Ukeklg it Pear no man, and do justice to all men. »> Vol. IV SEWICKLEY, PA., SATURDAY, JUNE 1,1907 No. 40 A Day of Memories •Clear Sunshine on 39th Decoration Day. Immense Procession, Impressive Ceremonies. Born in May, 1868, thirty-nine yearsago, Decoration Day of 1907, was a decided success. The weather man predicted showers, but the sky was cloudless and the air delightful. The largest procession which ever climbed the venerable hill, passed from the station to the cemetery, and all were deeply impressed by the ceremonies amid the graves of heroes of nearly half a century ago. A more beautiful sight has never been witnessed in this Valley than that afforded on Thursday afternoon. Between the hours of two and three o'clock the station became the center of a throng of hundreds, old and young, gray-haired men in uniforms of blue, and frolicsome children in white were in marked contrast. It was a day of memories, and of deeds which were tributes to those whom memory recalled. At three o'clock the special train arrived bearing Grand Army Posts, Spanish War Veterans, Battery B, 14th Regiment, John I. Nevin and Davis Star Gamps, of the Sons of Veterans, and two fine military bands. Gheers greeted their arrival, and the parade formed in line, 'In the lead was a troop of school girls in snowy white, and with these marched the Washington Infantry Band of 20 pieces, with Thomas Hardy as leader. The Sons of Veterans followed, the Nevin Gamp SS containing seventy men, Gapt. W. S. Moffatt being in chartfe. The Hays Post S, G. A. R„ made a fine showing and Porter Phipps was IN HONOR OF SEWIGKLEY'S HEROES. acting leader, owing to the unavoidable absence of Gomrnander Wm. Few. A .fine drum corps, Mr. E. Hefley, leader, enlivened tbe parade. An active group of 16 boys marched next, and represented Sewickley's 14th Regiment Boys' Brigade. Of this the captain is F. Albrecht, and the lieutenant is Norman Abercrombie. The lads were uniformed in khaki and deported themselves in a most soldierly manner. Marching alone, dressed in deep red and carrying a fine flag was an active and dainty damsel of 12. This was the daughter of Post 88, G. A, R., Miss Jean Margaret Hoover, daughter of John Hoover of Burgess street, Allegheny. She has marched with the Post at Denver, Boston and other places, and is a pet and favorite. Continued on page 10. Mishap at Pern Hollow. On Decoration day afternoon Mr. D, F. Henry and two women members of his family were enjoying an automobile ride in Mr. Henry's car. The latter had an ugly fit while passing along "Fern Hollow." This is a picturesque place, three miles back of Sewickley, on the road leading down to Glenfield. Fortunately, the mishap was not serious, except for the car, which deserved punishment. No one was hurt, but the machine will need the attention of garage surgeons. ClaSs Night Exercises. The Glass Night exercises of the graduating class of '07 will be held in the auditorium on Friday, June 7. Following is the program: "Greeting"—Ruth Walker. "History"—Elizabeth Lambie. On Wednesday evening, May 29, Mr. W. G. Duncan, of Osborn, was married to Miss Ethelyn G. Wood, of Pittsburg. They will occupy the residence of Mr. G. Hunter Miller, 625 Broad street, on their return to Sewickley. The happy man is the active and capable real estate dealer of Sewickley, and the bride is a most popular young woman of the "Iron Gity." The young couple are now enjoying their honeymoon trip. The Houseboat Opening. The Ganoe and Boat Glub of .Sewickley will open its fine new houseboat on next Saturday afternoon and evening, June 8. There will be dancing from 8.SO to 11. The boat is at the foot of Ghestnut street, and the event will be a notable one.. The Ohio river holds no handsomer place in its course than the Sewickley Valley, and the study of its waters can not be made in a better way than using the boats and canoes of the club. Expert boatmen are in charge of this club, and when the government dams above and below Ghestnut street are finished, which will not be very long, every Sewickleyan should be at home upon the surface of "La Belle Riviere." Business Men Will Entertain. Mr. David G. Krouse will give an illustrated lecture before the business men's association at its hall next Thursuay evening, June 6, on a "Trip to Japan." Mr. Krouse has traveled extensively through Korea and Japan, and has made his own slides, being an expert in the work. This makes him thoroughly familiar with his subjects, and gives the assurance that it will be an evening of pleasure and profit. The evening will be spent in an informal way, taking the nature df a smoker. Each member will be allowed to invite a friend. 'i1' I t' a';«. .i ij I 1 Y^"j~-?*-*W*WW--_-i WaseSKj^T^^
