Z^ft, 'ftetutit .< Pear no man, and do justice to all men." Vol. IV SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 1907 No. 19 ex- re- Council Meeting. The regular monthly meeting of Sewickley Borough Gouncil was ' held on Thursday evening last. Those present were Messrs. Straw, Brown, Diehl, Ghaplin and Paulson. Mr. RE. Alden was elected to succeed himself as a member of the Water Commission for a term of five years, his time having pired. Mr. G. G. Stucke was elected a member of the Board of Health for a term of five years to take effect on the expiration of his. present term. A resolution was read from the Board of Health recommending an ordinance compelling dairymen to have their cows tested for tuberculosis, before they be permitted to sell milk in our borough. This matter was laid over until a later meeting. The Finance Gommittee gave a very favorable report of the Borough's outlay during 1906.., It showed the expenses to have kept within the appropriations, a by no means usual state of affairs. Some investigation and repairs needed were reported by the Street Gommittee. The third and last reading of the ordinance providing for a $30,000 bond issue, for building the municipal structure, took place. This important measure will be voted upon on Tuesday, February 19. Gouncil having knowledge that opposition to the bond issue exists, on the score0that the tri-ennial assessments on property in • the borough has been raised for 1"90<T, and that, with the bond issue, taxes would be increased, desire particularly to make it plain to our citizens that though -the assessments have been raised, yet the appropriation needed for the borough expenses are ample, so with the new valuations, it' will follow that the millage may be reduced and yet the same amount raised without increasing taxation. _ The fact that the assessment is higher will-allow of a drop in the millage and permit the needed appropriations to be forthcoming. The report of Ghief of Police Roach was read; also a report from TEe Republican Suggestion Meeting Mr. Murray's name was presented at th^ suggestion meeting as a candidate for Councilman from the First ward. He is a successful business man with many fine qualities to recommend him to the voter as he is universally liked throughout the town and is not the choice of a few. Show your appreciation for a good man by attending the- primaries and voting for Mr. Murray. the committee appointed to investigate the natural gas problem. An opinion was read from Attorney Willis McGook, upon the subject. It was held by Gouncil that inasmuch as the protest against the gas concern originated from the consumers of this valley and borough, and was aided by the Sewickley Valley Business Men's Association, it was thought best to advise .the Association of what had been done in the matter, and if the Association so preferred, another public meeting .might be summoned, at which all opinions and all matter bearing on the gas outrages might be read to the people, and the question left in the hands of the consumers as to what action be taken. The Republican suggestion meeting, at which more than fifty good Republicans were present, at Gray's Hall on Thursday evening, was called to order by Mr. J. S. Gray, who read a recent decision by Judge Shafer as to election of borough officials and whether to proceed under the new or old elec- tion law. Mr. Gharles T. Woods was elected permanent chairman. As secretary, Mr. G. F. Muller was nominated but declined. Mr. Ghas. Richardson was chosen. The question of old or new law was taken up and addresses followed. Remarks were made by Mr. Thomas Drynan, Mr. J. S. Gray, Squire Allewelt, Sol. Ague, Jr., and Mr. S. Y. McFarland. Finally a motion prevailed that the election be governed by the old law. Dr. J, Gollord White was chosen chairman of the First Ward meeting. Mr. Richardson was chosen secretary. Nominations for borough officials were made as follows: Borough GommitteeJ—B. F. Gampney, Jr., Walter T. Kerr, Jas. S. Gray, Reason Walker, John S. Downing, Samuel Richmond, S. Krepley. Inspector of Elections—G. F. Barkwill. Judge of Elections—W. H. Parkins. Gouncil—W. G. Murray, Jos. A. Knox. Justice of Peace—A. F. Allewelt. Borough Auditor—A. D. Mellinger, Rice, Richardson and J. Gollord White. School Directors — Two - year term—W. S. Marlatt. Three-year term—Geo.' Kunkle, S, H. Grubbs, E. S. Graig. Gonstable—John Simon, James E. Holland. The primary elections will take place January 26. * The Second Ward meeting was' then held. Mr. Gharles A. Woods was chosen chairman- and Mr. Richardson continued as secretary. The suggestions were as follows: Gouncil—F. Straw, H. S. Jackson. Register Assessor—F. B. Goff. Judge of Election — A. G. Thacher, George 0. Gunningham.. Inspector of Election — F. A. Drynan, John Bigley. Gonstable—D. Gurtis. Borough Gommittee—J. C. Ghaplin, A. G. Drynan, Sol. Ague, Jr., A. Nash, F. G. Paulson, W. K. Brown. (Five to elect.) School Director—The name of Miss Mary E. Bakewell was suggested and was well received, as was also Mr. H. L. H. Blair. The meeting then adjourned, all seeming well satisfied with the results. After Many Years. Mrs. A. Abercrombie, of Hill street, met her brother, Mr. J. Gill, of Dunbar, Pa., for the first time in 34 years, this week. They 'had been separated when children and had no recollections of each other's whereabouts. Good Resolntions. Don't fail to add to your good resolutions the resolve that you will do all in your power to help along the putting up of the Borough building. Vote oh the right side next month and you will be a worthy resident of the finest suburb in the Keystone State. Easy Victory for Sewickley. The Pittsburg Basket Ball Team was defeated S3 to 10, by the Sewickley Independents, at Garage Hall on New Year's Eve. This game was one of the most vigoriously contested of the season. 1 i II > t'l
