t- Pear no man, and do justice to all men. »» Vol. IV SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, JULY 13, 1907 No. 46 The New Its Opening Will Be One of the Most Notable Days in the History of Sewickley. Saturday, July 20, 1907, will be marked in the history of this valley as that of the most interesting in its-record, the opening of the new hospital of Sewickley. The month which saw the birth of the United States will witness the coming of a noble institute of mercy, where the lives of dear ones will be prolonged. Two years ago Mrs. Harry Oliver donated the 4)4, acres of land upon which the hospital stands. A year ago the building was begun, and now it is ready, in every way, for patients. That year has revealed, in the most interesting manner since the Givil War tried the hearts of women, the devoted interest given by women of this valley to a noble .cause. The hospital was made possible by the donation of a woman, and its building and equipment is very largely due to woman's efforts and the zeal of men in granting substantial aid. The building and its furniture represent a. cost of over $60,000, and on opening day our hospital begins with a debt of IT.OOO on the structure. Of this, the State will pay $2,500, leaving $4,500. The State also contributes $2,500for maintenance for two years. In the near future the contagipus annex will be put up. This will be a medium sized house, of three rooms, located on the hillside, just above the main building, It will be devoted entirely to patients afflicted with con- tageous diseases. Chief among the men who have made the hospital and its maintenance possible is Mr. George E. McGague, whose portrait is herein given, He is president of the Hospital Association and chairman of the executive committee of the board of managers. Sewickley is favored indeed in having Mr. McGague, whose beautiful home is on Academy avenue, as one of her residents. At 3 o'clock next Saturday afternoon-the opening begins. The MR. GEORGE E. McCAGUE. board of managers will have charge of the matter* and ceremonies will be brief and condensed. The hospital will be open for inspection from 2 to 6 p. m., and on Sunday from 2 to. 6 p. m. also. The Rev. Alexander G. Wallace* D. D., will conduct the services, and these will not last over ten or fifteen minutes. President McGague will give a short talk which will interest all, and soon after, a delighted throng will pass through the new building. A matter of special interest may here he mentioned, as revealing the hold which the hospital has upon influential donors. The Manufacturers' Light & Heat company will give natural gas, and electric current for the operation of the laundry, fans, etc., at half the regular rate. The Bell Telephone company will also give half rates. Each of these concerns made the contribution cheerfully and emphatically. The great importance of the electric current in operating the laundry and other mechanism, and REV. A. G. WALLACE, D. D. in supplying light as well as power* renders the generosity of the L, & H. company specially welcome and effective. Two wards of the hospital are furnished by Mrs. H. Oliver with five beds each. A band of women, the Emergency Society, composed of young girls and matrons, furnished a receiving room with stretchers, cots, etc. Mrs. L. Halsey Williams furnished a reception room with heirloom table, chairs, desk, etc., a (Continued on Page 12.) iver Carnival. The Motor Boat, Canoe Races and Aquatic Parade This Afternoon and Evening., An elaborate program has been arranged for the regatta this afternoon and evening, under the auspices of the Ganoe and Boat Glub. In the motor boat race those expected to participate are Glen T. Braden, J. W. Gollins, Harry and Howard Sipe, Dr. Stevenson, Lawrence Ghristman and B. W. Houston. There will also be single and double canoe races and double oared skiff races. The prize for the double canoe race will be two paddles and forthe single canoe and skiff event a club penant. The races start at 3.SO in the afternoon. In the evening at ?.30 there will be an illuminated fleet parade and this will be followed by an informal dance at the boat house. Dr. DeWitt B. Nettleton and Mr. Gilbert A. Hays, were to act as the officials but Mr. Hays was called to New York on urgent business and will not be able to participate much to his deep regret as he has taken a deep interest in the affairs of this new organization. Off to Camp. The boys of the local Young Men's Christian Association leave for camp on Lake Erie, on Wednesday morning. A special car will be attached to the Erie train which arrives at Sewickley, at 7.53, All boys should be at the station by 7.30 o'clock so the canip boxes can be checked. Each boy should take a lunch. Don't forget the time. < .( .,A. K*rsc==c "™.«sTY*"3Y k_--_j__j"_~ 11 J
