I- Pear no man, and do Justice to all men." Vol. IV SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, MAY 25,1907 No. 39 i !, ) Sudden Demise of \ Bright Young Man. -A/ . Death, in most melancholy and sad form, has again visited our valley, in the passing away, on Tuesday evening, of Alexander Montgomery Brooks, the third son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Brooks, of Shields. The harrowing feature of this decease is the fact that death's victim had been happily wedded but a few , weeks ago; that ere the honeymoon was over, the bereaved young wife became a widow. Mr. Brooks' 29th birthday was observed on the Saturday preceding his death. He was a graduate of Yale, clas's of 1900, and was connected with the brokerage firm of Ghilds & Ghilds, Pittsburg. His illness began three weeks before the end, just when the devoted young couple had occupied their new residence on Shields lane. The disorder was quinsy, which developed into blood poisoning. The stricken man bore his sufferings nobly, and loving attention, so freely given, could not avert the fatal end. On Saturday, February 9, the deceased became the husband of Miss Mary Graig ' Ghaplin, daughter of the late Mel- choir B. Ghaplin, of Sewickley. The ceremony was performed in St. Stephen's Episcopal church by the rector, the Rev. R. A.° Benton. Mr. Benton, on Thursday, at 10.30 A. M., conducted the deeply impressive funeral services at the late home of the deceased. The remains were placed in the Ghaplin lot, .Sewickley cemetery. In character and disposition, Mr. Brooks was a young man loved by all who knew him. Glean in heart arid spirit, active and manly in his duties of life, his passing away is an event which gives keenest sorrow to very many. The deceased is survived by his parents, his widow, and his three brothers. These are J. J. Brooks, Jr., F. F. Brooks, and J. T, Brooks. The deep sympathy of very many in the Valley goes to the bereayed relatives of A. M. Brooks, „_*_/ THE LATE ALEXANDER [Photo T.y Diehl MONTGOMERY BROOKS. Memorial Day Exercises. As has been the custom for many years, Memorial Day in Sewickley will be observed in an impressive manner in the afternoon, by various Posts of the. Grand Army of the Republic, assisted by other military bodies. The special train bearing the visiting veterans and their escorts, will arrive at Sewickley at 2.SO, the line to form on Broad street and march up the hill to the cemetery, in the following order. General Alexander Hays Post No. 3, G. A. RM Joseph Evans, commander; Washington Infantry; Abe Patterson Post, No. 88, G. A. R., of Allegheny, William Goweli,'Commander; Davis Gamp, Sons of Veterans; Soldiers of the Spanish War; John I. Nevin Gamp, Sons of Veterans. Several bands will accompany the parade. At the monument the ritual of the Grand Army will be carried out, with Rev. W. F. Brown, of Ganonsburg, as orator of the day. Mrs. J. Sharpe McDonald will have charge of the music, as usual. Following the regular program at the monument the Spanish War men will hold special services for their dead camrades, and Nevin Gamp will conduct similar exercises at the grave of Golonel John I. Nevin. On the return of the parade to the village supper will be served to the visiting veterans in the public school, by the ladies of the Valley, under direction of Mrs. Joseph Grimes. Contributions of provisions for the supper can be sent to Mrs. Grimes at the school house; cut flowers in the morning to the hall over Ritchey's store, and cash to Mr. Albert Moore, treasurer. It is hoped that citizens of the Sewickley Valley will honor the day and memory of the heroic dead, by hanging out their flags and bunting. BASEBALLATY.M.C.A. This afternoon at 3.30 the Y. M. G. A. First Team will make its first appearance of the season. They will meet the strong Penna. Lines Team. Manager Kerr and his bunch will do all in their power to take home a victory, while the Association boys will do all they can to keep the victory at home. The Second Team will play the Leetsdale Second Team at two o'clock, and this will be a fine game. One admission to both games. THE HEROES OP 1907. The Quaker Valley Heroes defeated the Ben Avon Field Glub, third team, in a very interesting game on Saturday by the score of 9 to 5. The feature of the game was a home run by Schmucker. To-day they will play the Gren- ets of Allegheny, and on Decoration Day they will tackle the Freedom A. G., who claimed the 17-19 year old championship of Beaver county last year. CANOE CLUB'S HOUSE BOAT ARRIVES. The Ganoe and Boat Glub have received their houseboat, which is moored at the foot of Ghestnut street, undergoing some minor changes at the hands of the carpenters and painters, in anticipation of the formal opening Saturday, June 1. Invitations will be issued within a few days to a large list of guests, the hours to be from three in the afternoon until eleven in the evening. The afternoon will be in the nature of a reception, but entirly informal. The evening will be occupied with dancing after 8.30, with bridge for the elder guests. Gernert's orchestra will furnish the evening music, with the Sewiokley Troop band during the afternoon, Members can send their canoes or motor boats to the boathouse at any time, where they will be cared for, as the watchman will be in charge day and night.
