIN'i SUBDUING LINIMENT "Oh, but Mr. Eden's rich, Tom." "Tlio rich inen of to-day are our poor men to-morrow, Lizzie. I wouldn't give the snap of a finger for a rich father-in-law as a dependence. I mean to trust in myself, an honest purpose and a clear conscience. And ns for a wife, I want a woman with life, purpose, industry and independence in her, not a great bundle of silks, laces, bonnets and curl-papers, with a pretty little helpless do-nothing doll, hidden somewhere inside of the crinoline circumvallation. And then, again, Lizzie, I am somewhat of an independent young man, wonderfullv given to the work of taking care of myself. I happen to be at the bottom of the ladder, and if T ever get to the top of it my own strength will carry me there. Now, a wife on my back, instead of on the rounds of a ladder, keeping step with me upwards, would be a dead weight, and keep me at or near the foot forever. No, no, pretty, I cannot afford one of our finished boarding school misses for a wife—the luxury is too expensive for me. So I am going to marry a girl who knows something of real life—a true, good, patient, enduring, selfdenying, sweet, darling little body, who is not ashamed to earn her living with the needle. And I can tell you what, Holly, I only wish you were more like Harriet Parker ; there would bo forty chances in favor of your marrying a man of sense to those you have now. Don't you know that a new society has been formed among the young men, and that some of the very best 'catches' among them have signed a pledge not to marry any girl who is not willing to commence matrimonial life with two rooms and a kitchen, and who doesn't know how to bake, cook and sew, and to wash and iron into the bargain ? Church wan married four times, and his wives were all buried in a certain graveyard. It became necessary, ultimately, to remove the remains of the dear departed to another cemetery. Church undertook the work himself ; but, in carrying the sainted dead out. in a furniture car, the bones unfortunately got mixed, and when re-interment began, even Church himself was unable to tell which was Emily and which was Hannah. After doing tlio best he could, he had the four graves closed; but, being a strictly accurate man, lie felt that it would be wrong to use the old headstones when he was not at all certain that Hannah's dust might not at all bo under her tombstone. So, ill order to be precise, lie had a new set made with such inscrip-- tions as these: "Hero lies Hannah Church, (and probably part of Emily,) who wtDs born," &c., &c. I can tell you what, my dainty little sister, there's a reform at work, and men worth having are beginning to choose between no marriage or marriage with girls of plainer notions and more useful accomplishments than are possessed by the butterflies who lounge ou sofas all day, knitting zephyr or reading novels. I can tell you what, my dainty little sister, there's a reform at work, and men worth having are beginning to choose between no marriage or marriage with girls of plainer notions and more useful accomplishments than are possessed by the butterflies who lounge ou sofas all day, knitting zephyr or reading novels.
