Jim Oliver, better known to out-of-towners as Commander James H. Oliver of the United States Navy, was joined in California by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, and sister and brother-in-law. The family was on hand for a change-of-command ceremony in which Jim assumed command of VA-147. That’s a U.S. Navy attack squadron stationed at NAS Lemoore, Calif. “Jim still considers himself a Sewickley native and has maintained his legal residence here,” brother Johnny Oliver, better known as Sewickley Heights Councilman John C. Oliver III, told, the Herald before leaving for the West Coast. Herald Officer Manager Gizella K. Mato quickly attested to Commander Oliver’s hometown loyalties, noting how she has followed his naval career through the years as a result of the . changes of address requested on his subscription as he moved from place to place. But no matter where he roamed, he never gave up his thirst for hometown doings. Jim’s and Johnny’s parents, Mayor and Mrs. John C. Oliver Jr. of Edgeworth,-attended the ceremonies as well as their sister, Peggy Oliver Stan-dish, and her husband, Judge William L. Standish. Commander Oliver was graduated from Trinity College and recfeived his commission through the AVROC program in August, 1967. In January 1969, he reported to VA-174 at NAS Cecil Field for training in the A-7B. He then joined the Silver Foxes of VA-155 and made two combat cruises aboard the USS Oriskany. After returning from Vietnam, he again went to VA-174, this time as an instructor pilot in A-75, B, C, and E models. In August’ 1974, Commander Oliver joined VA-15 as the maintenance officer, During his tour there, he*made a cruise on the USS Roosevelt and another on the USS America. He was then ordered to Commander Naval Military Personnel Command, Washington, D.C., as the placement of- ficer for overseas air stations as the recruiting officer. After refresher training in the A-7E with VA-122, Naval Air Station Lemoore, California, he returned to sea duty as the operations officer for Carrier Air Wing Eleven, where he made cruises aboard the USS America and the USS Enterprise. In May 1982, Commander Oliver reported to OP-13 in Washington D.C. as the enlisted community manager for avionics ratings, a billet he held for 15 months. Following A-7E refresher training with VA-122, Commander Oliver reported to the Argonauts of VA-147 as the executive officer in January, 1984. That same month, the squadron deployed as part of Carrier Air Wing TWO aboard USS Kitty Hawk. Commander Oliver’s decorations include 13 Strike/Flight air medals, Navy commendation (with Combat “V”), Navy Achievement Medal, and various other unit and service awards.
