DEC 10 190* Tll*(*ltlM fJ^HpAt M<*I*<y15Y ►VtlUll) jEffl&SI JI|££IUv* " Pear no man, and do Justice to all men." dI. II SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1904. No. 13 EETI1 OF THE L i Interesting Session—Several Ordinances Acted Upon—Complaints Made. OROUGH MAPS TO BE REVISED, Gouncil met in regular session on "uesday evening with all the members present except Solicitor >toner. ' The ordinance in regard to Stoys ■un, which was passed some time igo, was found to be invalid because it had not been published. It was therefore rescinded, and a new one, with some amendments, was prepared. The new ordinance places the improvement of the run from the line of the D. W. Ghallis property to the lower line of the borough. The amended ordinance passed first and second readings, and was ordered published. The engineer asked for instructions regarding a mistake made in the calculations of the new sewer on Linden avenue. The mistake amounted to about one hundred feet from the starting point on Grant street. He had prepared a new ordinance rectifying the error. Mr. Straw moved that the former ordinance be rescinded, which was done, and the amended one passed two readings. The matter of the sewer on Lake street was brought up by Engineer Gampbell, and considerable discussion concerning the numerous streets and alleys in the town which had no established grade, or in regard to which no definite information was available. It seems that there are a number of short streets and alleys, of which there is no record on the engineer's maps, and it is not known whether they belong to the borough or are private. Gouncilman Atwell made a suggestion, which was concurred vnipn i ujtyiHum, < ar ■■ ■$ *«»■ JAMES C. McGORMIGK. in, that the solicitor examine the records and find out the status of these streets and alleys and have them placed on the borough maps. It was stated that there are some buildings on Water alley, which crosses Beaver street, that must be removed, as they encroach upon public property. It was also asserted that there were several nuisances existing along the run which should be abated. Some discussion arose as to the powers of council as to matters of this kind, and Burgess Koch read a report from the solicitor in reply to a request of this kind made of him. A petition from several residents of Bank street was read asking for a sewer on that street from the McVey property to a distance of seventy feet west of Walnut street. It was referred to the board of health for action. The repairing of streets was the next item of business. There are several places which need repairing, especially one on Division street and one on Ghestnut street near the railroad, The condition of Grove street was mentioned. Some of the residents on that street want sidewalks, but are not willing to grant enough land to make the street the required width. Gouncil thought if they would not concede something and have the street opened they could build their own sidewalks. It was also thought that a-test case should be made in regard to council's powers in the repairing of streets. . The residents on the lower side of Hopkins street object to the grade established. The burgess moved that a new ordinance be prepared and printed. It was so decided. A communication from the'Board of Health relating to the condition of the run was read, Mr. John (Continued on page 8.) Young People's Union Meeting. The young people's societies of the Sewickley churches will hold a union service in the Methodist Episcopal church to-morrow evening at 6.45 o'clock, Mr, Rollin Holden, the soloist, now with Evangelist G, G. Smith, will conduct the services. 0L0E8T RESIDENT OF SEWICKLEY. Mr. James McCormick Is Ninety Years Old, and Is Still Hale and Hearty. A MAN OP STERLING CHARACTER. The subject of this brief sketch is not only one of our most highly esteemed citizens, but is also the oldest resident of Sewickley. Mr. James G. McGormick was born in Westmoreland county on March 15, 1815, in a small town called Larimer; the house in which he was born being still standing and inhabited. He was the second son in a family of eight children— six boys and two girls. His grandfather, John McGormick, came to this country in the early days of the last century, settling at or near Larimer, Westmoreland county. His father, Andrew McGormick, was engaged there as a farmer for some years afterwards removing to Jefferson county (near St. Mary's) when James was a boy. Mr. McGormick was married fifty- five years ags to Garoline McGolgin, of Rural Valley, Armstrong county. He taught school in Westmoreland and Jefferson counties for a number of years, and came to Pittsburg at about the age of thirty years, making it and Allegheny his home until about twelve years ago, when the family removed to Sewickley. He learned the art of engraving, which he followed until a few years ago. While Mr. McGormick is not a man of immense wealth, he is in ve"ry comfortable circumstances, owning some valuable real estate in Pittsburg and having other investments that are not 'only valuable, but profitable. He is a member of the U. P. (Continued on page 8.)
