AUG 6 1904 Jlewlfc a Fear no man, and do justice to all men." Vol. I. SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 1904. No. 47 TABLET UNVEILED, BEAUTIFUL AND IMPRESSIVE SERVICE IN HONOR OF MR. JOHN WAY, JR. V The unveiling of the memorial tablet in honor of John Way, Jr., took place at 9,30 o'clock last Sunday morning, in the Y. M. C. A. building, in the presence of seventy-six members and friends of the class of which Mr. Way was the founder, and for almost half a century the spiritual guide. The service was in charge of Mr, W. K. Brown, the teacher of the class, and were simple and beautiful, and in every way appropriate to the occasion and to the life and character of him whom they were intended to honor. The services began with the singing of a hymn and prayer by Mr, Adam VonHofen. Mr. Brown then made a short address in which he contrasted the lives of Solomon and the Apostle Paul and showed the impelling motive in the character and life work of each. The'speaker then paid a beautiful tribute to the memory of Mr, Way, and showed wherein he had the power to cement the affections of so many young men and to sway their lives. At the close of his remarks Mr, Brown asked for testimonials from members of the class, to which several feelingly responded. Messrs. William Sharpe, Adam VonHofen and F. A. McPherson unveiled the tablet, which is beautifully designed in bronze. The inscription on the tablet is: "In Loving Remembrance of John Way, Jr., Teacher of Young Men's Bible Class, 1850-1901,'By His Class, June, 1904. 'He, Being Daad, Yet Speaketh.' " The memorial tablet is a fitting expression of the love felt for their late leader by the members of the class, A higher and even more enduring memorial is engraven in the hearts and lives of the men who were constrained, by the power and influence he exerted, to lead a better1 life. Interesting Meeting of Council, Council met in regular session on Tuesday Evening with President Miller in the chair. Mr. McFadden was present and rnade a second complaint about an additional assessment on the Washington streetsewer, charged against him. He stated that he had been assessed more than he should have been, and asked to be exonerated- as the treasurer had accepted the amount of the original,, assessment and recipted for it, and an additional amount had since been added afterwards. Gouncil disclaimed jurisdiction in the matter. Messrs. Waas and W. D. Henry inquired about the macadamizing of Division street, from Blackburn avenue to apoint within the borough line. The engineer read the ordinance showing the proposed grade. On motion of R. R. Brown an ordinance for macadamizing said street passed first, and second reading. The engineer was instructed to notify corporations having pipe lines on this street to place them in proper condition, so that the street shall not be torn up for some time to come after macadamizing. Councilman Straw presented an ordinance establishing the grade of Frederick avenue from the east curb line of Walnut street to the east curb line of Ferry street. Councilman Atwell asked permission to have Street Commissioner Doughty go down to Linden avenue, near the Leet towrlship line, and put in a six-inch pipe for temporary use in carrying off the surface water until the grade is established and curbs laid. The request was granted. Mr. Atwell asked for some further information concerning the River avenue grade. There seems to be some misunderstanding about the proposed grade, and the engineer was instructed to have a definite understanding in the matter and report to council. Gomplaint was received from Mrs. G. E. Cornelius that the surface water washed onto her property at Hopkins and Try streets. The engineer had prepared an ordinance establishing a gr*ade on Hopkins street, from Broad street to Try street. On motion of Mr. Atwell the ordinance passed first and second readings. The ordinance vacating 7Young street its entire length passed third reading. (Continued on page 7.) MR. J, D. EDMOND, REGISTRAR AND BUSINESS MANAGER OF THE TWIN CITY BUSINESS AND TECHNICAL INSTITUTE, AMBRIDGE, PA.
