r* W Itemlfc Pear no man, and do justice to all men." Vol. V SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1907 No. 12 . E. Church Anniversary. Sunday last was a day not to be forgotten by any of the hundreds who were present at the anniversary services at the. Methodist Episcopal church. The seventieth year of this sanctuary's organization and the fiftieth year of its incorporation, were duly observed., The church was filled at each service. At 10- o'clock the morning services began with the Rev. Dr. H. L. Ghapman, of Uniontown, in charge. The front pews were occupied by veteran members, all who had been such for SO years or more. Among these were Mrs. G. F. Rudisill, who' has been a member for 65 years, having joined in 1842. To bring this venerable woman to the church she had her first automobile ride, thanks to James S. Gray and his committee of transportation with autos and carriages. Despite special speed on Thorn street, Mrs. Rudisill hugely enjoyed the trip and did not seem a bit frightened. Among those present were Ghief of Police Roach and his officers. Mr. Venning gave an interesting outline of church meetings, and Rev. Ghapman spoke of class meetings of old timers, and of old times, very eloquently. Mr. J. A. Huston, president of the board of trustees, gave a masterly address on church matters. It appealed to parents as well as young people. He expressed the hope that the next thirty years of the church would be better than the past thirty, good as the latter had been. The music accompanying these services was admirable, particularly the singing by the Men's Glub chorus, led by Mr. J. P. McDonald. The solo by Mrs. J. Sharpe McDonald, despite the (Continued on page 7.) EVANGELIST REV. J. D. TAYLOR. Evangelistic Services at the Baptist Church. The pulpit will be occupied tomorrow morning and evening by Rev. J. D. Taylor. "The Sailor Evangelist." Mr. Taylor is an ordained Baptist minister, and has been in evangelist work for ten years. He is an old sailor, having worked his way up from cabin boy to master and owner of his own ship. About ten years ago he became convinced that the Lord wanted him for a special work, and he sold out his vessel to enter the work he has since been engaged in. Rev. Taylor has had a wonderful experience and uses as illustrations his own experinces in different parts of the world, having been more than 20 times to Europe and four times across the equator.. Rev. Taylor will be here for a couple of weeks and will hold services in the Baptist church at 7.45 o'clock each evening. It is.hoped that the members of the church will be out in full force on Sunday morning. Rev. E. M. Wilson, pastor of the Immauel Baptist church, Elgin, 111., in an article to the News of Evage- list Taylor, says: "That he is a man of attractive physique and of stirring personality and possesses the natural temperament and qualifications of an evangelist. He is a chain-lightning talker and presents the Gospel message with the enthusiasm of a politician, the conviction of a preacher and the power of expression of a skilled impersonator. The personal intensity with which he delivers the gospel; truth is well qualified to engender and awaken religious zeal and activity." Second Baptist church, Macon, Ga.; "Evangelist J. Dimick Taylor, of Irene, 111., has been laboring with us for the past four 'weeks, and we deem it a, pleasure to say to those who are interested in the Master's work that we have never received such bleseings as we have under his preaching. Sixty-two have been added to the church, and our members have been revived as we have never seen them before, and we very much regret we cannot keep him with us longer. While he has a warm place in our hearts, we bid him God-speed and pray the richest blessing of the Master on him as he goes into other fields. Done by order of the church in conference this 20th day of February, 1907. ''G. Y. Wright, Moderator. "L. G. GRANtfORD, Ghurch Glerk." Firemen's Reception. Edgeworth Hose Company Number One Entertains Members of Sewichiey and Leetsdale Departments. ENTHUSIASTIC GATHERING On Tuesday evening the Edge- worth Hose Gompany. No. One, entertained the members of the Leetsdale and Sewickley fire departments, at its hose house, in an enjoyable manner. The reception was given for the purpose of bringing the volunteer fire companies of the Valley together that they might be benefitted by the exchange of views on methods best suited to suburban companies in fighting fires. Those in charge of this meeting were not disappointed, as a large number of men representing Leetsdale and Sewickley were present, and not a few good points of interest were brought out in the impromptu talks given by firemen present. Gouncilman William Wardrop opened the meeting by introducing Mr. A. O. Pearce, president of the Edgeworth Hose company, who then took the chair and presided, after making a few appropriate remarks explaining why it was desirous to have the firemen of the Valley become better acquainted. At the request of Mr. Pearce, several of the firemen responded and made remarks suited to the occasion. , The meeting was one of inspiration, and the hosts are to be congratulated on taking the initiatory in this matter. Other meetings like it are sure to follow. The personel of this meeting was such that the citizens of the boroughs represented may well feel proud that such men take an active part in the fire department. ■ Refreshments were also served by the committee in charge, and the meeting was in every sense a success. . _y-)l**im.
