m 11 19 05 " Pear no man, and do justice to all men." Vol. Ill SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1905 No. 9 Political Vagaries. A Complicated Ticket Was Responsible for the Queer Results of Tuesday's Election. Allegheny county will not share in the honors of putting "down and out" the state ring, but the people who favor honest government can rejoice with the state at large at -'.':': the complete manner in which the , "gang" was routed. The returns show a majority of 25,000 for Plummer in Allegheny county, which is attributed in the main to the fact that Plummer headed the Gitizens' ticket and that the straight votes cast by the Gitizens caused the above result. A result like this is unexplainable in the face of the Enterprise bank affair and other rotten methods of the state ring which were recently exposed. It does not mean how- - ever that the voters of Allegheny 'county indorse the Penrose-Dur- ' ham machine, no honest man could do that. . Another of the vagaries noted is the defeat of our neighbor, R. J. Cunningham, for re-election as controller. Mr. Gunningham led the list on the fusion ticket and would in all probability have been fee-elected but for the complicated ■ ticket., Sewickley and the boroughs of the valley gave Mr. Gun- 'hingham a fine indorsement, to which he is justly entitled as he is . a man of sterling honest and an exponent of good government which his past record will show. >■'■ The vote in the borough follows; SEWIGKLEY. * • First Sec. PETITION OF PROMINENT CITIZENS PRESENTED. Regular Meeting. The regular meeting of the Sewickley Valley Business Men's Association will be held on Tuesday evening at eight o'clock in the American Mechanic's hall, Beaver and Broad streets. Business of importance will be transacted. Sewickley Borough Gouncil convened in the Gouncil chamber on Tuesday evening of this week. Those present were Messrs. Frank Straw, Thomas Woods, W. E. Patton, Frank G. Paulson and Solicitor Stoner. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved and the following business transacted: A'committee of interested citizens addressed Gouncil, asking that the first steps be taken toward an agreement with the Pennsylvania Railroad Gompany for a change of conditions between the tracks and the Ghestnut street crossing, where so many accidents occur. A conference will be held between the railroad authorities and Gouncil to discuss the advisability of lowering the tracks, putting in a street subway or some other improvement which would diminish the present dangers. A report of the finance committee showed that for the first eight months of this year, the borough had expended for its maintenance approximately $25,000. The solicitor had investigated all old debts which are due the borough and passed his decision as to their value, all uncollectable back debts then being ordered cancelled from the borough's books, since to carry them longer would be useless. The borough engineer and clerk were instructed to revise the inventory list of the borough property, so that a correct estimate could be had as to the street, fire and engineering departments and other equipment owned by the borough. The street committee's report showed Division street to .be practically completed, and Thorn street not to be completed until spring, when a little more work will be necessary on it. Instructions were given for the placing of seven new fire plugs, and warning the water company to be a little more careful in their work of draining the pipes. The sewer basin at the corner of Beaver and Boundary streets, will be rebuilt, to correct a sanitary defect which now exists there. Two ordinances passed final readings. An ordinance providing a grade for Davis lane, between Nevin avenue and Gochran street, and an ordinance changing the name of Davis lane, between Nevin avenue and Gochran street, to Hill street, to conform to the remainder of the street which is already known as Hill street. After paying the bills and giving the sidewalk committee instructions regarding some improvements they intend making, Gouncil adjourned. Sold His Property Geo. H. Foulks, ex-chief of police, of Leetsdale, has sold his property on the Beaver road to Miss Mary H. Gray. The consideration is said to have been $12,- 000. This is a desirable property as it is a- large building and contains three living apartments and three store rooms. Mr. Foulks is connected with the detective agency of the B. & O. system. Held for Court T. E. Hines, who was recently arrested on the charge of larceny by bailee, preferred by some of the officers of the A. M. E. Zion church, and who was accused of appropriating for his own use $23.SO, Which was alleged to have been given him with which to pay taxes on certain property belonging to the above congregation, was held in the sum of $500, for a court trial. The hearing took place before Squire Johnston.
