Bass, Jr., secretary of the Swarthmore Public Library Board of Directors, announced at the quarterly Board meeting Tuesday night in the Library that three vacancies will exist on the Board in January, due to the expiration of the terms of Dr. J. Alfred Calhoun president of the Board, Mrs. Russell L. Snyder, and Mr. Bass. The Board hopes that residents of the Borough who are interested in the Library will file applications for election to the Board. Blanks may be secured from Librarian Bettina.liunter at the desk in the Library. Application must be filled and filed with the Librarian before midnight, December 31. Miss Hunter reported 181 new reader registrations in September, October, and December, 127 adult, and 53 juveniles. In the same period 761 new books were added, 561 adult titles and 200 juvenile. The three month circulation total was 14,003 with the total from January through November"running 15 per cent# ahead of ihe. saijie periqd-in 195i. David Narbeth, this unusual mystery farce stars Alison Roberts as thg spinster librarian who sinks her life savings in an old New England inn.and finds her life invaded by a host of zany guests including- .James S. Feight, M.' Katrina Ives Martha Keighton, WiUiam E. Gibson, Lewis E. Godenough, Nancy Bolich, Cornelia McKernan, John A. Jefferson, Stuart L. Dance, Walter Emmott, Jean McGlathery Dance, George Jarden and Ned Pyle. H. C. Mabbott and William W. McClarin are the stage managers responsible for the interior of Ye Olde Colonial Inn. Electricity is handled by John Manning and sound effects by Patty Campbell. Estelle Jarden is prompter for the show. Stage decorators under the direction of Mrs. Dbhald Crosset are "Mrs. William Bailey, Mrs. Robert Clothier, Mrs. J. Roy Snape, Mrs. Howard Jackson, Mrs. Daniel,Harris apd Mrs. W. John Stettner, assistant minister of the Presbyterian Church, present a 30 minute film on the Revised Standard Version of the Bible for the Legion's November meeting. High School Christmas Concert Dec. 17 Aids Service Projects Swarthmore High School's chorus, glee club, and orchestra will present their annual Christmas Concert to the community on Wednesday night, December 17 in the high school auditorium. The musical organizations have agreed to continue last year's innovation and lend their concert to thfe school's United Charities which will limit to this one evening its request for community support in its service project work. A gift tree in the auditorium will await contributions to sponsor the1 work already pledged to the Kinderheim in Stade, Germany, the Haines House in Alaska, and the Warbranch, Kentucky School plus other projects still to be announced. Students in international, costumes will receive contributions in the halls prior to the concert and transfer them to the gift tree in a dramatized form. ..The Christmas Concert is widely anticipated as a musical event and the addition of world friendship theme emphasizes, for students as well as their supporters in the community and vicinity, the I Christmas Spirit in action. Dinner Saturday Will Honor Football Squad Hoffman to M.C.; Former Players to Be Guests At H.S. Event The annual Football Night dinner, honoring the Swarthmore High School football squad, will be held in the High School cafeteria tomorrow evening, December 6. It will be an occasion befiitting the. 1952 team's fine record of eight victories and a single defeat. The Swarthmore Citizens Athletic Committee, composed of fathers of present and former Swarthmore - players, has made all the arrangements as if has for years past. Members of the committee will assume the role of waiters and serve the dinner, which is largely prepared by mothers of the players. Henry Hofmann, who helped to coach some of Swarthmore's well remembered teams, will be master of ceremonies. The guest list will feature former Swarthmore High players now on various college football squads. Among those invited are: Dick Burtis, Dana Swan, Tom Simkin and Avery Blake, captain, of Swarthmore College; Bill McHenry, recently elected captain ql the Washington ' and Lee £eam; Jack Smith, captain, and Paul Tarr of* Dickinson; William Crouthers, PMC; Barry Coleman, Hampton Institute; Harold Johnston, P & M; Sob Bradford, Sewahee; Fred Campbell, Duke; Jim Carter, Bowdoin; and Jack Thompson and Howard Arrison of this year's Princeton freshman squad. * - .The Junior Hlj^h squads will come in for dessert at 7:30 alon£ with the cheerleaders and Student Band President Ronnie Gold. Several musical selections will follow-thie dinner, with singing led by the Chorus President Dana Swan. After the various guests are introduced and several, special awards made, Assistant Coach Walter Hall, Jr., will present the members of the Junior Varsity Squad. Then will come the big event of the evening — the presentation of Varsity letter winners by. Coach Millard P. Robinson . and the award of silver footballs to them. There is ample parking in the rear of tHe Church buUding. Nason Resigns from Swarthmore College 12 Years Prexy Accepts Presidency of Foreign Policy Ass'n The resignation of John W. Nason as president of Swarthmore College to become president of the Foreign Policy Association was announced jointly yesterday by the Swarthmore College Board of. Managers and the Board of Directors of the Foreign Policy Association. Dr. Nason will remain at his SWarthmore post in a part-time capacity until June while learning his new duties with the. FPA» In announcing Dr. Nason's elecr tion to the presidency o*. the Foreign Policy. Association, Eustace Seligman,. chairman of the FPA Board of Directors, stated, in New York yesterday tnat the Associa^ tion's program for the development of community organizations devoted to the. extensive education in world affair* will be rapidly eje* panded under the new president, This will be possible under a substantial grant recently received from the Ford Foundation's Fund for Adult Education, which has undertaken a nation-wide program of community World Affairs Councils, forums and committees similar to those already active throughout the country. Dr. Nason has been president of Swarthmore* College since 1940 when he was picked from the ranks of the College's philosophy department to succeed Dr. Frank Aydelotte, who had resigned to head the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton. During his 12 years tenure Dr. Nason piloted SwarthmOre through the difficult years of World War II and the continuing period of adjustment since that time. Under him the College i successfully launched a building and fund raising program, subjected the curriculum for freshmen and sophomores to a thorough revision in line with the now famous Harvard Report on i Higher Education, and increased the endowment of the College from nine to 13 million dollars. Since his inauguration Dr. Nason has been increasingly active (Continued orr Page 7) Garden Dept. Presents Mrs. Anne W. Wood Women's Stated Meeting At 2 P.M. Tuesday Will Precede Program The Woman's Club of Swarthmore will hold a stated meeting and tea on December 9 at 2 p.m. The garden department will present Mrs. Anne Wertsner Wood, who will speak on "Make Your Own Merry Christmas", and will demonstrate the making of Christmas decorations. / Mrs. Wood is the wife of Harry Wood, superintendent of building and grounds at Swarthmore College, who has recently been awarded a silver medal by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for his work in horticulture. Mrs. Wood is the author of a book, now in its seventh printing entitled "Make Your Own Merry Christmas." She has travelled widely in Europe and this country and has lectured before many clubs. The "Ladies Home Journal", many other women's magazines, newspapers, and garden magazines have published her articles. She is often heard on radio programs. Mrs. Wood has long been active in the work of the Penn- . sylvania Horticultural Society. At the tea following the meeting Mrs. Ross W. Marriott and Florence J. Lucasse will pour.* Alice E. 'Child's Play' at Little Theatre December 5,6 The Little Theater Club of Swarthmore College will present a new play entitled "Child's Play", written by Florence Stevenson, tonight and tomorrow night at 8:15 in Clothier Memorial. This is the first of the group's two annual performances. "Child's Play" is set in Salem, Mass., in the year 1692. The action centers around a family which becomes involved in the infamous witch trials through the machinations of Faith Weir, a domineering, mother who forces her son, Johnathan, to enter the ministry. He, however, meets and falls in love with a Spanish Catholic, Oriana, and decides to give up. the ministry to seek a fortune as a merchant. His mother and Johnathan's cousin, Silence, who loves him, and whom his mother wishes him to marry, devise a scheme to rid themselves of Oriana by having her accused of witchcraft. The meeting will concern a test problem to be worked out for individual divisions. SEVENTH YEAR ALL AMERICAN PLAYER Alice Putnam Willetts of Lafayette avenue was selected as left half back on the United States Field Hockey Team at the four- day National Intersectional Women's Field Hockey Tournament held at Sweet Briar College, Sweet Briar, Va., from*November 27 to November 30.
