No, it’s not the Liberty Bell but not all historic bells are in Philadelphia. The one above once marked time for Pittsburghers and summoned firemen to burning buildings back in the 19th century. It was mounted in a derrick above a building in Market Square. Mary Beth Pastorius, vice president of the Sewickley Valley Historical Society, takes her turn ringing the bell by striking it with a mallet. The bell has no clapper. Local historians learned more about their subject on a recent visit to headquarters of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania recently. See Pages 6 and 7. (Rhoto by B Q Shje|ds) Salute to America July 4 A community Fourth of July parade in Leetsdaie, an evening concert in Edgeworth’s Way Park, and a fireworks extravaganza to light up the night sky will be the highlights of this year’s Independence Day celebration in Sewickley Valley. The Fourth of July parade gets marching at 2 p.m. this Thursday. The marchers will proceed down Beaver Street from their formation point, Quaker Village Shopping Center, and will disband at Edward C. Henle Park. Leetsdaie Mayor Robert Mercer is general chairman for this year’s events, and Larry Kroner is parade chairman. Mayor Mercer and police cars and mayors from other communities will lead the parade. Next, the sounds of the Quaker Valley High School Marching Band will follow up the cars of dignitaries. Veterans of Foreign Wars colors from Leetsdaie, Sewickley, Glenfield and Coraopoiis wiii add some pomp and circumstance to the event. Others scheduled to march: •George Washington Carver Band. •Syria Temple Motor Corps. •White Heather Pipe and Drum Band. •McKeesport Drill Team Drum and Bugle Corps. •Holiday Drum and Baton Corps. •Stars and Stripes Marching Corps. •Golden Triangles Drum and Majorette Corps. •Syria Temple Clowns. •Bentleyville Firemen’s Band. . ^District Justice James E. Russo.. •Leetsdaie Scouts, Fire departments from the River Valley Firemen’s Association will also participate. Owners of antique cars will be driving their vehicles in the parade. In conjunction with the Fourth of July holiday, the Leetsdaie Fire Department lsa@S#t 3IE»BCE=3Ea!33 will be holding its annual carnival in the park. Hours will be 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily except on the Fourth, when the carnival will open at noon and close at 11 p.m. The Fireworks Extravaganza, by Zambelli’s of of New Castle, begins at 10 p.m. In case of rain, the pyrotechnical display will be held on July 6 instead. Leetsdaie Councilman Charles Wasco is in charge of this year’s fireworks activity. Before all the fireworks, however, Sweetwater Art Center will sponsor something a little more relaxing as well as more euphonic. A free community band concert Will be held in Way Park from 5-6 p.m. The M.P.I Band will provide patriotic fare from Sousa and other American ’ composers.
