Simpson To Serve Ken johns Named To On School Authority The appointment of John Rush Simpson, to serve on the Quaker Valley Joint School Authority was approved by the Quaker Valley School Board Monday night at its regular meeting. The Board also accepted the resignation of Theresa S. Schroth, Secondary English teacher, and approved the appointments of substitute teachers. Mr. Simpson, of Charette Place, Sewickley, was appointed to the School Authority to fill the space left vacant by Albert Rielil. His term will end January 1, 1974. Mr. Simpson is employed by Hegner Office Supply, Sewickley." . The Bqard also approved a motion to increase fire coverage under the school system’s Blanket ;Fire and Liability Insurance. The $109,300 increased coverage will mean an additional $751 in premiums. Other business' transacted by the Board included its approval of a plan to lease a classroom at Sewickley Elementary School to the Allegheny County School Board for an exceptional c h i 1-dren’s program. Bills passed by the Board included general expenses for July, August, and Sept., general expenses for October, and cafeteria expenses and bills for the- same period. General expenses for the months of July, August and September! according to Business Manager Charles Staiger, were $428,457. October’s* bills amount to .$94,825 and October’s gross payroll was set by Mr. Staiger at $180,000. Cafeteria bills for. October, he said, total $13,343. This includes (Please turn to Page 13) Fill Council Vacancy Sewickley Borough Council has a new council member, Kenneth E. Johns Jr. was nominated and appointed, at the regular meeting of council on Monday, tofill the unexpired term, running' till Dee. 31, 1971, of Robert Angros who has resigned. Mr. Johns a native' of Sewickley resides at 315 Peebles St., He is a teacher of Physical Education and Coach of various athletic teams at the Senior High. School of the Quaker Valley School System. He has been • a Plans Announced For Halloween Celebration YMCA officials have announce ed that the 1969 Halloween Parade will move out promptly at 7 p.m. the night of October 31. Partici-' pants will assemble on Thorn Street between the Library and the Elementary School Buildings. The YMCA Leaders Club, the Hi-Y and Tri-HtY Clubs, and Kiwanis Club Members will help organize the parade by carrying signs which will designate the places ' everyone should take in the parade formation. The parade will follow its Usual ' route and terminate on Broad Street-between Gourley’s and Bell Telephone. Highlighting - this year’s parade as always, is the annual performance of Quaker Valley’s fine High School Marching Band. The VFW Majorettes had been scheduled to appear but due to some uniform difficulties, their appearance has ben cancelled. At the conclusion of the parade, bags of goodies will- be distributed by members of the Sewickley Valley Board of Trade. Awards •for best costumes will also be -presented at that time. Awards will be given to youngsters in theses age groups: Grades 1 and 2; grades 3 and 4; grades 5 and 6. There will also be ‘family’ awards in the hope that entire families will participate.- Police Chief Lee Jones has advised that “Trick or Treat” hours will be confined between the (Please turn to !Page 27) Services At St. Stephens For Dr. J. W Mitchell One of Sewiekley’s most prominent physicians. Dr. J. West Mitchell of Merriman Road, died Tuesday morning at the age of 76. A native of Charleroi, Dr. Mitchell was a graduate of Bethany College and the University of Pittsburgh. He had served as Electrocardi-ographer at St. Francis Hospital, and interned at St. Francis; he was a consultant and neurologist with the -U. S. Army, clinical director of Physiatric Institute (New York); he served on the Pittsburgh Board of Health, was on the staff of Children’s Hospital and University of Pittsburgh. He -was a member of the Pa. State Medical Society, American Diabetes Association, and American Medical Assn. He also served as president of the American 'Heart Association, American Rheumatism. Assn., and Phlebol-'ogy Society of America. He was .‘a member of .the Pitt Faculty Club, the Edgeworth Club and •University Club." • - ■ . (Please turn to Page 13) • K. E. Johns, Jr. member of the Cochran Hose Co. for 10 years,' and has served as a member of the Board , of Directors of the Sewickley YMCA for 3 years. Of the visitors present, Robert • Rohdy of 960 Beaver St. was the first to address council. He stated that he had returned home from a short trip to find that the Borough had erected in front of his house one of their new signs. He felt that'he should have been informed that a sign was to be erected and possibly he could have made some sort of recommendation. Prior to this new sign there were 2 telephone poles, a bus stop sign, and a speed sign in front of his home. He stated that he had ilo * objection to the sign but in its present location along his entry walk it makes his home ‘look somewhat like a hotel. Mr. Lord said that council was sympathetic to his problem and " that Mr. Guy would look into the matter. 1 Prior to the nomination of Mr. Johns to council, John Hess of 225 Frederick Ave., as Democratic Chairman of the Borough, ad-ressed council and asked that they consider the name of Francis Murphy as a replacement for Mr. Angros. He was informed at that' time of the pending action. Mr. Arthur Graflon of 604 Maple Lane, who in the past has appeared in council chambers to defend the Zoning Laws of the Borough, and who takes great pride in the fact that he was instrumental in helping to write the new laws, appeared before council to ask for a change in the law. Mr. Graflon’s specific request is for a change on his Own property from R2 to R6 so that he may construct a new apartment house in front of. his present residence. He read to council from a lenghthy prepared statement exactly what his plans for the property were. He also stated that he had made some plans and arranged some options for financing and that his time limit was almost up therefore speed was of a necessity. Courtcil accepted the prepared statement and the plans and after an executive session voted to remand the same to the Planning Commission for their recomend-ation. Frank - Yankello was at the meeting representing the Board of Trade and was informed that Council would grant one weekend of free parking for their sale as a trial program. If everything works out favorably, then, Council would give further consideration for future sales.
