Removal of famous Sewiekley landmark will be completed this week. Demolition Of Old St. James Under Way On January 6, 1969, the Martin Wise Construction Company of Sewiekley began the demolition of the former Saint Jame^ Church Building at 336 Walnut Street. The work is expected to be completed by the end of this week. The building was in use for approximately 99 years. Father Dominic Zwickert was the resident pastor of Saint James when the cornerstone was laid on June 4, 1868. However, on May 12, 1869, tlie heavy roof caved in and the walls collapsed. Work began anew and on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1870, the Church was dedicated. Since then the building served the members of Saint JameS Parish until July 25, 1968. The last service was a doncele-brated Mass on the Feast of Saint Jame3, July 25, 1965. Clergy, members and friends marched in procession after the Mass to the new Church at 200 Walnut Street* Here To Discuss Social Security Mr. A1 Lawrence of the Social Security Administration will appear at the Sewiekley American Legion Post 4/ 246 Broad Street, Sewiekley, tomorrow evening, Jan. 16, at 9 p.m. Following a talk and movie, Mr. Lawrence will conduct a question and answer period regarding recent changes in the program. Mr- Bud Merriman, Adjutant of the local Legion Post, informs that the meeting will be open to the public. Edgeworth Borough Council in an organization meeting piior to the opening of the regular council meeting re-elected Newton Chapin Jr- to serve as President for 1969. All incumbents for the other offices within the borough were also re-elected for the new year. The Mellon National Bank and Trust Company office in Sewick- Leetsdale Gives Raise To Workers Leetsdale Borough Council at its regular meeting on Wednesday. Jan. 8, 1969, approved a motion to grant pay raises to the Borough’s street employees. The street commissioner is to receive a 10% increase and will be paid time and a half for overtime. The other members of his work force will receive 7% increases and will continue to be compensated at time and a half for overtime. All pay raises are to be retroactive to Jan. 1, 1969. A report on the Industrial Redevelopment Project indicated that the plans are presently in the hands of the Allegheny County Planning Commission for its consideration and recommendations. The Planning Commission is expected to pass its findings on to the County Commissioners sometime this month. ' Mr. Joseph Palmer was re-. appointed to the Borough Planning Commission for a new five year term. The balance of the meeting was -spent in handling routine administrative matters. In Sewiekley "Mothers March" Set For Sunday, Jan. 26 Last Day To Fife Estimated Tax Today, Jan. 15, Is the deadline for the final payment of 1968 estimated Federal income tax, according to H. Alan Lorjg, District Director of Internal Revenue* Payment of the last installment ’ or the filing of an original or - amended declaration otherwise ® due, Jan. 15, 1969, is not required if ti)e taxpayer files his 1068 income tax return and pays in full pie balance of tax due by. March of Dimes Mothers March Co-Chairmen for Sewick-ley, Mrs. Eugene Gray and Mrs. Charles Merriman, h a v e announced that this year’s March will take place in Sewiekley on Sunday, January 26 from 1 until 5 p.m. The Mothers March is t h e highlight of.the National Foundation - March of Dimes Program which, on a national basis, is usually held January 30. However, each local chairman may select the date that is best for her particular locality and for those who work with her in the campaign, At the moment, the only immediate area that has definitely set its date is Sewiekley. As other Mothers March dates are made available for the Other boroughs and townships, they Will be carried by this newspaper. Chairmen for other Sewiekley Valley areas for the March of Dimes are: SEWICKLEY HEIGHTS - Mrs. William Brant III; SEWICKLEY HILLS - Mrs. Virgil Waite; ALEPPO TOWNSHIP - Mrs. Walter Carter; LEET TOWNSHIP - Mrs. Stephen Pierce; OSBORNE - Mrs. David Cotton; EDGEWORTH - Mrs. William Logsdon; GLENFIELD - Mr s. Francis Reich; LEETSDALE -Mrs, Jean Jones; HAYSVILLE -Mrs. Delmar Eppley; BELL ACRES - Mrs. Emory Cain. GENERAL CHAIRMAN for the entire Sewiekley Valley area is Mrs. Henry Frissell of Sewlck-ley. COIN COLLECTOR CHAIRMAN FOR SEWICKLEY is Mr. Walter Brannon. ’ ley was named depository for the Borough and Mr. Homer W. Fisher was elected to serve as Treasurer. The tax collector’s report of 1968 Borough Taxes collected during December was $2,482.13. This leaves the balance of uncollected taxes for 1968 at $3,158.58. Mr. Lunn stated that this was a good position for the borough to be in and that the major portion of uncollected-taxes would be collected. The Justice of the Peace report from Mr. Paul Guilot indicated that finest totalling $50.00 were turned in during the month of December. The Police report listed two accidents, this was five less than last December. One of the accidents was caused as a result of a driver falling asleep at the wheel and crossing the road and hitting another car head bn. Fortunately there were no injuries. There were 39 services rendered and 7 speeding arrests. - The dog control officer was called to the borough 7 times during the month and 8 dogs were picked up. Seven were claimed by. their owners and one was an unlicensed stray. Two resolutions were passed by council as follows: RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Orin E. AlexatV der, Jr., was appointed Patrolman of this Borough on Juno 1st, 1936 and promoted to Lieutenant in 1950 and was promoted to Chief of the force on January 31, 1954 and served as Chief for eleven years, until April 29th, 1965, and upon his retirement December 31st, 1968 has served the , Borough for thirty-t w 0 years; and WHEREAS, he has faithfully . (Please turn to Page 18) Osborne Council Postpones Meeting The regular monthly meeting of the Osborne Council which was scheduled for Thursday Jan. 9 has been postponed until Thursday, January 16 becanse of illness, there were not enough members present last week to constitute a forum.
