Second Class Postage Wednesday, April 30, 1969 Ten Cents Delayed Board Meeting a Covers Routine Matters ; The Quaker Valley School District School Board which was to have met on Monday, April 19, met on Thursday, April 24 and covered routine matters only. The April 19 meeting date was changed due to illnesses and inability of some members to attend for business reasons. After approving the minutes of the previous month’s session, the Board heard a report on the Parkway West Area Vocational- Jim Wardrop Returns To Viet Action Wardrop missing in action? That jvas the question "that buzzed through many of the U, S. Army Special Forces Camps in the Corps 2 Area of South Vietnam. _ It had been true, James Ward-Top, son of Mr. and Mrs.-E. D. Wardrop, Pink House Road,. a war correspondent and combat photographer, had gone out on a routine patrol and not returned. The patrol came back after a skirmish with the Viet Cong which left one South Vietnamese soldier dead and two Americans wounded - and Wardrop missing. Other members of the patrol seemed to have confidence though. S. Sgt. R. Jonings of Orlando, Fla. said “He knows the woods. He’ll be Okay if that’s all he has to deal with”. Said Sgt. Bob Dennis Of Detroit, “When lye made contact, ‘Major Jim’ was right there in the middle of it with his camera moving all around. I last saw him going out to our aright flank. I guess he’s trying for a picture of the whole thing”. “The ‘Major’ has to be back”, said Sgt. Bill Turne of New York. (Wardrop, as all war correspondents, was .'given the assimilated rank of ‘major’ upon entering Vietnam in 1968.') The Team Sergeant? Les Williamson of Los Angeles, said, “It’s bad when you. lose a civilian, very bad. We hope he’ll be (Please turn to page 22) Technical School by Mr. Iwler. Mr. Iwler revealed that, among other things, the Parkway School property would soon receive a complete new landscaping.' • It was agreed to issue a high school diploma to Richard Mc-Cready, Jr. who, until just recently, has been in the military service. McCready has passed the necessary testing for such consideration, with the testing done while he was in the service. Approval was given to the . Quaker Valley Band and Chorus to perform at the Three Rivers Arts Festival on June 19 and at the Lfeet Township Centennial celebration on June 21. The Band will also take part in the Leetsdale July 4 Parade. It has already been scheduled to appear in Sewickley on Memorial Day. Resignations were accepted with regret and appreciation for past services from Mrs. Ann (Veshio) Matteis, elementary librarian; Mrs. Ruth Sebolt, secondary English teacher and Mrs. Eleanor Rowlands, elementary art teacher. Mrs. Matteis, an 11-year employe, is leaving because ’ her husband will be employed away from this area. Mrs. Sebolt has taught here for a period of 7 years and Mrs. Rowlands who k is retiring, has taught here '8 years and has a total' of 24 years of teaching service to her credit Mrs._ Anne Kusnirak has been hired as a clerk-secretary in the Edgeworth Elementary Building- Several substitute teachers have been approved for service, as needed, in the school district. They are: Robert Moulton, .history; Mary Lewis, home e c o-nomics and Charles Phipps, mathematics. Mario PelusO, Distributive Education . instructor, attended the S.tate Leadership Conference in Distributive Education in Harrisburg held- last March 23-25. Miss Betty Rea, cafeteria manager will attend the Annual Conference of Pa. The names of Robert Lee Murrer and W. Ralph Green 'Will appear on the May 20 Republican primary ballot. Murrer now represents Region One and Green represents Region Three, Region One is made up of Bell Acres, Leetsdale and Leet 'township where Frederick Sheetz III'' of 161 Pilgrim Drive, will be seeking the Democratic nomination. Both Murrer b6 unopposed, and ■ Sheetz will ‘ Sewickley Borough which constitutes Region Two will have the name of William D. Decourcy of 903 Centennial Av6nue on the Republican ballot. No Democrat is listed for Region Two, Region Three, made up of Edgeworth, Glenfieldi Haysville, Osborne, Sewickley Heights, Sewickley Hills and Aleppo Township, the Republican ballot will carry the name of J. W. Kriever of 305 Highland Avenue along with’ that of Mr, Green. Only one will be elected. No Democratic candidate is listed fors Region Three, All candidates will be seeking 6-year terms at the General Election in November. Meeting Cancelled District Attorney Robert Duggan will not be able to address a meeting at the Edgeworth Club scheduled for the evening of Thursday, May 8 due to commitments in Washington, D.C, Mrs. Linden Berkheimer, President of the Sewickley Valley Council of Republican Women''which sponsors of the event, says that her organization is rescheduling the meeting for next Fall, Jim Roolf To Play In August "Big 33" Game Jim Roolf, stellar lineman on the Quaker Valley football team for the past three seasons, has been named to the West squad for the 'annual "Big 33” game to be played in Hershey on August 9. He was one of the 30 players named to the squad. Roolf, who is slated to enter Notre Dame in the fall, will play an end position, "Car Wash" Set For May TO ' The M.Y.F. of the Sewickley Methodist Church will hold a car wash on the church parking lot on Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Flag Displays Requested By Parade Officials For the second time, the Loyalty Day parade will be an early evening >affair and will move up from its starting point at Broad St. and the Boulevard promptly at 7 p.m. The procession to be led by the Sewickley Police, will move to Thorn Street, then west on Thorn to Grant,* then north to Beaver, then east to Peebles, then south on Peebles to Thorn, then west on Thorn to Broad St., where it will disband. Chief of Police Lee Jones has requested that motorists refrain from parking along the parade route. Barricades will be put up at many intersections at 6:30 and removed immediately following the parade. Streets and intersections along the parade route will be manned by police.- Julio Sauro, chairman of the Parade Committee, has announced that this year’s parade will be “longer and better” than the one in 1968 which met with unanimous approval from all those who witnessed it. Several brand new marching units and bands have been added for the 1969 edition. Mr. Sauro is asking that merchants and residents display their American Flags all day on May 3, and to keep them flying until the Loyalty Day parade comes to an end. Mr.- Sauro’s committee is also asking those who wish to make a donation toward this yearly display to send their checks to the Sewickley V.F.W. Post, 529% Beaver _ Street, Sewickley, Pa. 15143, in care of the “Loyalty Day Parade Committee.” Bill Quinn In Hospital Sewickley Kiwanis President and newsdealer Bill Quinn is in Sewickley Valley Hospital following a heart attack which occurred last Saturday. Latest reports are that he will be in the hospital about 3 weeks and at home for several weeks.
