fl \/'l Su ^* J^'J?fifcsAi..j:„ NOV 4 1905 JKewti*. " Pear no man, and do justice to all men." Vol.111 SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1905 No. 8 Contest For Controilerstiip. Some Pertinent Reasons Why Present Incumbent is Entitled to Another Term. INDORSEMENT OP CIVIC LEAGUE. Until the election of Mr. Cunningham to office three years, ago, the Sewickley Valley had not been given any prominence in county politics. The holding of one of the most prominent offices in the county by our fellow-townsman should be a matter of local pride. Mr. Gunningham has, during the past three years, filled the office with credit to himself, his fellow- townsmen, and the citizens of the county at large. Nothing more commendatory could be said of his ability, and the manner in which he has conducted the affairs of his office than the editorial indorsement given him by the Pittsburg "Gazette," which is as follows: ''In the strife and bitterness which have attended all political campaigns in this county during the last four years, it is refreshing to refer to one official whose conduct in office entitles him to the respect and approbation of all good citizens of whatever party. We refer to Mr. Robert J. Cunningham, the County Controller. Mr. Cunningham was elected three years ago on the Gitizens' ticket, and still holds allegiance to that party; but in the administration of his office he has been fair, discreet and courteous in the highest degree, and has earned the commendation of all with whom he has come in contact. It would be a graceful act, and one which would meet with is ROBERT J. GUNNINGHAM. Candidate for Re-election as County Controller; Election Tuesday, November 7, 1905. proper approval, for the Republican county convention to tender a unanimous renomination to this faithful, public servant. We venture to tender this advice to the delegates, and sincerely hope they will find it the part of wisdom to follow it." Mr. Gunningham's record aside from holding office should commend him favorably to all voters of the valley. He has been a resident here for more than 34 years, and his standing in the community in every respect has been of the highest degree. It would be a courteous act for every voter in our community, of whatever political faith, to cast a ballot on November 7 in favor of Mr, Gunningham's re-election to the office. ClViC LEAGUE INDORSEMENT. Mr, Gunningham is well known throughout the county and is personally very popular. He is an honest, intelligent man of independent ideas and thorouh ability. He was elected controller three years ago on the Gitizens'-Democratic ticket and his administration has been clean, progressive, economical and businesslike. Mr. Gunningham has inaugurated a number of reforms, which have largely increased the revenues of the county. He took the position that all fees for the collection of state taxes belonged to the county rather than to the official, and by enforcing the law in this respect he procured the return of a large percentage of the fees collected during the past 20 years by former county officers, He has also largely increased county revenues from the offices of justices of the peace and aldermen. Mr. Gunningham successful demanded that all bids for county contracts be opened publicly and had them tabulated in his office. The county has since been getting many or its contracts at noticeably lower prices. He is ^now testing the right of the register of wills to retain the fees for the collection of the collateral inheritance tax, a contention which, if decided in favor of the county, will add a large sum to the county revenue. Mr. Gunningham's character, record and experience have demonstrated his eminent fitness for the office for which he is a candidate for re-election. JOTTINGS. Will not some local ward heeler "put Sheriff Dickson wise" to the fact that the elections in the First Ward, Sewickley, are not held in the store room of G. Kaufman on. Thorn street, but in the "public safety building" on Ghestnut street. Three men disabled in the football "fuss" on Saturday afternoon wasn't a bad record, for the time they were at it. Attorney General Garson, in his~ address at the Republican meeting in .Turner Hall, made a forcible argument for men to withhold their judgment on the Enterprise bank scandal. That's right. "Garse," it might make the gang feel bad to show them up before election. If the Penrose ring carries the election, wonder if they will have the legislature pass a bill to erect a monument to the Enterprise bank looters? If they do, it would be well to inscribe the names of the widows and orphans whofell victims to the looters. They are entitled to some consideration. The weather man did the community a favor on Tuesday evening when he checked the depredations of the Halloweeners with a downpour of rain. ii
