The The Sewickley Valley’s Home News Weekly Voi. 42 No. 23 SEWICKLEY, PA., THURSDAY, JUNE 7, 1945 Price Five Cents John Frederic Byers, Jr. Meritorious achievement during 17 months of continuous offensive operations has won the Bronze Star Medal for lit. Oonidr, John F. Byers, Jr., HJSiNiBj of Sewiekley, Pa., who received ' the decoration from, ¡Rear 'Admiral Alfred E. Montgomery, USflST, Commander Fleet Air, West Coast, at the IT. J3. (Naval Air Station, San Diego, California. 'Now attached to Bear Admiral Montgomery’s staff, the Pennsylvania officer was cited for ibhe performance of outstanding 'services as Flag Lieutenant and'Aide to a .carrier .division and. task, group commander operating against the enemy in "the Pacific -from August, T943, until January, 1915. “During that-period,” his citation explained, “he ait all times carried out his multiple duties'and'assumed a 'burden of heavy responsibility with outstanding calmness and ' efficiency. His assistance in planning and execution contributed .materially to the successful operations of the task group.”' The son of Mr. and’Mrs.’ J. F! Byers, Sr., of Sewickley, Lieutenant Commander and his wife, Mrs.. Alison Grace Byers, noiw make their home at 760-B Avenue, Coronado, .California. He is a graduate of Yale University. Among the actions lie participated in while .serving with the carrier force were those at Marcus, Wake, Babaul, Gilberts, Marshalls, Truk, Hollandia, Palau, Marianas, the Battle of Philippine Sea and Bonin Islands. Dedicate Honor Boll Residents of Sewickley Heights Township gathered about their new Honor Boll on Big Sewickley Creek ¡Road Sunday afternoon for the dedication ceremonies. The roll; built of red brick and glass-covered, lists the names Of 76 men and women from the toiwn-ship in the armed services. II. J. Apel was master Of ceremonies' 'and ' introduced the speakers and guests. Music was furnished by St. Paul’s Orphanage Band and Miss Marian Sickoler of Edgeworth , was the soloist. Reverend C. E. Stahlman of* the Ambndgc Zion Lutheran Church gavo the invocation and benediction and Commander Kris-tex of the Ambridgo American Legion had charge of the flag raising, firing squad and the playing of “Taps” by Scout James Stanley, Boy Scouts of America. Coisftgcs word presented to the five Gold Star mothers by the Township authorities and Frank L. Palmer of Pittsburgh _ presented the honor roll with appropriate remarks. J. A, Stono of 521 Hill Street, arrived Monday on a thirty day furlough front England, whore lie is with the 8th Air Force since 1943. William H. Hoffman, Jr. Craig Field, Selma, Alabama': The right to'wear a pair, of coveted “Silver Wings” and fly one of Uncle Sam’s swift and deadly fighter planes against our Axis enemies has been won by William Harry Hoffman, Jr., son of Mr. and iMrs. William ¡EL Hoffman of Camp Meeting Boad, Sewickley, who w-as appointed a flight officer this week in outdoor graduation ceremonies at the Poean Grove at Craig Field, Selma, Alabama. The awarding of the wings and appointment eaane after the new flying officer had completed his advanced flight training at the' Fighter School in Selma. During itlie many months of training he had to undergo before he received his "wings and certificate, he was given all types of instruction. He was toughened mentally and physically and learned ;to drill, just as any soldier. He was also given every phase of combat instruction, including fighter formation, ground and aerial gunnery, •night flying and high altitude missions which equip'him to. become a vital member of tlie United States’ still rapidly increasing air arm, which daily is carrying the war across waters to the very heart of our enemies’ strongholds. Assignment to Iris next station followed the exercises. With Seventh Anny Mrs. Frances La Marea, 6.16 Broad Street, lias received word that her son, Private William P. La Marca, is now with an infantry unit with the Seventh Army in Germany. Pvt. La Marca lias participated in two campaigns, one in Munich and one in Austria, and has received two stars on his campaign ribbon: 'He also lias been awarded the good conduct ribbon and the expert infantryman modal. Ills company captured General Yon Bundstodt, Von Kesselring and Herman G'oering and he was in the salito division as Commando Kelly. New living in a large hotel in Germany, he reports the food gtìod, all the candy and cigarettes they want for free. As the weather is quito , warm they go swimming twice daily, Pilot Home From Europe Captain Walter B. (‘Bud’) Bower, son of Mrs." Hilda 'Bower,, 607 Kevin Avenue, a B-17 Fortress pitot, is ionic on leave until Juno 17ith, when ho will report to Miami, Florida, for reassignment, His wife, the former Alice Hamilton of Edgeworth, will accompany him south.
