Heralb SERVING THE ELEVEN BOROUGHS AND TOWNSHIPS OF THE QUAKER VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT Vol. 70 No. 2 Paid At Sewfckiey# Pa, Second Class Postage Wednesday, January 8. 1949 Ten Dents Central Blood Bank Unit Here Sunday William O’Donovan, chairman of the Sewiekley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Blood Bank -has announced that the mobile unit" of the Pittsburgh Central Blood Bank will be in Sewiekley next Sunday, Jan. 12, from noon until 8 p.m. The 8-man team and all their equipment will be set up in the VFW Home at 529 Beaver Street to accept blood donations from persons 21 or older and from persons between 18 and 21 with permission from their parents. - Mr. O’Donovan Stressed that, the blood donated here 'may be designated for use as each donor wishes. He is, hopeful that at least 200 people will participate in the one-day program. Blood may also be given in the name of organizations, if desired. In fact, several groups have already planned to participate on that basis. It has been stated that persons suffering from colds, or recuperating from1 the flu, should not attempt to offer blood. All persons eligible to donate blood should eat normally on Sunday except that fatty foods should be avoided. 1 Mr. O’Donovan jiiakes it clear that Wood will be accepted only from those fully suited to make donations and that every medical precaution will be taken to insure the comfort and well-being 'of donors. Q. V.-- AF.S. Holds First Rehearsa! The Quaker Valley Chapter of the American Field Service held its initial rehearsal last Sunday a f t er n o o ri at the senior high school in preparation for its annual production. Proceeds from the show are used tb cover expenses of sponsorship of student foreign exchange. A student from a foreign country attends Quaker Valley for a year and a Q.V. student attends a school abroad for a summer session. The show has grown over past years into a community affair. Faculty, alumni, and townspeople, make' up the cast, crews, and, committees. Showtime this year for ONCE UPON A SONG will be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, March 6, 7, and 8 at 8:00 p.m. in the senior high'school auditorium. Store And . Postal Unit Burglarized Mike’s Cash Market, located on Big Sewiekley Creek Road in Bell Acres Borough, was broken into early Sunday morning and. thieves reportedly made off with several hundred dollars worth of cigarettes and a small amount of postage stamps from the Post Office Unit located in the store. According to reliable sources, local police and U. S. Postal authorities are investigating the matter. Nursing Alumni To Meet Jan. 14 January 14 is the date set for the regular monthly meeting and dinner of the Sewiekley Valley Hospital School of Nursing Alum-* ni Association. Members Will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the nurses’ residence and reservations for the dinner are to be made. Hostess for the evening will be C. Micklaucic and the pro* gram “will be “Adjustments to Daily Living with, the H a n d i- Damages To Parked Cars Real Problem Local Scout Collects Books For Veterans Life Scout Joseph Kumer of Troop 243 Edgeworth, Pa., has spent the last eight weeks collecting paper back novels for the veterans’ in the local veterans hospitals at Aspinwall and Oakland. . As a service project for the rank of Eagle Scout, Joseph planned to Collect one thousand (1000) paper back books for veterans. With the help of the Scouts of Troop 243, Joseph collected a total of fourteen hundred books that were turned over to the hospitals. In the planning of his service project, Joseph had hand bills printed and passed out to the residents of Edgeworth, Sewiekley, and Leetsdale. Then • the boys went out and collected the books when they were. called. Joseph is currently serving as an instructor in Troop 243 and has served as a Patrol- Leader for over a year. He wishes at this time to thank all the people who Helped to make his project a success and also the boys who worked with him. John Barr Joins National Press Photographers Assn. To Further Studies Upon Graduation John Thomas Barr, a senior at Sewiekley Academy, h?s been honored by acceptance into the National Press Photographers Association. Word of his. acceptance was received by him on Dec. 31, 1968. His membership entitles him to all the regular privileges of the organization. John is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Barr of 319 Frederick Avenue, Sewiekley and he ex-‘ pects to‘ attend one of the country’s leading professional photography institutes upon graduation from the Academy. John’s photographic career is already well under the way in that he has done considerable free lance work for the Child Health Association, Sewiekley Valley Hospital, Quaker Valley School District and for the Sew-ickley Herald. Much of his work appears in the Academy Yearbook and in the Seventh Pillar, the Academy’s monthly news-’ paper. John Thomas Barr The Vogan Studio Dr. Paviis Local Men To Speak At Elected By St. James Boros Assn. SVH Receives Continued Accreditation • In December, 1968, the Sewick-ley Valley Hospital School of Nursing received notice from the National League for Nursing, Inc. that their school program has received continued accreditation. A revisit is scheduled for 1973. The Sewiekley Valley Hospital School of Nursing will continue , to appear on the official lists of institutions offering National League for Nursing - accredited diploma programs in nursing published in NURSING OUTLOOK, The members of the Board of Review commended the faculty for contining to satisfy the current evaluative criteria and for their active participation as nurse educators who have committed themselves to the improvement of diploma education for nursing irt- general and to the continued self-study and self-evalilatiotl of their own diploma program in particular. . * The January meeting of the St. James Guild and Christian Mothers will be held tomorrow, January 9, at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium. Following the business meeting Dr- Robert J. Paviis, M.D., will present slides oh Glaucoma, “The Thief in the Night”, which robs your sight unknowingly without symptoms. Dr. Paviis will discuss the detection, treatment and outlook for persons afflicted with Glaucoma that have received proper medical attention. A question and answer period will follow- Dr. Paviis of Oliver Rd., Edge-worth, is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and interned at St. Francis General Hospital. He has practiced ophthalmology for 4 years in Sewiekley and is on the staff of Sewiekley Valley Hospital and consultant staff of the Eye and Ear Hospital of Pittsburgh and Falk Clinic. To conclude the evening refreshments will be served. Everyone^**’welcome* ■ » • <«■ The Sewiekley Police, in thei last few days, have been receiving numerous complaints from motorists reporting that their parked cars have been damaged and that the persons causing the damages have not reported the incidents to the owners of the cats involved, the police or their respective insurance companies. Chief Jones says the matter is a most serious one. not only because innocent people are having their personal property damaged, but that the drivers of cars responsible for the damages are in direct violation of the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code. Complaints of cars being damaged in parking lots has been most prevalent these past several weeks and extra precautions are being taksn by the police to apprehend anyone guilty of this violation. It is the responsibility of law-abiding citizens to report incidents of this nature to the police so that owners of all vehicles can feel safe to park their cars without fear of finding them damaged by unknown persons. It is a misdemeanor to cause damage to any vehicle or to leave the scene of an‘accident.. Penalty for such offenses includes loss of driver’s license. Avalon Councilman, Ralph F. Hughes, has been elected President of the Allegheny County Boroughs Association to succeed John L. McManus. Mr. Hughes, who had been the 1st Vice President of the Boroughs Association for the past year, will be installed at the 20th annual banquet of the County Boroughs Association on January 17 at the Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel. Elected as fellow officers were 1st Vice President, Frank A. Witt of Monroeville. 2nd Vice President, William W. Knight of Munhall and 3rd Vice President, C. Fred Guy of Sewicldey. Edward N. Weaver of Avalon was re-elected as Treasurer., Dr. Joseph A. James of the Institute of Local Government of the University , of Pittsburgh serves as the Corresponding Secretary. Taliaferro, will speak to the Child Health Association, Friday, Jan. 10 at 10:30 a.m. A former teacher -in general education at the Westinghouse Learning Corporation and an instructor in special education at Wilkinsburg Senior High School, Mr. Taliaferro will explain how NEED recruits high school students who would benefit from a college education, contacts the institutions of higher learning to secure student aid and attempts to raise funds from corporate and individual sources.
