Sewickley Valley’s Home News Weekly mm I Voi. 46 No. 40 SEWICKLEY, PENNSYVANIA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1949 Price Ten Cents Leetsdale To Crown Autumn Queen Lions Club Benefit The annual contest for Autumn Queen will be held by the Leetsdale Lions Club to raise funds for its charitable work on October 29th, in the Leetsdale High School. The queen will be crowned at a coronation dance. Samuel Solito is chairman of the annual event, assisted by Harry Mason and James G. Hood. ^ Sewickley Valley' Hospital Benefit The Women’s Auxiliary of the Hospital Association will' hold its annual Bridge Benefit and Tea on Wednesday, October 19th, at 2:00 o’clock, in the Edgeworth Club. _ The officers of the Auxiliary are President, Mrs. William Walter; First Vice President, Mrs. Chester Van Kleeck; Second Vice President, Mrs. Jack Lyon; Treasurer, Mrs. Edgar Henry;' Secretary, Mrs. Glenn Peiifer. Mrs. Julian Kennedy, Jr., and her aides mil serve tea at the close of the afternoon. Mrs. Charles Emmert, Jr., will be in charge of the tables; Miss Helen Smith, of tickets; the Misses Mary and Katherine Wolcott, of prizes; and Mrs. Donald Atwell, of publicity. Membership Campaign Gets Under Way Early in the fall each year the1 thoughts and footsteps of young people, and older ones, too, turn toward the ‘Y’. The year’s activities get into full swing as basketball, badminton, volleyball, and ‘body building’ teams meet in the gym. Every age group from nine to thirty starts its club program, while pool, ping' pong, caroms, handcraft, educational and recreational classes enroll their followers. You can learn a heap of interesting physical and mental skills at the V, but even more than that—you can share a fellowship and grow in character worthy of the name Christian. Men and women, boys and girls—your only age qualification is that you must have reached your ninth birthday! Swimming, either as recreation'or as a skill to be learned, is found six: days a week at the Association. There is no better place to practice than at the ‘Y’ pool. When you take out a membership 'in the ‘Y’ — the cost varies according to age and the ability of different ages to pay — you have no more charges (except the billiard fee) for any activity.’ It is all open to your choice, and even educational classes, like dressmaking, are offered to you at a tuition considerably reduced. The Annual Membership Enrollment begins today, October 6th, with a dinner at 6:15 in the building for all campaign workers (captains and team members). Mr. George Bedison, Superintendent of Leetsdale Schools, will speak, and C. Kirk Stroll will preside as the Director of the drive. Captains who will lead the twelve teams are: Mrs. Martha Milli- gan, Harry Staniland, Mrs. R. K. Swan, Erytli Rea, Renee Devine, Dolores Wojt-kowski, Tom Nelson, Janet Clarke, Bob Smith, Elva Jean Eshenaur, Linda Shep-ler, and Vance Rea. The drive closes on Tuesday, October ISth. When one of the sixty-odd campaign workers calls on you about enrolling as a member, give him or her an attentive and friendly ear. Your joining will mean fun, friendship and fitness for the year ahead. Community Calendar I Thursday, October 6 10 a. m. to 4 p. m.
