}ta*0. *« Pear no man, and do justice to all men." Vol. Ill SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 1906 No. 20 Political Doings. Republican Suggestion Meeting Will Be Held on Monday Evening in Gray's Hall. SEVERAL CAUCUS MEETINGS HELD. Things political inthe borough are -moving in the even tenor of their way, but as politics is a complex proposition it would not be surprising if there would be considerable friction develop before the general election. Numerous caucus meet- ingshave been held during the past week and several slates formed. It is only a matter of conjecture, however, as to whether some of the gentlemen whose names were; used will, consent to stand as candidates. The possibilities are that Mr. Joseph W. Graig will be a candidate for burgess. That Mr. Graig ■would make an efficient burgess goes without saying, and the town would be quite fortunate in having a man of Mr. Graig's standing in this office. ' The councilmanic candidates will probably be Mr, J. G. Ghaplin, in the Second ward, while inthe First ward we we hear the names of Mr. William Sipe and A. H." Diehl. There will be various names presented at the suggestion meeting for school director, to fill vacancies from both wards. Among them are J. N. White, George M. Kunkle, R. P. Glarke, J. B. Reno and J. J. Koch. Mr. S. G. Ritchey will more than likely be named as a candidate for tax collector, and John Johnston for justice of the peace. The above names are not given authentically, but merely noted as heard on the streets, and there is a probibihty of there being others mentioned, especially for council and school director. The suggestion meeting will be held in Gray's hall, on Beaver street, on Monday evening, January 15, at 8 o'clock, and every Republican voter should attend. Smallpox Patient Is Convalescing. Filip Scalaise, the Italian Fruit Dealer Who Was Quarantined December 28, is Out of Danger. ^ NO SPREAD OF DISEASE ANTICIPATED. Filip Scalaise, the fruit dealer, of 60§ Beaver street; who was stricken with smallpox, and his house quarantined on December 28, is reported as convelescing. Wnile this case was an occasion of much alarm at its inception, there is no probability of a spread of the disease. The authorities acted promptly in the • matter, and a watchman was placed at the premises day and night, and other precautions were taken which will result in effectually stamping out the disease. When the quarantine is lifted the building should be razed, however, as it would be a hard proposition to successfully fumigate it, and put it in a good condition from a sanitary standpoint. A Chartered Organization. Sewickley Valley Business Men's Association Getting Down to Business. MUCH WORK FOR COMMITTEES. A good attendance of business men assembled on Tuesday evening at the regular session of the Sewickley Valley Business Men's Association, which was held in their quarters over Walker's pharmacy. Attorney H. L. Hegner sent a communication stating that the court had granted the Association a charter, a copy of which would be sent to Sewickley as soon as it was recorded. This gives the Association a legal standing and the various committees will now proceed to take hold and dispose of the work that has been assigned to them. Benefits that are being realized, and will continue to be so, are spoken of at nearly every meeting, and as the Association is founded on a good broad basis the future is a bright one. There were several reports and communications read, and a general discussion was indulged in on various subjects, bringing out just what was desired—the opinion of the various members. The names on the roster are still increasing in numbers and the Association has, aside from the business men of Sewickley, many of the substantial merchants from the lower end of the Valley. The next meehing will be held on January 23. Edgeworth Council. A Short Session, But Considerable Business Is Transacted. ELECT BOROUGH ENGINEER. Edgeworth Gouncil did not convene until 9 o'clock Monday evening. When President E. P. Lord had called the meeting to order Messrs. Brooks, McCullough and Huston responded to the roll call. After the reading of the minutes the finance committee made its report and also authorized the payment of the current monthly bills. As there will be much work requiring the services of a borough engineer, the street committee recommended the election of such an official and presented the name of Mr. John M. VanGleve, who was elected to fill the position. For the present, Mr. VanGleve will be paid on a per diem basis. There was one other application for this position. Mr. Elliott, of the engineering firm that had charge of survey, was present and displayed drawings showing the proposed grades of the various streets. Gduncil decided to confer with the property owners concerning this very important matter, and accordingly set aside Thursday and Friday evenings as a time to take this matter up, and invited those interested to attend, which they did and Gouncil will take further action at its next meeting. Mr. McGullough asked to have Meadow road, opposite School (Continued on page 12.)
