Owing to the absence abroad of President E. P. Lord, Councilman Russell presided at the regular session of Council, held on Monday evening, and Messrs.' Wardrop, Herz and Brooks responded to the roll call. There were also present Clerk Nevin, Solicitor Rogers, Engineer Van Cleve)"Street Commissioner Buckley, " and Burgess ' Collins, who came in later in the evening". After the reading 'o'f the minutes by the clerk of the previous meeting, which were adopted as read, Mr. Brooks, f the Finance Committee, presented ;he. report of that body and vouchers Were- ordered drawn for the' payment of the current bills. The Street Committee and the Committee on Sewers reported- progress on certain matters that they have on hand, and ,which will be disposed of finally at the next meeting. The Committee on Light and Police reported conperning uniforms for the police force, but nothing definite was done in the matter. Mr. Roherty, of the C. D. & P. Telegraph company, was present and the matter of the police anc^fire alarm sys- teyn that is to be installed was talked . This very much desired, system w|ll be installed in the very near future, an approximate cost of $400.' Bids have been -advertised for the construction of sewers, and it is expected that this important work will be Well tinder: way in the near future. This is a good sized job and-will run weKl into the thousands before it is . completed. ■ The Committee on Borough Property gave the Borough Engineer authority to purchase a drawing board after which Council adjourned. . Nicols Hurt in an Elevator Car. - S Is Caught in the Door as it Moved , Upward and leg is Fractured , As a result of his leg being caught by B^door in One of the elevators in tht People's Bank building, Fourth avenue, shortly before noon on, Thursday, Par- shall D. Nicols, senior: member of the real estate firm of P, D. Nichols & Co., is now lying in the Allegheny General Hospital suffering with a broken leg. Mr. Nicols attempted to step into the elevator just as the operator was closing the door, and his left leg was caught between the door and one side of the shaft. The force of the elevator starting upward wrenched Mr. Nicols left leg in such a manner as to break the bone above the knee.' Director W]Rf. White, of the Sewickley Troop Band, had .his "men out on Monday and. Thursday eVs?nings to advertise "Shenandoah," thfe'' military play, to be presented for the benefit' of che Soldiers' Monument Fund, and the new band made a fine showing. The ooys are expecting a Set of new instruments from the Conn Manufacturing Company, which are expected to arrive in a few days. They dispensed their usual fine selections, and the seranades they tendered The Herald were much appreciated. It is the intention of this popular musical organization to give open air concerts during the summer and there is some talk of erecting a platform or pagoda on the borough property for this purpose, This should be done, either by the borough or by public subscription, as these concerts would be greatly enjoyed. The band respectfully^ request the citizens of Sewickley. to suggest a new name for it. There being no troop in Sewickley we have decided to change our name, but cannot decide Upon one which we consider suitable. Help us out and give us your opinion as to & suitable name. Y t The rush for seats for "Shenandoah" at Walker's drug store last Thursday resembled a riot, sor great was the demand, and it took about two* hours to satisfy the long line of applicants. There are a number of good seats yet unsold, but it looks as if every one would be sold by Thursday evening, the date of the first performance. The selection shows preference about equal for both nights, some wanting to attend the opening, others the second night. Owing to the length of the performance the curtain will rise promptly at 8 o'clock, so as to allow many guests from the city time to catch the 11:28 train.
