Friday night the weather was su- • l^rb and all faces were turned tow- r apd Association Parkand the streets ■',1 Wading, thereto presented an animated throng of people, autos, traps ,. .and other ..vehicles. - There were ^ rnany out-of-town folks present. C 41i!The booths took in the entire were artistically deco- M park and ' T-rated. .t><*>. I Flags, bunting, Japanese lanterns, together with the handsome articles displayed, presented a beautiful sight. The park was lighted with many colored electric lights in the evening, and the gaily dressed throng presented a lively scene. Within the circle of booths, under a large umbrella, was the Sewickley Troop band, which gave concerts* * Trt the gymnasium of the Y. M. C, A. building, which had been fitted up as a Japanese theater, con tinuous vaudeville was given during the afternoons and parfbf the evenings. Pony carts and ponies, together with automobiles and goat carts, were busy hauling people over the Valley, the pony cart trips being through the handsome estate of Mrs. Henry W. Oliver. The ponies were loaned by the little Misses Bower, Sacket, Walker, Arrott, Smith. Gole and Masters Ghaplin, Walker and Graig. Automobiles by Mrs. F. M. Hutchinson, Joseph .McGlurg, W. McC. Grafton, Glen T. Braden, J. D. McGord and J. W. Porter. Goat carts by Masters Gillette and McGracken. One of the most unique features is the '"Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch," in charge of Miss Anna Nevin. There are vegetables in the garden, which is surrounded by an old board fence and slopes away from a little hut with starched curtains and thatched roof. Each of the. vegetables, which are for sale, has within it some prize. The rain water barrel at the corner of the house is filled with toys, and from the old well one may pump up all sorts of articles. ' The grape arbor bore mysterious presents .^and the yard was blooming with old-fashioned zenias, marigolds, hollyhocks and sunflowers. Those in charge, who were gowned in old style, included Mrs. Wiggs, the children, Mr.' Wiggs and all the well-known characters in the book. The place attracted continuous crowds. The large ice cream booth was decorated in green and white. There were the fortune tellers, the orange tree and the doll booth. At this latter booth is a life-sized doll, which will be given to the person drawing the correct name from a collection of slips which contain 150 names suitable to be applied to the doll. There are old-fashioned doils, one presented by Mrs. Frank McKinnie, being more than 100 years old. The tables were filled with handsome dolls for sale, as well as complete sets of toilet articles for dolls. The doll house was a handsome imitation of white tile. In the novelty booth were articles of all descriptions. . The Japanese booth was unusually interesting. Tea was served and music discoursed—all in real Japanese style. Minister Taka- hira, at Washington, sent four exquisite cloisonne vases of wrought silver on enamel which were centers of attraction. Various articles were- sold by guesses, including a pony, a dog, a handsome jardiniere, and other smaller articles. Supper was served on the large porch of the Y. M. G. A. building, which was beautifully decorated. .In the vaudeville performance were "Punch and Judy," "Topsy Turvy," "Looking Backward," "Little Stunts by Little People," banjo selections, opera comique, comic songs and music by the Katzenjammer band. The various booths were presided over by the following chairmen who were ably assisted by the aids: Mrs, Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch- Miss Anne W. Nevin Chairman, Mrs. R. P. Irwin, Jr., "Mrs. Wiggs." Novelty Booth—Mrs. S. G, Scott. Lemonade—Miss Margaret Adair, Japanese—Mrs. Wm, Arrott. Ice Cream- -Mrs. Thomas Liggett. Household Goods •*—Mrs. George A. Gormly* Gypsy Camp—Miss Mary Cree Porter. Fruit and Flower—Mrs, William P. Snyder. * (Continued on Page 12.) <-»•> v-#i** W T-\H Council Meeting. The regular meeting of Council was held on Tuesday evening. There were present Mr. Frank Straw, Mr. F. G. Paulson, Mr. J. C. Ghaplin, Mr, Thomas Woods, Mr. W. E, Patton, and the clerk, Mr. S. McFarland. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. On motion, certain accounts were ordered paid, after being investigated by Solicitors Stoner and Hersh. The Glerk was instructed to draw a warrant on the bank for all available cash, except a reserve of $3,- 000, to pay outstanding indebtedness. The ordinance for the providing for the raising of $50,000, to meet borough expenses, was brought up and passed first and second reading. . . .... The matter ofa garbage furnace was taken up. The objections of residents of Glen Osborne to a site in that part of the Valley, was discussed, as well as the protest to hauling of the garbage through the streets. This unwholesome proceeding was denounced by several members. Sites for the furnace were suggested, such as the vicinity o£ thjuWater Works, on an elevated tract, and some lots on River avenue, on the White property, and above high water mark of the river. A motion was passed continuing the committee appointed several months ago to secure a furnace, site. This committee consists of R G, Paulson, W. E, Patton, J. P. Walker, G. G. Stucke, D. S, Wolcott and J. D. Miller. Mr. Walker and Mr. Stucke are members of the Board of Health. This important committee was requested -to meet on Saturday evening next. On motion warrants were ordered issued for the payment of several bills submitted and app proved. (Continued on page 12,) ' 4 rife
