'JUL 15 1905 Jto*Ifc •**. " Pear no man, and do justice to all men." Vol. II SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, JULY 15, 1905 No. 44 T Showing the Receipts and Disbursements for the Fourth of July Celebration as Reported by the Committee. The Gommittee having in charge the Fourth of July celebration, desires to express its sincere thanks forthe contributions entrusted to it for this purpose, as well as the words of approval given it for the satisfactory effort. It seems to have been the almost unanimous opinion that the -Fourth of July just past, for various reasons, was more satisfactorily spent than many of 'its predecessors. First, the concentrating of the fireworks in one place, and likewise confining the noise to a certain zone, we believe is a custom that will receive much encouragement. Tbe Gommittee wishes to especially thank the Sewickley Troop Band for its services, which were given without compensation, and which were greatly appreciated by everybody. To the officials of the Y. M. G. A, we extend our thanks in the fullest manner possible for the use of the grounds and other assistance given us. To Messrs. Hegner & Son for fireworks, Mr. Ghas. Becker for storage, and Messrs. Jno. McMil- len's Sons for use of lumber and the hauling of same. To Yee Lee and others for their tender of firecrackers, which were appreciated by all, and their services in putting them off, as well as the public in general we wish to extend our sincere thanks, Your Gommittee appends below the full report, showing all collections and disbursements, and as we have tried to make it absolutely correct, we trust our efforts may not have been futile, After due consideration of a surplus that exists, we have decided to place the same in the First Na tional Bank of Sewickley, for the purpose of the Fourth of July celebration 1906, and subject to the checking of same by present chairman for the above specified purpose. Should the fund not be used for this purpose on or before July 5th, 1906, then the same shall be donated to some institution designated by the Gouncil of the Borough of Sewickley. Should the present Ghairman be absent, by removal or otherwise, at the above time designated, the money shall then be drawn by order of Borough Gouncil for celebration purposes, otherwise in absence of this, for charity as indicated. The surplus was caused by a number of pledges not being received until too late for use in the celebration. Following is the treasurer's statement: $ ct S. Anderson 2 John S. Roberts 2 .1. 0. The Hospital Gommittee, at a regular monthly meeting yesterday at the home of Mr. George E. McGague, Academy avenue, looked over the plans for the new building and suggested changes. The alterations were proposed by Mrs. Stieren, Miss Bittinger, Mr. McCague and Mr. A. G. Robinson. Mr. A. B. Harlow's plans are too expensive, and the architect was asked to modify the plans so as to make same less expensive. Proceeds of the masqudrade ball given at the Edgeworth Glub house in February ($500), were turned over to the treasurer. The next meeting will be called whenever the modified plans are ready to be submitted. ACCOMMODATION "SIDE-SWIPED" Tuesday morning last was a exciting period in the lives of several Sewickley men, for they narrowly escaped death in- a railroad wreck. At 6.SO the accommodation which leaves Leetsdale at 6, was turning the curve which crosses Marion avenue, near Allegheny depot. It was "swiped" by the engine of a Pan Handle freight going west. The combination baggage and smoking car was badly wrecked. Its windows were shattered woodwork torn off and seats tumbled over the aisle. The Sewickleyans injured were in the smoker. Mr. William Millner, of Gentennial avenue, was cut on the .eyebrow, receiving a wound which was stitched at the Allegheng General Hospital. Mr. John Nash, of Green street, had a narrow escape. He was cut by broken glass and covered with upset seats and went to the Allegheny Hospital before coming home. James Garrett, of Logan street, suffered a collapse from the shock of the collision and was slightly cut. Andrew Ebaugh, a conductor, suffered a fracture of two ribs, and was taken to Mercy Hospital. It is stated that a signal to stop was displayed, but was ignored by the engineer of the freight train. Early Morning Blaze. An alarm of fire was sounded on Thursday morning about one o'clock, that called the department to Peebles and Washington streets. The fire was discovered by a railroad man returning from work, and the blaze was confined to the rear part of the building, which is occupied by Mr. E. L, Richardson. It is supposed to have originated from a burning gas jet. The loss by fire was not heavy, but considerable damage was done by water. ,'} i, f ,11 ' .';-i
