Mewlfc tt Pear no man, and do justice to all men." Vol. V SEWICKLEY, PA,, SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 1908 No. 29 Candidate for Assembly. GEORGE E. ALTER, Gandidate for the Legislature from this district, was born at Spring- dale, Pa., May 8, 1868. After securing a thorough education he was admitted to the practice of law in 1895, and by his diligence and sterling honesty has attained high standing both as a lawyer and a man at the Allegheny Gounty bar. The entire 40 years of his life have been spent in this community and have been filled with various activities along many different lines. He has always been a representative man of his community and has served his constituency in different capacities. He was formerly president of the Springdale school board, and is, at the present time, president of Springdale Council. He represents his borough on the Republican Gounty Gommittee and is vice chairman of the Thirteenth District Republican Association. He also represented the Thirteenth district in the Republi can State conventions of 1-906 and 1907. In all these positions of political trust he has acquitted himself with marked credit and ability, and has so thoroughly won the regard and confidence of all classes of men that he has today, the hearty supporCof both factions of the Republican party as well as the indorsement of the Local Option party. Mr. Alter is also a man of keen business sense and insight. He is a director of the Springdale National Bank and is counsel for many business interests. All in all his career a,nd experience have given him a peculiar fitness for the office he seeks. The ability with which he has executed the public trust hitherto reposed in him recommends him to the voters of this district. His record speaks for itself. He asks your support at the Republican primaries April 11. The regular meeting of Edge- worth Gouncil was held on Monday evening, President W. L. Glause was in the chair, and these members were present: James Gollins, burgess; George Gunther, R A. Russell, Dr. R. W. Dickson, William Wardrop, F. F. Brooks and R Way/ Also, Fleming Nevin, secretary; W. D. .N. Rogers, solicitor; and Nathan Buckley, street commissioner. Mr. Glause was unanimously re-elected president, Mr. Gollins occupying the chair at the time. Mr. Glause then resumed the chair, after expressing thanks for the honor conferred. Certificates of the election of inspector and judge of election, on February 18, were read by Glerk Nevin. Recently chosen members of Gouncil then took oath of office before Mr. Buckley, justice of the peace. The election of Gouncil officials for the ensuing year resulted in the choice of Mr. Nevin as secretary, Mr. Buckley as street commissioner and JOSEPHINE MERZ NICHOLSON, Eldest' daughter of Dr. William and Elnora Merz Nicholson, who passed away March 4, at the residence of her parents, 1318 Boyle street, Allegheny, was laid to rest in Sewickley cemetery last Saturday. Little Josephine, who was 9 years of age, was a bright and interesting child, a great comfort to her parents, and her demise is mourned by many friends. She loved to attend her Sunday scho.ol and was absent only on account of sickness. She was also a pupil in the Third Ward public school, and being a very bright child, was ambitious to stand high in her class. A pathetic feature in the closing chapter of this little girl's life was that her examination papers, which were very creditable, did not reach her home until after death had closed the little eyes in eternal sleep. Mr. Rogers as solicitor. The minutes of the preceeding meeting were read and approved. The reports of the committees began with that of the Finance Gommittee, through Mr. Way. There was some discussion as to the best manner of dealing with borough balances. The report was then accepted. Vouchers were ordered issued for the payment of certain bills. The Street Committee's report was received and ac cepted without discussion. The Sewer Committee's report brought up the matter of the eight flush tanks to be built. Among the bidders for this work, that of D. W. Ghallis & Sons was the lowest, but action was deferred until 'the next meeting of Gouncil. The question of a bad leak in a sewer, near Shields station, was referred to the Sewer Gommittee, with power to (Continued on page 4,) mm
