Instead of seeking her third term as a member of borough council, she has filed a petition for the office of mayor. If elected, she would be the borough’s first woman mayor. Running for mayor is a decision Mrs. Guy has been considering for three years. “This is k ladder deal—one step at a time,” she said. “In my opinion, this is my next step as a politician. I wanted the experience on council first, though. I think I’ve gotten that. “There’s only so much I’m permitted to do as a member of council. I guess I’m having growing pains. I want to do more. I want to be involved more and more in what’s going on in Sewickley. Sometimes I think a person can stagnate by being involved with the same things every day. I think I’ve earned my right to do something different.” Mrs. Guy has been a member of coun--cil for the past eight years, a period of time in which she was able to “learn the ins and outs of government dealings.” “Being on council that long will make me a better mayor,” she added. Being a woman seeking office has its advantages as well. “I believe it helps me being a woman,” she said. “I’m not one-sided, I’m always open for criticism and I’ve always had to investigate all my facts thoroughly before making a decision. A fella doesn’t necessarily have to do that. He can say something, and that’s it. “I have to have that extra edge. If someone asks me, I have to explain why black is black. People expect women to -have the answers to why this is this way. and that is that way.” And her top priority if she is successful in her bid to become mayor? “Anything I can do to make Sewickley better. That’s my goal,” she promised. Mrs. Guy said she doesn’t expect a whole lot of support from the Democratic party. “It’s not a strong party here,” she said. “If you do anything, you have to so it on your own. There really is no en- dorsement process.” Her eight years as a council member, have been years well spent, she said. “Helping people is what I’m most proud of,” Mrs. Guy figured. “That’s why I got involved in politics in the first place. I’ve made people aware of what’s happening. That’s the important thing.” Marie Guy’s decision to run for the of- • fice of mayor leaves her council seat vacant and gives Republicans an oppor- j tunity to recapture control of Ward 1. One candidate to file in Ward 1 is Aurelia M. Rich, a Republican former owner of Trader’s Jewelry Store. The Republicans hold a substantial registration edge in Sewickley’s three wards.
