Wishing You Joy And Peace At Christmas . . . . eimrfclep J^eralb SERVING THE ELEVEN BOROUGHS AND TOWNSH IPS OF THE QUAKER VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT Vol, 69 No. 50 Paid At Sewickley, Pa, Second Class P&stage Wednesday, December 18, 1968 Ten Cents New Parking Meters To Be Installed Soon Passes By 4 To 3 Vote SewicWey Borough Council met on Monday, December 16, and with no visitors present to be heard, had a rather short and routine, meeting. One item o£ major importance was the awarding of the bid for the purchase of new parking meters. The successful bidder was Rockwell with a low bid Of $66.00 per. meter, a trade allowance of . $18.00 for the old meter leaving a net price of $48.00 per meter. Council authorized the purchase of 350 plus meters with Rockwell to supervise the installation. Installation of the new meters, will begin immediately / and will be -completed in a period of 30 to 60 days. The' 1969 budget and also the tax increase as reported last month, were both passed, Mr. W. C- Cooper, who has served on the Water Works Commission for ,a number of years was reappointed to a new five year term. A special meeting has been set for Jan. 7, 1969 at 7:30 p.m, A ■member of the Allegheny County Planning'Commission will be in attendance at this meeting and will explain what help is available from the county in any future plans the borouglrmay embark on. . With all regular business being .concluded, council adjourned to executive session. Leetsdale Going Ahead With Development Plan Quaker Valley One Of Six Area Schools To Join Intercultural Program The Quaker Valley District School Board, at its meeting on Monday night, passed a resolution asking the Allegheny County Board of School Directors to'include, the local school district in a program for Developing Intercultural Understanding. The Allegheny Board has already requested funds.under the Elemen- -tary and Secondary Education Act, Title III for this purpose. The program here will be part of a cooperative effort with the school districts of Avalon, Babcock, Churchill, Fox Chapel and North Allegheny. The local board has agreed to assume the cost or duplication and distribution of printed an4 non-printed materials to be utilized by this school district. The Alleghey County School District has been authorized to represent the six school districts mentioned here with - regarding this project. %- According to Dr. G. V. Bedison, supervising principal for Quaker Valley Schools, about 50% of. the students will come under the program. ‘ . Future studies of the program are already planned to evaluate its contribution to the curriculum. Substitute Teachers Hired Ludmila Reed and Sharon Bar-reca have been employed as substitute teachers for the current school term.. They- will teach in the elementary and secondary schools respectively. ■ Thomas G. Petey-of Jefferson Hills, has been -employed as a Reading and English teacher in the Junior High School. Mr. Petey will, replace Mrs. Diane Schramm. will terminate her contract next fall. \ (Please Turn to Page 32) Bell Acres Adopts Final 1969 Budget 1 By a' vote of 6 to 1, Council .of the Borough of Bell Acres, at their regular meeting held .Monday ■ evening, December 9, •1968. adopted the final budget for the year 1969. Robert K. Condit was the. sole dissenter. An irtci'ease in the total assessed - valuation of real estate in the borough netted an additional revenue in real estate taxes for the coming year in the amount of approximately $1500.00 over the amount estimated in the proposed budget submitted at- the November meeting of council. This additional revenue was allocated towards reduction of a loan with the Mellon National Bank & Trust Co. which,was negotiated for the purchase of land adjacent to the fire hall. In the final budget debt service expenditures in the amount of $2500.00 will reduce said loan to approximately $800.00 at the,end of the year. No other changes were made by the Budget & Finance Committee. , Other matters taken up by council at said meeting was the approval of the purchase of a new police car. Bids for a 1969 American made car to be used as a police car will be advertised and opened at the next meeting of council to be held January 13, 1969. MR. AND MRS,. SANTA CLAUS made a surprise & gift from Santa. The jolly mart’s visit was ar-viait to the Sewickley Valley Hospital on Friday, ranged by the PHi Delta Mu fraternity of Robert December 13 to distribute a little Happiness to the Mortis Junior College. Others, who had come to the session were unable to" get into the council chamber and had to remain in* the hall and on the stairway. Tire meeting opened with the reading of the minutes of the regular meeting of Nov. 13 and the special meeting that the majority of the spectators w e r e \ most interested in. After the minutes had been ' studied and approved by council, Dr. Gaydos called for questions from spectators. The first to speak was Mr. Ben Green, and he was interested in knowing why none of the comments of the public were included in the minutes of the Nov. 25 meeting. He was told that a tape recording had been made of the meeting and that it was being retained as a permanent record. Mr. Mike Bajsec questioned whether the study was up to date since the maps used were dated 1907. He also asked about the cost of the study.1 _ * He was informed by council that the cost of the proposal at-this point was $3764.87. Mr. Berman of the engineering firm explained that the proposal at this point was dealing with • the entire parcel of land involved and not with specific properties. Therefore, it was more economical to use existing maps. Mrs. Mattzie asked why the borough didn’t just retain ownership to the vacant properties for its own use in future years. Dr, Gaykos stated that the entire development program was under study for the purpose of turning unproductive property -into taxable income for the borough, Mr. McQiiaide asked if Mayor Henle would voice his opinion regarding the development. Mayor Henle stated that fid was in favor of the development He stated that a low rent housing (Please turn to Page 32) Christmas Fund Reminder The Herald Office is? again handling the monies or checks ■made out to Sewickley Borough for the annual Sewickley Municipal Employee and Police Christmas Funds. Schools To Keep Check on Absenteeism v, The Hong Kong variety of th# Asian Flu which is spreading rapidly throughout the country and officially reported to have hit Allegheny County by the County Health Department, has. as yet, not affected this area* Dr., G. V. Bedison, superintendent of Quaker Valley Schools, says that the schools here are experiencing a normal amount of absenteeism and that his staff started Monday morning to make frequent checks with each school in the district to keep abreast of the situation. These checks have been prompted by the. experience in other school districts and will continue as long as the situation warrants.
