Testing,'testing and more testing. The Sewickley Valley .Hospital has been testing gold and other jewelry for radiation contamination for three weeks now, and so far results have been positive. Over 2,000 pieces of jewelry haye been scanned and according to Ken .Hum-prhies of the radiology department, none of the pieces tested was contaminated. As was expected, there were some radium dial watches that set Geiger counters beeping, but not to worry, a lead shield in the watch protects the wearer. The hospital initiated the testing in response to national concern about reports of radioactive jewelry. A Bradford County woman has filed a suit alleging the cancer that killed her husband was caused by radioactive gold used to enlarge his ring. The contaminated gold was used in the 1920 S, 1930 s and 1940 s in cancer treatment. Sipce, it has found its way into the jewelry manufacturing process. The first day of the screenings at the Sewickley Hospital brought 100 people with over 1,000 articles of jewelry to be examined. In the following two weeks, over 70 more people have come with another 1,000 pieces. Humphries said he applied -the average of coiitaminated pieces found in Pittsburgh and he should have found over 300 contaminated pieces. A recent screening by the Alleghney County Departme Department of Health uncovered nearly 20 contaminated pieces. Other cases have been reported as far away as Arkansas, Connecticut, Texas and Florida. The tests only take a few to minutes to complete. A Geiger counter registers the amount of radiation in a substance. A beep will sound if there is any present. While testing, Humphries reassures people when the counter beeps from routine radiation in the enviroment. If any piece is found, it would be put into a lead-lined container and sent the department of health for further study. The tests at the hospital are held every Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. and will continue indefinitely. acs
