The Sewickley Valley's Home-News -Weekly ’OL. 52 NO. 40 SEWICKLEY, PENNSYLVANIA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 0, 1055 Price Ten Cents County And State Re-Studying Schools Sewickley^Century Club Celebrated 10th Anniversary A covered dish dinner was the ighliglit of tire observance of their :nth anniversary by the Sewickley ientury Club on Tuesday night, Sep-¡mber 28th, when the ladies met in le St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church arish House. Special guests at the event were barter members who were invited to elp with the celebration. The tables were decorated with hstically arranged floral pieces and ivors were handkerchiefs in the form f colonial bouquets. Two displays were featured at the meeting by the welfare committee and the finance committee. Books for children which were purchased with $125 donation for the Sewickley Library were shown and a display with items for sale was also featured. Articles which were on sale included Christmas cards, candles, and candy. Special speaker for the evening’s entertainment was Miss Sylvia C. Steinle of the Manufacturers Light and Heat Company, who spoke on food nutrition and the part that minerals and vitamins play in the health of the human-body. In the photo are left to right Mrs. E. V. Barnes, present president; Mrs. W. II. Beiglilea, Mrs. I-I. Leach, Mrs. S. Mahood, Mrs. Bert Jody, Mrs. F. L. Wilson, first president of the club; Mrs. D. II. Bickey, Mrs. W. W. Will-son, Mrs S. K. Anderson and Miss Gertrude Smith, all past presidents of the club. ilenfield Asking Bids For Construction Of lew Wall And Repairs To Kilbuck Road Council Approves Light Company Plans For New Street Lighting On Boulevard Glenfield Council, at a busy meeting Monday night, received te plans for the proposed new retaining wall at the curve on ilbuek Road and authorized asking bids for the construction; pproved the Duquesne Light Company’s plans for new street gnts on the Boulevard and heard that the traffic lights might e installed by the middle of October; heard a report that the instruction of the water line on West Beaver should be started )0n| voted to purchase a lot for right-of-way for the line; granted building permit to the school for the construction of new inside initary facilities; discussed with the engineers the improvement \ Dawson Avenue by Dinardo, Inc., in exchange for the con-nued use of the batch plant; passed resolutions requesting the fate Highway^ Department to replace the former sidewalk on »cst Beaver Street and also' to replace the former access to Hill oacl and asked the Railroad to fix the lights in the tunnel and to !Pair the crib wall beside East Beaver Street. Fred Omar, an engineer with M. ' Frye and Associates, presented ilns and specifications for the re-acement of the retaining wall on 10 aurve On Kilbuck Street for which 1° borough lias received the promise i county aid in the amount of $11,-... Flans were drawn for either a 11 . Concrete retaining wall or' a Wcrete crib wall with the solid wall »mated to cost about $6,000 more l'm tl0 cr'b wall. Even though state matching funds' are being used, the state is more interested in whether the project accomplishes its purpose than in the details of construction. The plans show that 200 feet' of Kilbuck street will have to be rebuilt to get the necessary superelevation on the curve and then return to normal crown. The plans also contemplate widening the pavement at the curve by three feet. Beider Chaplain Charles W. Beider, of the USAF, will be the guest speaker at tho Young Woman's Civic Club meeting on Thursday, October 18, 1955. lie was born in Pennsylvania at Stoelton and also graduated from school there. Chaplain Beider- enlisted in tiro U, S. Marine Corps and served his country from 1942-55, spending '18 months of this time in the South Pacific. Ho attended Lebanon Valley and Gettysburg colleges and graduated (Continued on Page 19) Counîy School Board Grants Request For A Re-Sumy Of Facts About Local Schools County And State Staffs To Report Back On Jointure Plans By Monday, October 24th The Sewickley School Board this week received a reply from the County School Board to its request that another survey be made of the school situation in the Valley to determine the best method of solving tire local school problems. The County School Board stated that it had decided to have the County Office staff and the staff of the School Business Division of the Department of Public Instruction make a re-study of the problems involved and report back as quickly as possible. It is hoped that the County Board will have a comprehensive report of the problems involved not later than October 24th. Meanwhile, without waiting for the solution of the entire problem, the Glenfield School Board has let contracts amounting to about $15,000 for the addition of inside sanitary facilities to its building. The following letter was received Monday by the Sewickley School Auxiliary Plans Hospital Party CABD PARTY, FASHION SHOW AND TEA PLANNED The Woman’s Auxiliary of the Sewickley Valley Hospital will hold a Fashion Show piresented by. Joseph Horne’s, card party and tea, at the Edgeworth Club, Thursday, November 10, at 2 o’clock. The proceeds will be for the Nurses’ Home Building Fund. Miss Marguerite Ducker, Hospital Administrator, will preside at the' Tea, assisted by Mrs. Ruth Khouri, Director of Nursing, and members of the Auxiliary Board. Officers of the Auxiliary are: President, Mrs. Robert Otis Jones; Vice President, Mrs. Albert L. Fairley, Jr.; Secretary, Mrs. Edgar S. Henry, and Treasurer, Mi's. Wm, II Fowler. My dear,Mr.'Mathias: The County Board of School Directors has asked me to outline the developments following the petition of the school districts of Edgew'orth Borough, Lectsdale Borough, Sewlck-Icy Heights Township, Sewickley Towmship, and Leet Towmship to form a joint board. The County Board heard the members of the proposed Quaker Valley Joint Board at the August meeting. The Board invited members of the Sewickley Borough, Osborne Borough, Haysville Borough, Glenfield Borough, and Aleppo Towmship School Boards to attend tire September meeting of the County Board to present their point of view. Following the September meeting, the County Board requested that members of the County Office staff and of the School Business Division of the Department of Public Instruction make a re-study of the problems involved and to report to the County Board as quickly as possible, It is hoped that the members of the County Board will have a comprehensive report of the iiroblcms involved in the Lower Ohio Valley not later than October 24.
